Prologue

Once upon a time, in the land of the Faye, there lived a terrible monarch. He was the King of the Goblins, and he was called Jareth. Perhaps he had once been human... Perhaps he was just another type of Faye. No one could be sure... But the goblins all pledged their undying allegiance to him, for they were terrified of him... and also because he gave them a home.
Jareth built a Labyrinth -- a huge maze full of pitfalls and dangers untold -- to protect the goblins. In the center, he built Goblin City and a huge, stone castle. He filled the Labyrinth with terrible creatures and places, and he used it to amuse himself and his subjects. He would bring a human to the Labyrinth, lured by something he had stolen, or by a promise, and give them 13 hours to unriddle the horrible maze. No one ever made it through...
But then, one day, Jareth saw a beautiful, young girl... Her name was Sarah Froud, and her beauty was uncompared. Jareth took to disguising himself as an owl so he could follow her and watch her... and he gave her a special power.
Sarah was made to look after her baby half-brother every weekend when her father and step-mother left for a night on the town, and Sarah resented this. So, the Goblin King gave her the power to call upon his services and rid herself of the baby by saying one, simple phrase... "I wish the goblins would come and take you away right now". However, Sarah did not know this power, and one night, she angrily said it, unaware of what would happen.
Her brother, Toby, was taken by the Goblin King.
Sarah pleaded with Jareth to return Toby to her, and Jareth finally agreed to give her a chance to win Toby back... For, you see, this had been his plan all along... To get Sarah into the Labyrinth where he could profess his love for her and perhaps keep her with him forever.
He gave her 13 hours to complete the Labyrinth. If she succeeded, he would return Toby to her. If she failed, he would transform Toby into a goblin and keep him there for all eternity as one of his subjects.
But Sarah made unexpected progress through the Labyrinth... She did something no one else had done before in the Labyrinth -- she made friends. The goblin, Hoggle, the beast, Ludo, and the fox, Sir Didymus all fought along her side... Hoggle, using his knowledge of the Labyrinth. Ludo, his ability to call the stones and rocks to come to his aide. Sir Didymus, his fearlessness and skill with a rapier. Finally, with but a half hour left, they reached the castle.
Sarah ran to find Jareth and Toby, finding herself in the Escher room -- a mystical place where stairs and entrances ran upside down, rightside up, backwards and fowards, right and left -- and face-to-face with Jareth at last.
"Give me the child." Sarah whispered.
"Sarah, I have been generous until now. But I can be cruel." Jareth replied coldly.
"Generous?!" Sarah scoffed. "What have you done that is generous?"
"Everything!" Jareth shouted. "Everything that you wanted I have done. You asked that the child be taken. I took him. You cowered before me... and I was frightening. I have reordered time. I have turned the world upside down. And I have done it all for you! I am exhausted from living up to your expectations. Isn't that generous?"
And Sarah drew herself up and spoke clearly to him, "Through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered, I have fought my way here to the castle beyond Goblin city to take back the child you have stolen, for my will is as strong as yours, and my kingdom is great. You have no power over me."
And those words were the ruin of the Goblin king. Sarah was allowed to return home with her little brother, and they lived happily ever after.

But 16 years later, the Goblin King was thirsty for revenge... And so our story begins.

Author's note: Yeah, I did it all over-dramatic and fairy tale-ish. Hope you liked. Oh, if you've gotten this far, and you really didn't like it, please leave a review with reasons why. It'll help me improve as a writer! It's nice to get compliments on my writing, but it's helpful to get constructive criticism!
