The story you're thinking of may possibly be The Wreck of the Hesperus, by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. A lot of people have read it in school. I think there's also a music hall (c.1880-1930 period) song based on a version of Wadsworth's words. Since I stumbled across the poem while looking up something else the other night, I thought I'd drop you a note.

After I read "Fate Intervenes", I checked to see what else that you had written. I was leery of this fic because it was a OC. I've had bad readinng experiences with those. But, I was so impressed with "Fate Intervenes" that I read this one. It was pretty good for an OC. The premise was unique, and I like how you made use of Gibbs' superstitious mind (chuckle). I can't blame your ghost girl for selecting Jack to keep her company either. And he was sweet to pay his respects to her grave and encourage her to find her father; so, she won't continue to be lonely. Like another reviewer stated, this is similar to Longfellow's poem. I drew the same comparison until I read your author's note. Anyway, this was nice work.

I don't think it's where the story came from, but this reminds me very strongly of a poem by William Wadsworth Longsfellow, called 'the Wreck of the Hesperus'. It's about a bout that was trying to make it's way to Norman's Woe (in greenland) and got caught in a storm. The captain's daughter had been on board and he'd lashed her to the mast to keep her from being swept overboard. None of the rest of the crew were ever found, but the boat was found with the girl still lashed to the mast.

You can find the poem here if it can be seen in reviews here...

Creepy.. Chrie Vie Vincent was the name of a girl who went to middle school with me... she bomb-threatened the school and got kicked out.
