Shane watched as the officers escorted the teenager up the ramp and made their way onto the deck. The kid almost looked like a boy and if it weren’t for the braids sticking out from under the skull cap Shane wouldn’t have thought any different.
“Her name is Kerona Paige Collins. She is 16 and is a graduate level.”
“High School?”
“No Shane. College. She has surpassed so many, a lot of people say she is a genius.”
“You have been going through my computer files again.” He looked at Claire and smiled letting her know he was only teasing.
“No. Now I have my own since I joined you on this rescue mission. It is a good idea you mention to Julie to join us. It will help you relate a lot more to Kerona.”
“I thought it would make us a lot less suspicious but that works too.” He felt so much more complete these days now that he had Claire and the kids to be his family.
“Lt. Wolf. I am Agent Lockwood. This is Miss Collins. Miss Collins it has been my pleasure now if you will excuse me.” The agent signed to Kp the whole time she spoke. Shane exhaled loudly and turned toward Claire.
“No one said anything about her being deaf.”
“I’m not.” They were first words from Kerona since she arrived. “I just sign because not everyone knows what I am saying and I didn’t feel like popping my headphones off every time the bird wanted to say something to me.” She didn’t look at Shane or Claire, just watched Agent Lockwood make her way off the ship. She turned to face Shane and he jumped back. The cut on her lip was prominent and the black eye could be seen from a mile away. “Can I go to my cabin and refresh before we debrief?” She sounded exhausted. Shane almost voiced his disagreement when Claire spoke up.
“Sure. Let me show you where it is. Shane could you find the rest of the gang so Kerona can meet them when she finishes?” Shane nodded and walked off. Kp shook her head.
“Is he always that stiff?”
“No. He is a really great guy once you get to know him.”
“Right.” She drew out the word and walked slowly to her Cabin just wanting to hide away for a long time until she could figure out how she was going to get the bastards who fucked up her life.

Seth walked quietly behind everyone keeping to himself a bit so he could observe his surroundings. When his mother mentioned a cruise he was happy. She also said that Shane and Claire would be there too. It was after that he became suspicious. Lulu mentioned she overheard mom talking about someone named Kp.
“Seth, you with us?” He looked up at the mention of his name and smiled at Zoe to let her know he was fine. So much had changed since the introduction of Shane into their family. It was normal for him to be over at the house or just around the corner. Even he had changed physically; he was so much taller now and more built. All that training with Shane had done him good.
“Hey Guys.” Shane’s Greeting caused them to look in his direction and smile. He had been busy with the school and they hadn’t seen him much but now they got time to relax and visit with him. “Kerona is freshening up and we are going to meet her and Claire for dinner.” So Kp was a girl. That was interesting.
“Sorry Seth.” His sister said with a laugh. Seth rolled his eyes but not without a smile. His family got along better these days but not without the occasional squabble.
“Is there time to put our stuff away before we go to dinner?” Julie asked Shane hoping to get a chance to speak with the kids about Kp. Shane told her that she had been attacked the day before and she didn’t want anyone to be startled by her appearance.

Hurrying to the dining hall she wasted no time in trying to get a table.
“Where’s the fire?” Kp asked, a bit curious to why Claire was running.
“Oh no fire. Just want to get a big enough table for all of us to sit together.”
“Three people ain’t that many people.”
“Oh Lockwood didn’t tell you did she. We have a family coming to join us so it isn’t so suspicious looking. You will love this family.”
“Great. More people to ask why my face is so busted.” Kp rolled her eyes as she sat down. Claire waved Shane over as he entered the room with the rest of the family. Kp could see why Claire liked him. He was very attentive to detail and Kp noticed the way he smiled at Claire when he thought no one was looking. She watched him closely and the family behind him. She watched as what she guessed was the oldest daughter leading a younger girl and a young boy to the table. Behind the girl was an older woman carrying a toddler who had wide eyes and watched everything around him. Beside the woman . . .Kp couldn’t believe her eyes. She had seen boys before, even some that looked just like him but this one was different. His mother said something and he laughed. Kp strained to hear what it sounded like but found that she was happy just to see him laugh. He stood about 6’1”, with shaggy blonde hair and blue eyes.
“Gorgeous. Just gorgeous.” Suddenly she felt so self conscious of what she was wearing and couldn’t get her clothes straight enough. She wished she hadn’t rushed through her makeup and had been able to properly do her eyeliner. All she could do was put some foundation on and hope for the best.
Seth looked up at the girl Shane was introducing and found himself wondering how she got that fat lip and black eye. He found himself smiling in the fact that she wore headphones all the time just like him. His sister stepped up and held her hand out to Kp until Kp shook it and smiled.
“Hi, My name is Zoe. This is Lulu and the quiet one over there is Seth, say hi Seth.”
“Hey.” He smiled and Kp could have melted right there in her seat.'Oh God. Now I am acting like a stupid schoolgirl with a crush on the high school hottie! Could I be any more pathetic?'
