Chapter 10 – Darkness
For the next four days, the sun refused to rise, the only light coming from the eerie glow emanating from everything and everyone, living and dead alike.
Bill Turner was quite satisfied, since, although Will and Jack slept in the same bed, they stayed on completely different watch-shifts, which meant they didn't have to interact with each other at all.
Will Turner was reasonably satisfied, since, although he didn't get to sleep with Jack, he was able to fall asleep with Jack's scent still on the pillow, happy in the knowledge that these accommodations were temporary and only until his father left.
Jack Sparrow was miserable. The gentle Turner he loved so much was temporarily out of bounds to him, and the elder Turner took every opportune moment to remind the pirate that he belonged to HIM, which left Jack sexually sated, but exhausted and bloody every damn evening. "Bill, you've got to give me time to heal, or I'll be dead by the time we reach the treasure."
"Jack, inside this area, and as long as ye glow, ye cannot die unless ye fall into the sea. I could beat ye to a noodle, turn ye inside out and hang ye by your own entrails..." Bill grinned inwardly at the thought.../Have to try that tomorrow./..."and as long as I have ye stitched by the time the glow stops, ye'll be just fine."
"That's interesting." Jack pulled on his breeches and strode slowly out of the cabin, a couple of strips of skin hanging off his back where Bill had beaten him harder than usual.

"Ana, I need your help."
The lump in the hammock gave a muffled snort. "Aye, Jack. And just what help would you be needin' from me?
"Ana, I need you to at least look at me when I speak to you."
"NO! I've seen ye, Jack Sparrow, and I'll not be lookin' at ye again while ye have such an evil visage."
Jack put his hands on his hips. "Ana, I need to stay here with you so that Bill can't get to me."
"You're daft, man! I'll not have a man sleep in my cabin; especially one from the very pits of hell!"
"I must tell you, Ana. With all you've done in your life, you're not looking all that good either. I don't want to bed you, Ana. I just need a place to hide."
"Go sleep with Navy."
"He's out helping the crew sail the ship. He's not that bad, really, especially if you've seen him lately." Jack sat on a barrel labeled "salt pork".
"Aye, I have, and he's fairer than any of the other dead on board, I'll say that for him."
"So you see, I can't stay with him, no protection there."
"So change yer hours to Will's shift and stay with him."
"William doesn't want to see me, he's avoiding me so I'm staying out of his way."
"Can't say as I blame him, Jack. If we didn't need ye to get the treasure, I'd have ordered ye hanged for what ye did to the boy."
"I know. So would I, Ana. So would I." Jack gave up and left the fo'c's'le, panicking everyone he ran across just on the mere sight of him on his way out from below deck.

On the fifth day after the darkness fell, Bill gathered a blindfolded, battered, and exhausted Jack into his arms and laid him on the table. "Good news for you, Jack."
"Aye?" Jack could barely think with all the pain he felt. Bill had fairly cut his back to ribbons, thereby giving Jack one of the longest and hardest peaks of his life. He lay there, not daring to remove the blindfold lest his "master" punish him worse, waiting for the beating to continue and wondered if Bill was actually planning to kill him, but no blow landed. Instead, he felt his back being gingerly put back together and stitched.
"Yes. We'll be at the island by dusk, and that means I must be having you stitched and ready by the time we enter the light."
"Don't ye mean escape the dark?"
"No, Jack. The island is inside a zone of light. As we pass through the curtain, everything will seem normal, but all wounds will heal as if they never existed. Since my son was still healing from your attack when we entered the darkness, he'll have no scars from it."
That DID make Jack happy. His guilt over beating Will was surpassed only by the anguished realization that he'd scarred him permanently, though he knew there were more than physical scars at work.
Once Bill finished with Jack's back, he helped him stagger over to the bed and laid him down, pulling the covers up and taking off the blindfold. He smiled and kissed Jack on the nose. "Soon you'll be free of me, old man. It's been fun, but after ye get the treasure for us, I'll be movin' on."
"So your unfinished business is to get the treasure?"
"Not precisely, but you might as well believe that."
"Bill...I'd like your permission to try to get Will to love me again. He's seen me as I truly am. And I swear on pain of death that I'll never lie to him...or neglect to tell him things he should know about me. Please, Bill? Without young William in my life, I'll be joinin' ye soon, as there's no use t' livin' without him."
The specter before him considered it. "Ye can try. If ye can gain his trust, respect and love, you've my blessing. But if ye ever harm him again, you'll find yerself in hell faster than ye can apologize to me. I have many friends, and so does my son from what I've gathered from your crew. They ALL want t' hang ye after yer back in normal waters, so ye may as well start makin' amends now." Bill left. Jack got up, pulled on his breeches despite the pain, walked gingerly out the cabin door and watched Bill give Will a big, fatherly hug.
Jack heard a strange humming sound and turned to look in the direction from which it came. What he saw astounded him. As the Pearl glided serenely through a shimmering curtain of light that traversed as far as the eye could see, everyone on deck changed back to their former looks, but when it got to Will, the only true living person on deck, Will looked normal, but transparent. Jack's eyes widened, and he raced up the steps to the bridge.
