Chapter 10 – Breakdown, Accident, and the National Enquirer
As filming in Los Angeles proceeded, Jack and Will were regular visitors to the set, though they always left well before dusk.
One Friday evening on the way home, Will’s Hummer broke down on I-405. Will picked up his cell phone and called the auto club. “It’s going to be a while, Jack. There’s an accident on I-10 involving three big rigs and like eighty cars. Every tow truck from here to San Bernardino has been commandeered. So just relax.”
Jack took one look at the sinking sun and pulled out his own cell phone. He called eight different cab companies and four different limo services with the earliest arrival time being two hours. “I hate to say this, Will, but I don’t have that much time. The moon’s already up. Once the sunlight is gone, there’s going to be a problem.”
“Just stay inside the car and as far from the windows as possible.”
Jack climbed into the back seat of the Hummer and lay face down.
As the final rays of the sun disappeared, and they were still on the side of the freeway, Will saw red and blue lights in the rear view mirror. “Jack, stay down; there’s a cop here to help us.”
“Cop?” His voice was muffled.
“Police officer.”
Jack raised his head for only a moment. “Aye. And I’m a bathin’ beauty in St. Tropez.” He tried to think “small”.
“License and registration.” Will handed them both over, along with his insurance card. The officer went back to the police car. Several long minutes passed, and the officer returned. “So, Mr. Turner. May I ask why you’re parked on the side of the freeway?”
“The car broke down and we’re waiting for the Auto Club.” He realized he said “we” and tried to act normal.
The officer looked past Will into the front seat, then through the window in the back where Jack lay unmoving. He knocked on the window and Jack rolled onto his back, acting as if he’d just woken up. “Hello? I’m sorry...I was sleepin’ till the tow truck got here. May I help you?”
“Would you please sit up and roll down the window?”
“Certainly.” Jack sat up in the middle of the back seat, careful to stay out of the moonlight, and opened the window. “Yes constable?”
The policeman shined his flashlight into Jack’s eyes and looked into them, then asked him to get out of the car.
Will was surprised. “What’s wrong, officer?”
“Your friend here may be on drugs. His pupils are dilated and didn’t react to the light.”
Jack balked slightly. /Get me out of this car and you’ll see me react to the light./ He slowly opened the car door and stepped out, instantly changing into his skeletal form. He pulled out his wallet and presented his visa.
The cop didn’t take the card. He stood there for a moment, staring, the color draining from his face, then turned and ran to his car, screaming. He almost caused an accident as he raced away.
In the meantime, passing cars started slowing to a very slow crawl while passing them, craning necks to watch the obvious “movie shoot”. Many waved to Jack, who waved back, grinning.
“Would you PLEASE get back in the car? I don’t want the tow truck to take another five hours to get here, just to see you and drive away again.”
Jack turned and climbed into the back seat and lay down as the traffic began slowly picking up again. “We need to keep a blanket back here or something, lad. I don’t want to be the cause of an accident like I was tonight.”
“Accident? You didn’t cause an accident.”
“Aye, lad, I did. Look out your window to where the constable was standing. See that puddle? The constable took one look at me and pissed his breeches. It’s embarrassing to be the cause of such behavior. I don’t wish to repeat it.”
Will shrugged. “Ok. I’ll put a folded up moving box in the back. If we break down again, you can put it together and climb in.”
“Sounds good. That way, nobody will think you’re covering a body in the back seat with a blanket.”
The tow truck finally pulled up. “Sorry it took so long. You should have seen the wreck we had to clean up. Where do you wanna be towed?”
Will thought about it. “I guess my house. I’ll worry about fixing it later.” He climbed out of the Hummer and waited in the tow truck as the man hoisted the car and attached the chains to the axel, luckily not noticing the unmoving body in the back seat.

“Hey Jack, I think I found your monkey.” Johnny’s voice over the phone was excited. “I happened to come across this article on the cover of the National Enquirer. ‘Pet Monkey Lives with Family for Over Five Generations’. I thought it might be the one you were looking for. The article doesn’t mention zombie or anything, but the supposed age of the monkey made me think of you.”
Jack thanked him and hung up, rushing out the door before remembering how disastrous his driving lessons had gone. He opened the door again and stuck his head inside. “Will! Come quickly! Johnny found the monkey!” It had been three months since he’d met Johnny, and filming was finished except for some catch-up work at ILM.
Will walked down the stairs, grabbing his keys. “Where?”
“Corner store. It’s an article in the National Enquirer.”
Will stopped dead. “The National Enquirer? Then it’s bogus. You said Johnny found it? What’s he doing buying the National Enquirer anyway?”
“I think he said he saw it on the cover.” He rushed in and grabbed Will’s elbow, helping him out the door. “Come on! What if it’s Barbossa’s monkey?!”
“Don’t get too excited. The monkey might be five years old, or it could be a STUFFED monkey in a cage. With the Enquirer, it could be anything.” They got in the Hummer and Will drove down the hill to Lucky market. Jack jumped out of the car and ran ahead, dashing into the store. Will chuckled. “Three hundred eighteen years old and still a kid. I guess pirates NEVER grow up.”
As Will stepped in the grocery store, Jack was just leaving, prize in hand. “Will! It’s him! I recognize that little monster anywhere!”
“Ok, where do they say the family is living?”
“Greece. And you’re not going to believe this, mate. The family’s name is Barbossa.”
