Andromache and Hector

Eetion stood at the foot of the steps that led upto his throne. His daughter stood in front of him a look of horror and disbelief on her face. 'I won't' she cried, 'I will not marry a stranger.' Eetion looked at her placidly expecting the anger. 'When you marry he will not be a stranger.' He took hold of her shoulders and spoke gently to her, 'My daughter you are my lifes heart and I would not have you do this if Hector was not a good man. It is a good match for both our kingdoms.' Andromache sighed, 'Yes my father.' Eetion smiled and lifted her head, 'I will make a pact with you my child, if after your first meetings you are still set against this I will stop the wedding.' Andromache looked at him with hope, 'Really,' 'Really.' Andromache nodded, 'I accept your pact.' Her father nodded, 'He arrives tomorrow.' Andromache looked at him, 'I will try and like him.'

The rest of the day seemed to pass in a blur as her fathers advisors each seemed to admonish her in turn and remind her repeatedly how good this match was for her home. At last she managed to escape. The advisors were right of course, it was a good match for her home but Andromache had wanted to marry for love. She sat on the end of her bed as she untangled her hair thinking about all the possibilities tomorrow would bring.

Sila woke her early and she bathed and dressed. After she had eaten her father came to see her, 'Remember daughter it is a good match. He is a good man and handsome too I think.' Andromache nodded her head. It was time.

Andromache waited in the gardens, nervously biting at her bottom lip. Hector was coming to visit today, their first meeting. She had heard many things about the Prince of Troy and knew the marriage was not only agreeable to her father but perhaps also needed for an alliance. Her mind worked through all the information she had managed to gather about Hector hoping that if it were half true then he would be a good man, the gods willing. This was important and she needed to make a good impression on the man she was to marry. Her father had taught her many things about politics and she had been taught by others who came to visit their home. She could carry out this role of wife and consort well. She knew this, yet still she stood wracked by nerves.

Andromache shuffled nervously, it was a good match, she reassured herself. Her fathers’ reports on him could not be so wrong. The gods could not be that cruel to her, could they? She reproached herself, ‘It will be fine,’ she mumbled to herself, ‘My Lady,’ a small voice said, ‘Sorry Sila,’ Andromache said remembering she was not alone, ‘I was just.. It doesn’t matter.’ Sila nodded her head, ‘As my Lady wishes.’ ‘It is a good match,’ she said out loud, ‘It is. It will bring peace and fortune to both kingdoms,’ she was trying to sound as if she were reassuring her companion rather than herself. ‘As my lady says.’ ‘My Lady does say,’ she answered with an edge to her voice she hadn’t meant. Before she could apologise the bushes shook and rustled and a tall man stepped out alongside her father, ‘Hector, I present my daughter Andromache,’ as she looked at him she felt her heart leap inside her chest. ‘My lord Hector,’ she said formally.

Andromache sat on the balcony looking out over the land she called home. Her first meeting with Hector had gone well. He was certainly handsome and seemed kind enough. He had walked with her and told her of his home and his people. Andromache was still unsure but she had a few days to decide.

The days seemed to pass so quickly, she saw Hector everyday and each day she agreed with herself he was handsome and kind but could she love him, perhaps. He had a wonderful sense of humour that made her laugh almost unwillingly and his eyes sparkled when he looked at her. He made her weak at the knees but she was determined to say no when her father asked her about the match.

The day came and Andromache stood at the bottom of the steps once more, 'Well child,' her father said expectantly and before she could stop herself, 'I will marry him.' Her father looked at her with a mixture of relief and pleasure. He would see his daughter marry to a good man. 'So be it. I will make the arrangements.' Andromache nodded her head and took her leave from him.

She walked in the garden and plucked a rose from its bush. She had agreed to marry Hector. She felt a queasy sensation in her stomach and had to fight the bile from rising. Why had she done it. And then he was in front of her smiling. He reached out a hand and placed it on her arm, 'I am pleased you agreed. Even if you had not our treaty would have been safe.' Andromache nodded her head unable to speak. 'The wedding had been arranged for two days hence in the cool of the evening.' He looked at her for a moment, 'You are the most beautiful woman I have seen.' Andromache blushed, 'Prince Hector you flatter me.' He smiled, 'No I speak the trut He He let go of her arm and looked at her for a moment, 'I bid you goodday. I will see you in the evening two days from now.' Andromache nodded her head, 'You will. Goodday.' She nodded her head to him and walked away. Two days seemed to be such a short time away.

She slept fitfully and was awake before the sun rose, so many things to do. Already she could see hustle and bustle in the grounds as they prepared for the feast that would happen after the wedding. Sila entered her room, 'My Lady you awaken early.' Andromache looked at the girl who had been her aid for many years now, 'Sila I would have you come with me to Troy.' Sila looked at her mistress, 'I would follow you where ever you go.' Andromache smiled, 'Thank you.' She looked back outside, 'Now we must start to prepare.' Sila nodded her head.

The time seemed to pass so quickly, she was busy with people coming to congratulate her and preparing for the ceremony and she thought she would never have a moments peace. Her father watched her proud of her choice. He felt a certain fear inside, this marriage would mean she would go away, far away.

Andromache stood in her room, she was being dressed, her last few moments as Andromache, Princess of Thebes, now she would be a Princess of Troy, wife of its heir. She walked down to the temple followed by Sila and looked inside, Hector was waiting. Her heart lurched he looked so handsome and above him she could see the statue of Aphrodite looking over them. She looked up at the statute, 'Aphrodite bless our union,' she asked in a small voice before repeating the prayer to each god in turn.

Then she found herself next to him her hand bound to his by cord. Her father was asking them to pledge themselves to each other, she took a deep breath before she did. And then it was over. She turned to look at him, 'I will love you for all my lifes breath. There will be no one else.' Andromache could barely breath now and she could do nothing other than nod. They turned to her people and her father stood proudly behind them, 'Greet Andromache and Hector Prince and Princess of Troy.' The temple burst into applause and she smiled. She was Andromache of Troy now.
