This takes after the events of The Mummy Returns. Kaira (Kai-rah) has been transported through time from Ancient Egypt when the Romans attacked to a slave ship in 1938. The reason that she does not immediately associate that she is in another time is because in this part of the world, little changes with the passage of centuries. Please be nice and write me reviews, this is my second foray into story writing and my first in this section. I hope you enjoy.

The slave boat unloaded at the docks of Rome, carrying many souls that were lost in their own misery at being forced into bondage. However, one waited for the opportunity to strike. Veiled by her ebony hair, Kaira’s eyes darted about, looking for the perfect moment to escape. She knew that she must get away before being sold, because after the money had changed hands, escaping from a household would be near impossible. No, the time to act was nigh or never at all.

Kaira held her head up high, despite the chains around her wrists, neck and ankles. An Egyptian, much less an Egyptian priestess, does not bow to filthy Romans. When they had attacked the Temple of Bastet, Kaira had fought to protect the Amulet of Bast, a powerful talisman belonging to her deity. The battle was soon lost though, as the High Priest Baka had aided the Roman swine in the battle, the traitorous son of a crocodile. She assumed it was he that had clubbed her on the head when she fought to keep the Amulet safe. Kaira wiped memories of Baka’s perfidy from her mind, as she must be focused on the goings on about her if she intended to break free.

The slavers led her and a few others to the auction block. She could remember the slavers words upon the ship as they had looked over her.

“Ahmed, this one will fetch a very fine price. Good bone structure, no scars, firm body. A very fine price indeed! How fortunate that we found her, unconscious near the Temple! Who knew that when were looking for treasure, we would find one such as this. Praise be to Allah!”

The stinking mass of flesh leered at her. Kaira lashed out with her foot, wiping the smirk off the oaf’s face as well as loosening a few teeth. The man fell to the floor with the power of the kick, but another man (“Ahmed”) rushed over and clasped her ankles in iron. He wiggled a finger in her face.

“If I didn’t need your body to be unbruised for the auction block, I would beat you here and now! Instead you will go without food for the remainder of the trip.”

They had not bothered her again until it had been time to disembark to ship. Now Kaira could see the auctioneer’s block. It was a wooden structure that stood a few feet off the ground; Kaira counted about eight feet or so. Watching the poor creature that was being sold at the moment, Kaira noted how the proceedings went as far as the sale. Her lips lifted into a semblance of a smile as she saw that the chains were the first to go, and then her eyes hardened as she saw that clothing was stripped off next, in order to drive the men wilder and the prices higher. She made up her mind that as soon as the shackles were off, she would put her plan into action.

Kaira shuffled along the line, she kept her head bowed so as not to attract undue attention but allowed her eyes to circle the plaza. There were six guards, fat lazy ones. They would be no trouble. The square was filled with men, some low born, some sitting upon litters lifting a finger now and again. They were probably picking concubines. Nearing the end of the line, a dark figure caught her eye. He was not haggling prices like the others but moving slowly through the morass at the back of the crowd.

Finally, it was her turn to take her place on the block. The auctioneer started listing off her “qualities” to the potential buyers as a burly guard began to unlock her chains. Kaira held still until her removed the last of the heavy links, then sprang into action. She jabbed her elbow sharply into his nose, then landed a swift kick into his knees, sending him to the ground. As the guard slumped, Kaira grabbed his short sword and turned quickly to block the descending blade of another guard. Shoving his blade, she managed to unbalance him enough to shove the heel of her palm under his chin, the distinct crack telling her that she had done considerable damage. Kaira pushed the guard down the wooden steps, pushing back the swell of other guards rushing to disarm her. She jumped off the stage, her knees bent in preparation for impact. When she hit the ground, she ran towards the alleys to try and lose herself in the city.

A dark hand grabbed her arm and lifted her onto a horse as black as Egyptian soil after the Nile floods. Kaira turned to see if friend of foe had picked her up and was surprised to see the dark figure that had been trying to cut through the crowd earlier. Closer up she could see tattoos that were high up on his cheekbones. She did not understand the language that the beautiful symbols were, but she traced the line of hieroglyphics that was written on his brow. They translated into “Guardian of Egypt”. Relief swept through Kaira as she realized that she was in the arms of a Medjai warrior.
