Prologue: Mallepa 2045

(Note: Sho's POV)

Sometimes I wake in the middle of the night, my arms reaching out to the space of the bed you once occupied. I am met with a cold and empty void. No sign of you ever being within my reach.

Yet, in the dark and elusive night, my mind tricks me into thinking that I can see your sleeping form. The innocent sound of your breathing, I can see your beautiful face too. Your eyelashes caressing your cheek as you lay in a deep sleep. You are so close that I can almost reach across and pull you to me, yet, as I do, you dissolve into nothingness and my arms meet with the cold void once more.

Has it really been a whole eighteen years since I last laid eyes on you? I wonder where you are now.

I couldn’t stay, I couldn’t bare to let people see me the way I was. And we couldn’t keep living the lie, it was getting us nowhere. When you watched me dying, when you witnessed me breathe my last breath, I knew that I had to leave you. I was ready to leave it all behind.

And now I am back here, in the place where we spent so many years alone together. The place was empty, the desolate echoing of my footsteps being the only sound that welcomed me home.

‘Tadaima’ I called out, half-expecting you to pop your head around the corner and shrug the way you always used to when I returned.

Nothing.

The sound reverberates around the room before fading away to a mere memory.

So I slept, in our bed. The ghost of you wrapping itself around my body, calling out pleasures I had forgotten were possible. Yet, none of it is real anymore. I can still remember when it was, how could I forget? The way you curled up to my back and lightly kissed my hair. The way I roused from my sleep and turned around to kiss you.

‘Tasukete Kure Kei’

Chapter One
Japan 2026:

Slinking through the shadows, a tall man made his way through the empty street. He was out hunting to feed his insatiable hunger.

Spying a potential meal, he crept ever-so-silently, dodging the dimly lit streetlamps as he went.

The woman, obviously a prostitute was idly standing beneath one of the streetlamps, smoking a cigarette. She had no idea she was going to fall prey to the man, no idea that he was coming up behind her, judging the distance between them with frightening precision.

The tall man appeared under the same light as she, and, without a moment’s hesitation he clamped a strong hand over her mouth and pulled her back into the alley.

She looked into his eyes, and noticed one thing before he plunged his teeth into her willowy neck.

His eyes were a startling light blue.

Sho slumped to the ground, pulling his victim down with him. He took one last drink of her sweet crimson life force before pushing her roughly away from him.

Wiping his mouth he sighed, his hunger had been satisfied for now at least. He put his hand into his white coat and retrieved a packet of Marlboro red cigarettes. Pulling one out, he found his lighter and lit the thing. Inhaling deeply, Sho smiled.

It had only been a year since he’d left Mallepa. Only been a year since he was re-born as a cursed being. He was still angry, angry at the man behind his newly found predicament. Yet, as the day’s flew by and the night’s too, his anger began to lessen, only to be replaced by a slight lingering feeling of longing.

He hadn’t realized his feelings until he left Mallepa, he hadn’t realized that he was in love with the very man he had been forced to hate.

Closing his eyes and exhaling, Sho remembered the man’s face. He remembered how he’d always been beside Sho, ever since he was a young boy. The way this man had taught him how to fight, taught him how to live in the violent world he’d been born into. It was true; he owed the man a lot. Sho was forever telling himself that.

The only person Sho hated now was himself. He couldn’t come to terms with the monster he’d become. He was close to giving up, close to throwing his half life away to the morning sunrise, but something held him back.

He was lonely; he had no one to keep him company. He was completely convinced that he was the only vampire in the country.

Sho had contemplated choosing a handsome human and turning them, so that they too could share in his misery, and grow to understand him. Understand him just as he had. However, he hadn’t come across a suitable candidate as of yet, and was enduring the solitude his type of life placed upon him.

Standing up, Sho chucked the half finished cigarette onto the floor beside the woman. He turned to leave the alley way, but was stopped when he heard a familiar sound.

‘Who’s there?’ He called out as he turned. The entrance to the alley was empty, no one was around, he could sense that much. Yet, he’d heard a sound, a voice. It sounded achingly familiar, someone had called him, someone who knew him best.

‘Kei…..?’

You Kurosaki walked along the street, his guitar slung carelessly over his shoulder. He hummed a tune as he made his way home.

The night was falling around him, he’d been practising with his band and was heading back to his house to get some much required sleep.

He was a handsome man, just having turned 27, his hair was brown with blonde bits and braided, reaching past his shoulders. His well-defined facial structure gave him a compassionate and kindly look. Reaching almost 6 foot 1 inch You Kurosaki was a sweet natured, easy going man.

He reached a corner and checked for cars, which seemed a little pointless as the street was empty at this time of night. He crossed the road, still humming away to himself.

From an alleyway across the road another person stood, their form hidden from You’s view. The man watched with interest as You walked on, humming happily to himself.

You reached his home and entered through the gate, oblivious to the person that had followed him. He unlocked the door and entered, placing his guitar onto the floor, resting against the wall. He removed his coat and slumped into his favourite chair before lighting a cigarette.

Sho had watched the young man as he walked into his line of vision. He’d followed the sound, thinking it was Kei, when it was actually this handsome human humming to himself.

Kei had hummed to himself. When he didn’t think anyone else could hear, he’d began humming to himself. Sho had always loved to listen.

