Chapter One

The sun rose over the horizon, painting the sky in pastels. The faint, wispy clouds, normally white in color, were transformed into oranges and pinks. Below them was a dense forest, and the sun was just beginning to peak over their canopies.

A faint wisp of smoke filtered into the cool, early morning air, cutting into the picturesque sunrise. The source of that smoke was the breath that exhaled from Corellian lungs, the smoke having been taken from the end of a burning cigarette. Jason Hunter, Archpriest of the Krath Order of the Dark Jedi Brotherhood, leaned against the duracrete wall that separated his home from the wilds of the forest below. This house he shared with Onna Alias, the woman that he loved, and sat on a modest plot of land on a world under the control of the Brotherhood. It orbited in the same system as Byfrost, the icy world that was home to Clan Plagueis, but was considerably closer to the star at the center of the system. Thus the temperate climate, despite it being the waning days of the summer season. The deciduous trees of the forest were beginning to change the color of their leaves, littering the view with reds, yellows, oranges and browns. In a few months, all those leaves would be gone, and the mountain upon which they lived would be covered in a layer of white snow. And his clothing, being made of a thin, black, twill-like fabric and cut to resemble more of a traditional Jedi undergarment than something a Dark Jedi might wear, did little to insulate him from the chill air.

Jason looked out on the scenery before him with a content smile upon his face. He brushed a lock of his black-to-purple hair away, tucking it behind his left ear and taking another drag on his cigarette. He loved it there: it was far enough away from his new Clan that he could separate himself from the on-goings of Brotherhood business, yet close enough that he could be at the Clan headquarters at a moments notice. Not just the location, but the scenery, and the refreshing feel it brought to his normally tepid soul.

The life of a Dark Jedi was not as easy as some may assume, especially when one was of high enough rank in an organization like the Brotherhood that certain difficult tasks may fall upon one’s shoulders. But, that wasn’t anything that he wasn’t used to. For years he had served, not just with the Brotherhood, but in the Emperor’s Hammer TIE Corps, the military branch in which he got his true start in life. He had piloted starfighters for years, until his Jedi training pulled out of the cockpit and into libraries, training halls, and eventually battlefields, where his skill with a lightsaber and his command of the Force were tested, instead of his metal as a pilot.

Looking over at the Incom T-65 X-wing parked next to him, he recalled the many times that he had shot down starfighters very similar to it. Many a Rebel pilot met their end at the mercy of Jason’s TIE Defender, and this particular X-Wing belonged to Onna. A gift from Jason, that he had acquired when its’ previous owner had been captured by Clan Tarentum, the Clan that Jason used to belong to. It was a great ship, no doubt, but no match for the Defender in terms of firepower, agility, speed and durability. In the heyday of the Galactic Civil War, the X-Wing was the ruler of the sky. It outmatched the TIE Fighter, a flimsy little thing that couldn’t stand up to anything alone. Strength in numbers was the Empire’s way, overpowering its’ foes with a deluge of fighters, versus using the actual skill of those going to war for them.

That thinking changed when Darth Vader commissioned the TIE Advanced program, going instead for starfighters that could go toe-to-toe with anything short of Star Destroyer. Shields were added, along with more weapons and a hyperdrive. But, despite how great of a step the Advanced was, it paled in comparison to the Defender, which was the highest achievement of Imperial and Sienar Fleet Systems engineering.

The X-Wing before him was anything but stock. Jason had personally upgraded the engines and shields, making the fighter much quicker and tougher to shoot down. It now turned quicker, almost as quick as the TIE Advanced, and could just about catch his TIE Defender in a flat-out sprint. Even the laser cannons had been tweaked, getting a few more ampules of energy into each shot.

“For once, you’re up before I am.”

Jason was broken from his thoughts by the soft voice behind him. He turned to see Onna walking towards him, smiling. Her lithe form was wrapped in a thin, silken night gown, tied loosely at the waist. Her hair, golden at top and fading into a red towards the ends, was pulled back into a sloppy pony tail. She obviously had just awoken.

“Yeah, imagine that,” Jason replied, putting his cigarette out in the ash tray that they kept on the edge of the wall. He enfolded Onna in a warm embrace, hugging her to his body. She returned the hug, burying her face in his muscular chest. After a moment, they pulled back slightly and smiled at each other, until touching lips in a tender kiss. “Good morning, beautiful.”

“Good morning, handsome,” Onna responded, kissing Jason’s chin gently before turning with him to look out at the sunrise.

“Did you sleep well?” he asked, looking down at her.

“Oh, pretty good,” she replied, slipping her arm around his waist. “Had a weird dream, which is when I woke up and noticed that you weren’t in bed anymore.”

“Well, I figured you could use the rest. We’ve been training pretty hard lately, and you’ve seemed kind of beat.”

“Yeah, it did feel good to get a decent night’s sleep,” she said, yawning slightly. “Just, next time you decide to come out here and have a smoke this early, let me know first...you had me scared for a second when I first woke up.”

“Sorry,” Jason said softly, lifting her chin with a finger and kissing her firmly. It lasted longer than he had intended, as she got into it and, lacing her arms around her neck, pulled him into it and kissed him fully. Again, they pulled back slightly, and smiled at each other as they held one another.

“I love you, Jason,” she whispered.

“I love you too, Onna,” he responded, kissing her nose gently. “Come on, let’s go back inside and take a shower...I’m getting kind of cold out here.”
