Chapter POV: Conner
Deich
. Conner lit a cigarette and took a long drag as he jumped into the van that they had used the night before. What Murphy had said to him had made sense but he just didn’t want to admit that, not to himself or to his brother. He just didn’t feel right about having another’s life in his hands. He could handle giving up his own life and Murphy knew the risk in their profession, but with that poor girl he couldn’t risk it. She reminded him too much of the past. Of Jessie, Conner thought, and the way she looked as she slept. Conner took a deep breath as he started the car out of the parking lot. Two weeks, he confirmed to himself, two weeks and she’ll be safe and sound; away from the death and anguish that somehow follow Murphy and me. She’ll be safe.
. He drove for what seemed like hours, as he passed cars and buildings as if there was nothing around him. Conner was lost in his own thoughts and he could not escape the memories of the past. He couldn’t escape the slowed images of watching Rocco’s blood pool around his body, still chained to the damned chair in Yakavetta’s basement. It was as if Conner could feel the sputtering of Rocco’s heart as the muscle beat it’s last, filling with his best friend’s crimson blood. He could still hear his brother’s screams racketing on the inside of his skull as Murphy’s tear-filled, haggard voice called for Yakavetta’s life. He could feel the pain in his own chest as Rocco’s eyes stared up at the ceiling, newly devoid of life. He couldn’t breath because it hurt so much, but they owed it to Rocco to get out of there alive, so he forced himself to breath as he and Murphy worked their way out of their bindings. Conner gulped as he remembered that their father had been so close to killing them, not only once but twice. If they had not took the time to pray for Rocco’s soul, they too would probably have been dead by the end of the night.
. After that day, they had planned out Don Yakavetta’s death. They knew that it would be public, so that wise guys everywhere would know that they would be there to exact God’s revenge upon them all. And they became the vengeful striking hammer of God. That day in the courtroom, Conner had never felt so filled by God’s vengeance and as he heard Yakavetta pray for his life he could only think of Rocco’s lifeless eyes, staring up into space, never to joke around with him and Murph again. Their family’s prayer flowed off his tongue like honeyed wine and as it came to an end, he felt his gun release a lead bullet into the back of Yakavetta’s head. Conner watched Yakavetta’s body fall, as if in slow motion, onto his stomach with gaping holes in what used to be his head and he could only feel satisfied.
. Conner shook his head to clear his thoughts as he looked around. He was there at the car exchange and though it felt as if time flew by, he had only been driving for half an hour. He went into the office and gave the middle-aged, bearded man at the desk the keys to the van as well as $100 in cash.
. “Nice doing business with you,” Conner picked up the new set of keys that the man slid to him, “It’s the hunter green Cadillac Seville, parked near the exit.”
. Conner didn’t say a word as he just nodded, walked out of the room and made his way back to the black van. He checked the car one last time for anything that he or his brother could have left behind. When he found nothing, he left the van and headed for the car that he would drive out of there. Conner checked the trunk, just to make sure that it was empty. When he was satisfied, he got into the car and headed to the closest mall to pick up clothes for the girl as well as some actual food for them all.
. Wal-Mart, he thought getting out of the car and putting out his cigarette, always ending up the Wal-Mart. He thought of the one time that Jessie had dragged him to go shopping for clothes, not for her but for him. She had stayed there for practically half of the day making him try on things and model for her. By the time that he had got home Murphy had been crazy worried, but when told where he had been all day Murphy could not stop laughing. Both Murphy and himself had always hated shopping, though growing up they never had to do much of it because they were poor. Conner drew up a semblance of a smile as he walked into the store and towards the Women’s clothing section.
. Despite the weird looks from female patrons, Conner had finished picking out a small assortment of clothes for the girl. There were large 2 shirts, a pair of pants, a sports bra and a 3-pack of floral underwear. He also grabbed a pair of large flip-flops, but he didn’t know her shoe size. He paid for the things without much of a fuss as he made his way out of the store and to the closest pizza place in order to get them dinner.
A/N: Sorry for such a short chapter... I dunno if this'll get done anytime soon?!? No one reads, so I'm not sure?
