Chapter 1. Awakening.

The merchant vessel was moving silently through deep space. The complete blackness outside was only accompanied by distant stars that seemed to be too far away ever to be reached. The ship wasn't new, actually it was more on the verge of retirement, built in the 70: s, in the 28: th century as it was. But the trip was cheap, affordable to the various civilians who at this very moment put their trust in its technology to work yet another journey.

Inside the cryosection everything was quiet, as it should be. The passengers had been in coldsleep for weeks now and it remained several months before they would eventually reach their destination. Behind the glass windows of each cryotube you could see the silhouette of human forms, lit up only by the dim reddish lead light from the corridor outside.

You could count to at least 50 or 60 tubes, all with paying passengers. There were also the four crew tubes and, on top of that, one that had been specially installed before take off, delaying departure by 12 whole hours which had caused some disturbance among the waiting passengers. A rumor had spread that they were going to be accompanied by an infamous escaped murderer named Richard B. Riddick, as well as two police officers escorting him back to prison. That caused some concern, but they were all reassured that he was already asleep and would be knocked out through the whole journey.

No worries.

She woke with a gasp and flipped her eyes open. Something was wrong, very wrong. She shouldn’t be awake, not now; it was too dark, too silent. Shouldn't the crew wake up before the passengers? Shouldn't there be some kinds of arrangements when they woke, some staff helping her to, you know, open the lid, assisting her to get up out of the tube? She didn't really know, earthbound as she had always been. She wasn't really experienced in space traveling. A month ago she never could have imagined herself in this position, ever.

There were no sounds, she could sense no movements and all she could see was the dim lit surroundings outside with numerous tubes like hers. Her vision was limited by the fog accumulated on the inside of the glass door, caused by her accelerated breathing.

She frowned. “I should get back to sleep” she told herself. She closed her eyes and waited for sleep to come. After a few minutes she realized that she was cold… and hungry, and “sigh” needed to pee. “No wonder” she muttered. She tried to ignore her discomfort but with little success. This was not supposed to happen!

What had gone wrong?

Well. Ok. She'd been told the ship was well equipped in case of any kind of situation emerging. She just had to find a toilet and a little something to eat. You weren’t supposed to have a full stomach when in coldsleep but she knew she’d get sick if she didn’t eat something. Drowsy she lifted her hands and searched for some kind of handle to pull, for a moment she felt claustrophobic and her heartbeats was audible in the small space. There! She sighed with relief as she pulled the emergency lever on her left side and could hear the gases around her being evacuated.

With a hiss the magnetic lock disengaged and the door flipped open. She unstrapped and pushed herself up to a sitting position. Carefully stretching her legs before using them she tried to make sure that she wouldn’t just fall to the floor. She could feel that she wasn’t very strong; there sure was a point in having people taking care of you when you woke.

In the cockpit Riddick reset the last of the earlier coordinates while stretching his limbs one at a time. He hadn’t been asleep but he had been in restraints and contained in that small space for weeks and was a little stiff, to say the least! Well, he had been sure to pay them back for their services! He grimaced, his jaws had been held in an uncomfortable position by that fucking bit they always forced on him, afraid as they were that his reputation as a cannibal would prove to be true. He always took it as a compliment that people were so afraid of him; it gave him the upper hand in every encounter.

He had been busy since he’d released himself from the restraints and opened the cryochamber only about 15 minutes ago. He’d had to work fast eliminating the effects of the alarm that set off upon opening the lock to his chamber. Everything had progressed according to plan however and in just a minute he'd been home free and could relax a little, take a shower and grab something to eat before moving on to the next step.

Suddenly he was alarmed by a discrete blinking light on the control panel. He frowned and quickly got to his feet. A cryolock disengaged? He’d already disposed of the two cops, what was it now? A crewmember? Silent as a cat he moved towards the cryos.