He was reminded painfully of his former companion in this happy looking human. There was little or no physical resemblance, bar them both being japanese, yet, this human seemed to be made of the same soul as Kei.

Intrigued, Sho had carefully followed the man, watching him swing his hips from side to side as he walked, his hand tapping his thigh providing a beat for his humming.

Kei had played the guitar too. This human was carrying a guitar case, another similarity that made Sho quite uneasy.

Even the man’s scent was akin to Kei’s; as the vampire carefully followed him he could smell the bittersweet scent, a scent that reminded him of happier times. He was in a daze. Sho felt like he wouldn’t be able to stop following this person, even if he had the desire too.

Sho was crouched in a bush, his eyes trained on the window of the house. As if he’d commanded it, the human male came back into Sho’s line of view. He watched as the man sat down on a chair and lit up.

Who was this man? Why did he remind Sho so harshly of what he had left behind?

Sho spent the night watching him, the way he moved, the way he went about in his own world, oblivious to his watcher.

It was as if Sho was mesmerized. This man reminded him of Kei; it was as if Kei was letting him know that no matter where Sho roamed, a little piece of him would be near. Itsumo.

‘God, I’m thinking like Kei’s dead.’ Sho commented to himself as he began to walk back to his home. He knew he couldn’t replace Kei with this human. It was probably just his mind playing tricks on him; he missed Kei that much that anyone reminded him of his love.

Sho’s home was a derelict building in the outer city. It wasn’t much, but he’d settled quite nicely. Ever since he’d arrived in Japan, hungry, afraid and angry, this place had provided him solace. No one bugged him, no one even knew of the buildings occupant.

Opening the door slowly, allowing the creak to fill the air, Sho went inside. He took off his long white jacket with care, brushing off the soil that had made its way onto it when he sat in the bushes. He hung it up and walked into the makeshift bedroom.

Dawn was fast approaching so Sho got himself ready for sleep. As he closed his eyes and gave over to rest, he felt a weight lift off of his heart.

Somehow, finding this human had done that to him. For the first time in a year he felt glad he’d came to Japan.

‘I swear, there was someone watching me last night. I’m not being over the top, there was somebody out there, I could feel it.’ The tall man sat on the edge of the stage and ran a hand through his blonde hair.

‘Are you sure you weren’t letting your imagination get the better of you?’ A smaller man said as he too sat on the edge of the stage beside the other. He had an electric guitar resting on his lap.

‘No, really Chacha, I just know there was some one out there.’ The man looked out across the many empty seats in the clubhouse. He knew he’d seen someone, knew he’d been being watched. Yet, it hadn’t unnerved him as much as it should have.

‘Listen You-kun, just concentrate on our debut. That’s all you need to be worrying about at the moment.’ Chacha said, placing a hand on the other’s shoulder. ‘Look; I’ll come back with you tonight and check it out.’

‘No, it’s fine. I’m just being stupid.’ You said, turning to look at his friend. ‘Thank you anyway, it means a lot.’

The band practise had been taking up a large amount of You’s time, there was a lot of pressure on the band to do well. The debut they’d been waiting for was finally around the corner. You packed up his things carefully, almost taking his time on purpose, to delay going home.

‘Are you sure you’ll be alright?’ A voice said behind You, he turned around to be faced with Chacha, a look of worry written all over the effeminate looking man’s face.

You had been friends with Yukihiro ‘Chachamaru’ Fujimura since University. He could confidently say that he was his best friend, closest friend. Chacha was a out-of-the-closet gay, he had been for many years, even when You had first met him. He was forever telling You to give up and admit that he too was ‘swinging for the other side’.

‘Yes, I’m good, just a little nervous about the gig. It’s coming so soon.’ You said smiling shyly. True enough, the gig was only a week away. Tension was running high for the entire band and crew. The record company they’d been signed to was one of the biggest in Japan, and they expected results.

‘Arigato everyone!’ You said, bowing deeply several times to different members of the crew and band. ‘Ja mata ashita!’

Sho sat up in his bed, sweat pouring down his face. He’d dreamt of that day again. He felt the bullet penetrate him, felt his life slowly draining out of his body, his blood running all over the rubble he was lay upon.

Then he saw Kei, Kei shooting and then, he was in Kei’s arms, the feeling of security had washed over him and then he’d lost consciousness.

Sho had awoken with a cry, at the sharp pain at his neck. Kei had bitten him, rather than letting him die. He then drank from Kei, completing the process.

He didn’t even have any control over any of the matter, he didn’t have any choice. Kei had taken that away from him the second he’d sunk his fangs into Sho’s neck.

Now Sho could see it from Kei’s point of view. Kei had been acting in sheer desperation. He couldn’t face losing Sho, couldn’t face the fact that his only love would soon be forever lost to him. Sho could no longer hate him for that.

This realization had come with another, the fact that Sho did return the feelings. Kei was Sho’s only love. He had very little anger left for the petite vampire now.

‘Kei, I miss you.’ Sho said quietly. Looking around the room he slowly rose to his feet. Picking up the shirt from the back of his only chair, he silently buttoned it up before running a hand through his long hair. Securing it into a ponytail, he picked up his coat from the hanger and walked out the room.

His feet were leading him back to the place he first saw the human, the human that reminded him of Kei. He didn’t even understand why he was going back, maybe it was to convince himself that it was his mind playing tricks on him, seducing him to loving someone else, or perhaps, the human really was like Kei?
