Prologue: Si, Senorita

Liljana shifted, the soft fabric of the bed spread getting tangled in her sweaty legs. She sighed and shifted uncomfortably again. It wasn’t even warm outside. Her mind kept replaying the conversations she had had with Sebastian the past few weeks. Sebastian being the new boyfriend. But he wasn’t a replacement for Sands.

No way. No one could replace Sands. Or take that little place deep inside Liljana’s heart.

Sebastian and Liljana had been seeing each other for the past three months and Liljana had recovered from the pneumonia incredibly quickly, although still had a bad cough every now and then.

“Come away with me,” Sebastian smiled.

“For a dirty weekend?” Liljana grinned.

“Yeah. We can go to Mexico”

Liljana’s face fell, “M-Mexico?”

“What’s wrong? You don’t like Mexico?”

“No, I, uh, just seems a long way to go for the weekend.”

“So I’ll get some time off work and we can go for a week!”

Liljana huffed loudly and threw the covers off the bed, got up and crept downstairs to make a drink. She leant against the worktop while waiting for the kettle to boil.

“A toast, then.” Sands and Liljana raised their glasses, “To new beginnings and to us. I was thinking, at Christmas, we should go somewhere. On holiday, or something.”

“That’d be great! Where?”

“I’ve always wanted to go to Mexico...?”

“Me too! I’ve always wanted to try authentic Mexican Tacos.” She chuckled.

Liljana finished making her cup of tea and carried it upstairs before climbing back into bed and sipping it slowly.

“Have you thought any more about Mexico?”

“I’m not sure.”

“Why not? You seem pretty certain that you don’t want to go. Want to tell me why?”

“No, I, there’s no reason…”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah. Just give me a bit more time.”

Liljana sighed into her tea. She climbed from the bed and placed the mug on her desk before booting up her computer, sitting in front of it determinedly. ‘You can’t keep holding onto this. You have to move on, Lil.’
She looked up holidays in Mexico on the internet and booked one for three weeks time, hoping Sebastian would be able to get that week off of work.

After Sebastian and Liljana had lugged their suitcases up the steps to their room in the boiling heat, they went out for a drink to the local bar to cool down. There were very few people about at one o’clock in the afternoon and the bar was practically empty, save an old Mexican man sleeping in the corner with a hat over his face and an empty glass in front of him.

Sebastian ordered a shot of tequila and a tequila sunrise and they drank their drinks in silence, taking in the atmosphere until a Mexican boy cycled up to the bar and dropped his bike outside noisily, running in and up to the bar, speaking rapidly in Spanish to the bar tender, “Senor Sands demands more tequila and lime. He says he wants it now!”
Liljana’s head shot up, catching the name that stood out in the Spanish jumble of words and Sebastian frowned at her.
The bar tender nodded, served the boy a tequila and lime and handed him the glass, taking the money from his hand.

Sebastian chuckled quietly, “Don’t they have laws about serving alcohol to underage kids out here?”

“It must be the heat…” ‘There is no way that could be possible’

“…What?”

“I…never mind.” Liljana shook her head gently and tried to return her thoughts to the sparkly pink umbrella in her Tequila sunrise.

Laying in bed that night, Liljana couldn’t stop her mind wandering back to all the happy times she had had with Sands. And the few nice times she had had with Sebastian. Liljana cursed herself inwardly, reminding herself that she had vowed to let her feelings for him go. But it didn’t work like that. Nothing ever goes to plan.
