A New Year

Marnie yawned as she stepped off the bus with the year's Freshmen. She was transferring to Sky High from Old Salem Heroes Academy. Esmerelda Fuentes aka 'Ez' looked out of the window and noticed that the bus had made its stop at Sky High. Today, like her friend Marnie, would be her first day. Spotting the woman, she placed a hand on the woman's shoulder.

"Mar, you ok?"
Marnie smiled, "You'll get to meet my boytoy..."
She laughed.

"He'll probably roast my ass to kingdom come if he heard me say that."
Ez looked at her with a raised eyebrow.

"Let me think... literally? Do you happen to be dating Warren?"
She scratched the back of her neck.

"We've been IM'ing each other for a couple of summers," Marnie explained, "my dad gave his dad my IM and Baron sent it to Warren."
Ez smiled.

"I don't have any problem with you dating him... in fact, I think he's really attractive and if he makes you happy then I am happy too."
Marnie looked confused.

"He's hot?"
(she's never seen him before). Ez shakes her head in confusion.

"Wait, what am I talking about? forget what I said. I'm confusing myself. This is my first time here."
As the students on the bus file out, she looks at the school.

"Whoa, this place looks amazing."
Just then, a tall guy with long rich dark brown hair, dark eyes and a medium complexion passes by. Another boy of five foot nine with long straight dirty blond hair, light green eyes, a pale complexion and soft smile calls said brunette over.

"Hey Warren, come on, we don't want to be late for class."
Ez recognizes the blond right away as her friend Garret from seventh year in Junior high.

"Marnie, see the blond in the corner, that's my old friend Garrett Williams, I bet the brunette is Warren."
Marnie studied the 6' 3" tall brunette.

"Kinda looks like Baron described him," She said to her friend.
Ez grins.

"So you approve?" She smiles at the girl, "Don't be shy..."
Marnie's eyes flashed back and she turned to her friend.

"Blow me, Ez," She snickered.
Ez laughs. "In front of everyone... sure!"
Marnie rolled her eyes and they returned to their normal blue. She ran a hair through her choppy blonde/brown hair.

The brunette smiled.

"Marnie, I was joking around with you... let's go. We don't want to be late for homeroom."
Marnie sighed, "We have to go to Power Placement first."
"That sounds interesting."
The two girls walk up the stairs into the school and see a sign that directs them to the gym. Marnie groaned as she entered the gym.

"Not him..." She felt like hitting her head on something.
(I'm getting the feeling that she doesn't like Coach Boomer).
"Marnie, you'd tell me if something was wrong right?"
Ez looked at her with a worried expression on her face.

"Please don't hurt yourself."
She fixed her shirt in the back where her book bag bunched it up. As the friends walked in, they came in contact with some fellow students. Among the scared freshman stood an average height woman with purple hair and punk clothing. She stood in the shadows with her arms folded against her chest, a bored expression on her face was evident.

"Boomer..." She hissed, her eyes black, fire crackling at the edges.
Ez recognized the fire blazing in Marnie's eyes. She laughed nervously looking from the teacher to her friend.

"Hey, maybe we can skip this part..."
Marnie grinned evilly, "Oh no, Ez."
She cracked her knuckles.

"I'm going to love this..."
"B-but I thought you hated him..." Ez replied in a stutter.
Magenta, the woman who stood in the shadows walked up to the group.

"Esmerelda Fuentes, right?"
Ez looked at the girl and nodded her head. The woman with the purple hair smiled at her and brought her over to the rest of the freshman class. Marnie snickered, putting a finger to her lips when she looked over and winked at Magenta.

"Can I break him?" She asked her, whining.
Ez looked over at her with a raised eyebrow.

"How and so can you teach me?"
"Watch me," She snickered.
She walked ahead of the students.

"Hey, Boomer, heads up!!" She yelled before sending an energy shot at him.
Coach Boomer's eyes grew the size of saucers (insert comical anime character with the 'I am so screwed' look on their face) and hit the floor, letting the shot sail over him and fizzle out when it hit the wall. Ez watched the scene unfold and grinned.

"That, was brilliant. Simply brilliant.... but you would get into trouble."
Ez looked around to see if anyone saw what was going on. Warren, who kept hidden in the shadows walked out after seeing what he saw.

"How the heck did you do that?"
A smile fell on his face as he walked over to Marnie.

"Warren Peace," The brunette extended his hand in a handshake.
"I know," She grinned at him, "and Boomer's a friend of my mom's."
"You are beautiful, I wish we met beforehand, how long have you known about your magical abilities?" He turned to look over at the 'knocked out' teacher and laughed before turning his attention back to Marnie and smiled.
"I've had them since I was born," She smiled.

Goddess, he is hot, She thought to herself.
Ez watched with the crowd as Boomer was brought back to life and regained consciousness. He was looking at Marnie with a confused expression on his face, shook his head and then tried to remember what was going on. When the light dawned on him, he resumed to the mandatory *power test*. One at a time names were called at random. when Esmarelda's name was called, she took a deep breath in and out and then stood in front of the line. The famous yellow bus descended from the ceiling and Boomer explained the rules. Once the sorting was completed, the woman walked up to he friend and Warren.

"So, how was the conversation.. by the way, I was assigned as 'sidekick'."
Her face contorted into a slight frown but then she shrugged her shoulders.
