Mon Sauveur

Title: Mon Roi
By: Thomas Schiff

It was like she couldn’t breath anymore. The burly guards chased her mercilessly through the streets of Paris. She had nowhere to run. She couldn’t go back to the Cour Des Miracles, not with this many following so closely. She ran into a back alley, her most fatal mistake. She hit the dead end almost throwing herself at the wall as if she could get through. She turned around to see the two guards already almost halfway through the alleyway approaching her.

“Well, well…” One of the guards laughed. “Looks like we found ourselves a little rodent.” The other laughed as well.

“A day in the stocks should put her in her place. Teach her from stealing.” The other nodded as they stocked towards her.

“Excuse me Monsieur.” The guards whipped around to see who had spoken. There at the entrance of the alley stood a man. He carried in his hand one of those whips with thongs of white leather of which so used by rod sergeants in order to control the crowd, and that are called 'boullayes.' He had on his head a type of wide brimmed hat with a yellow feather sticking out of it. He was thin and tall, his chin was crooked his nose was long. Over all not very attractive. “I seem to have lost my way. Can anyone direct me-”

The man was cut of as both of the guards pulled out their swords and angled the blade at him, though he still stood about five feet away from them. “Stay out of this gypsy or you’ll be joining her.”

“Joining who?” The man asked. The guards turned around to point at the gypsy girl but there was no one to be seen. “Looks like you’ve lost your little gypsy girl no?” The man laughed.

“Yeah well looks like your now taking her place.” The guard said. The man laughed.

“Alas, I don’t have the time.” He said before turning out of the alley. The guards chased after him but when they turned the corner he was out of sight.

The gypsy watched from the rooftop as the guards looked around scratching their heads before turning to return to the Cour Des Miracles.
