The Mother Lode
THE MOTHER LODE BY ABRAXIS
Disclaimer and a few author's notes
The usual disclaimer: I do not own Riddick, Jack, Iman nor any other Pitch Black characters I might mention. I do not own any of the other fictional characters and real people that I have made reference to. I claim literary license on those. I have written this strictly for my own enjoyment and that of my fellow fanfiction writers. There is no monetary profit involved.
I have rated this story R. I have no idea if it is, since I have no idea what the ratings guidelines are. I detest censorship in any form and do not care to fill my mind with its petty rules. I intend to say what I want to say in the manner I choose to say it. This rating should do nicely for that.
Now, I feel that an explanation of my view of Riddick is necessary. Riddick has been taken many places in the fanfiction I have read - most commonly, into the psychological bowels of hell. I have returned to the original character as presented in the movie.
That Riddick is "Richard B. Riddick, escaped convict, murder". He is not an uncontrolled psychopath - "Did I kill a few people, sure. Did I kill Zeke ... no." He is not heavy into blood lust. Damn even Carolyn knew he was fucking with her about the blood and peppermint schnapps - "Would you like to shock me with the truth, now."
That Riddick is not a sociopath. He has rules. Rape is not part of his act and children deserve a special courtesy. While he mainly left the adults to their own intelligence, or lack of it, he warned Jack to duck in the sand cat and about the danger of her menstrual blood and warned young Hasan "Just don't run.". But he's not a white knight. If you don't listen to his warnings, not his problem. If it comes down to your survival or his, you lose.
Another of those rules is that, once he has made a deal (not something he does lightly and not something that you can assume he has done), he keeps it as long as you do. He kept his deal with Johns until it came to the cold-blooded murder of a young girl. But, he never actually said the words "I'll come back for you." when he put Carolyn, Jack and Iman in the cave.
A corollary to that is aid accepted from another is a deal made, a debt that requires pay back. It could be argued that he didn't actually accept Carolyn's sacrifice, that it was just what happened. But, let's face it, both she and her sacrifice were too extraordinary, too beyond any other experience in his life, for him to set it aside with that poor excuse. If he thinks of it as a deal, a debt, requiring he attempt to bring his life, his rules, more in line with those the rest of humanity live by, or at least claim to live by, it may be because he finds that easier to deal with than any deeper meaning.
The plot: In his efforts to rebuild his life nearer the acceptable norm, Riddick becomes involved with someone who is trying to do the same thing from a very different starting point.
