You never cease to amaze me. I did notice when they removed your fic from fanfiction.net, and I was pissed! They removed my all-time fave story a few years back and I will never forgive them. I guess you were just too hot to handle ; P. Anywho, I'm thrilled that you made the modifications and have continued with the story. Needless to say, I will be reading the updates from here, but I still receive e-mail notification from ff.net, which is great. Can't wait for the next installment of Cap'n Jack goodness!

50 chapters??? I pass up MOST stories that run long, most of them seem to be prattlesome Mary Sues with thin plots and absurdly non-canonical characterizations and tiresome dialogue and sex scenes more suited to a cheap porn movie than to a coupling where I want to see passion of epic proportions and maybe even True Love. Most, but not all. If it rates a lot of stars, I'll at least skim the first chapter. Some of them are worth wading through as many as a dozen chapters if there's enough wit sprinkled in and the Mary Sue isn't so sweet as to induce a diabetic coma. Your story isn't one of those. Not at all. Your story is delightful, suspenseful, comical, lustful, and the loving is sweetened with just the right amount of honey to make it delicious rather than icky. Hehehe...did I have you in suspense there? I'm a writer, too.
I opened the first chapter of The Haunting Place long ago, prepared to skim. I didn't skim. I savored every well-turned phrase, giggled at the humor (LOVE the word-play w/ Maren & her transparent trollop!), grinned at the courtship dance where Jack pursued Maren until she caught him, gasped at the horror (most horrific scene - Jack morphing into a corpse while making out with Maren), and...I could go on, but let's just say I LOVE this story. I wait months to check your progress so I can joyfully binge on several chapters, then curse like a pirate when I come to the end of them.
Maren isn't, strictly speaking, a Mary Sue. Yes, the reader easily slips into her role and I'm sure the author does as well...but that's what a good heroine is for. A bonafide Mary Sue would be annoyingly perfect, would instantly entrance every male she encounters, and would make everyone act horribly out of character. Maren is someone who could conceivably be a character in a future PotC movie. She's 3-dimensional, as is her friend the dead doxie, and if I knew them we'd be friends. Which means I enjoy spending time with them so much that 50 chapters sounds just dandy.
Woman, you should be writing bodice rippers. GOOD bodice rippers. I used to read bodice ripping romances a lot, until I became a more discriminating reader and found that very few authors did that "Historical Romance, Rogueish Hero, demure maiden who will readily become a one-man-wanton" with a style and wit that satisfied my fantasy needs without writing so badly that I was distracted from the story and/or disliked the main characters for being arrogant, petulant control freaks who've mistaken pathological jealousy for True Love. You might seriously consider taking some of the work you've done in this story and crafting a pirate story with all original characters. Sure, people would read it and say, "He's like Jack Sparrow." But Jack Sparrow is an archetype, like Robin Hood, and if you change enough stuff it won't be plagiarism. I think your work is quite sellable.
I also want to say that in all the years I've been reading AFF, this is the FIRST time I've felt moved enough to actually write a review. I've thought about it before (incl. previous chapters of this story) but never got around to it. I'm a tough critic and a world-class procrastinator, and I say this so you'll know this review means I REALLY like your work. Do more!!!

I'm so glad I found this story again. I can't believe that "other" site deleted it. They allow some of the most ridiculous crap to be posted, and they delete excellent works of fiction because they're ,shall we say, a little racy. It's just unbelievably stupid... If you don't like smut, don't fucking read it. I don't understand what's so hard about that. Anyway, this story is excellent. I love your Jack, he's so true to character. And Maren and Kristy are fabulous. I loved this chapter especially because, like Jack, I enjoy outsmarting people who think they are outsmarting me. Nothing like hustling a hustler. Glad to see you're posting again. Can't wait to see what happens next.

I do have an interesting story to go with yours...As soon as I started reading this chapter and Maren came in, I knew what was going on! I knew only because I'd used the exact same cheating methods with my boyfriend when he first started playing Black Jack! Oh those were some good times! Anywho, please do check your email I'll be sending you a wonderful picture of myself and Justin (my boyfriend) from prom. Trust me you'll LOVE this! Update soon my dear!
