The Importance of the Empire

Chapter 10: The Importance of the Empire

Vader entered the apartment eagerly, his footsteps rapid.

“Ree!” He called out. “Where are you?”

Her voice came from the bedchamber in the back. “I’m here!”

Muttering to himself, he retreated to their bedchamber. He halted in the doorway, staring at the bed. A profusion of rich fabrics littered the bed and Ree was talking to herself as she studied them. She was to be presented to the Emperor tonight and choosing a gown had proven more difficult than she anticipated. She simply had too many.

Vader stared at her, wondering why she suddenly looked so young and innocent. “What are you doing?” he asked in a voice that was harsher than he intended.

Ree flinched and stepped back. “I was trying to decide what to wear to the reception tonight,” she explained rather warily.

With an impatient sigh, he stalked over to the bed and immediately plucked up a simple white gown of Alderaani satin. “This,” he instructed brusquely.

Samri frowned, but took the dress from his hand. “But this one is so…plain,” she commented.

He flashed her a dazzling smile. “It is elegant and innocent,” he replied softly. “Just like you.”

Flushing under his scrutiny, she nodded and hung up the dress. She turned to find him still staring at her. Without a word, he yanked her close to him and his mouth closed over hers in a demanding kiss. His hands came up to the bodice of her simple gown and she gasped as she felt it rip beneath his touch. He pushed it off her shoulders and it puddled at her feet.

His hand immediately went to her breast, squeezing the soft flesh, lightly pinching her nipple.

“Want you,” he panted. “Now…”

She felt her body flying backward onto the bed where she landed with a soft thump. An instant later, he was on her, shoving aside his shirt and tunic and then groaning as bare flesh met bare flesh.

Cursing, he undid his trousers and freed his twitching erection. He roughly pushed apart her legs and thrust into her, almost maddened by need. He buried his face in her throat, muttering an apology even as he stroked inside of her.

Ree felt almost smothered as the rich fabrics of the dresses billowed up around her. He reached down and hooked his elbows under her knees, opening her body to him even further. She moaned at the sensation of him so deeply inside her.

The sound seemed to spur him on and his thrusts grew more rapid. She felt her climax rippling through her and was stunned at how quickly he could send her over that sweet abyss.

Vader groaned loudly, heaved himself off her body and knelt on the bed, dragging her with him, his strokes never losing their rhythm. He supported her legs, opening them, lifting them so that each stroke of his cock brushed that spot inside of her that made her belly clench with want and her sheath quiver around his flesh.

Unable to hold back any longer, Ree let the orgasm claim her. She locked her legs around his lean waist and arched up even higher, impaling herself on his hardness as deeply as she could. He did not slow while she trembled beneath him.

His jaw clenched, his nostrils flared. He pounded into her over and over again until at last he threw back his head and roared out his own completion.

Long, hot spurts of his seed and the slowing of his plunges into her brought Ree back into her body.

At last, he lowered her to the bed and then collapsed beside her.

They both lay there for a moment, regaining their breath. Ree grabbed a handful of crimson shimmersilk and gave rueful smile, wondering if the gown could be saved.

“I’ll buy you a new one,” he murmured.

She had become accustomed to his uncanny ability to know what she was thinking. “May I ask, milord, what prompted your rather…vigorous attentions?”

He frowned, still looking at the ceiling. “Did I hurt you?”

She grimaced as she changed positions. “I expect I shall be somewhat sore in the morning, but nothing serious.”

He wiped away the sweat from his face. “I hate him…” Vader’s voice was cold and bitter.

Samri knew better than to ask whom he hated so passionately. She had a good idea of the identity of the person had raised such ire in the Sith Lord.

He sighed and got up, straightening his tunic and tucking himself back into his trousers. He brushed back his unruly hair in a familiar motion.

“I feel better now,” he conceded quietly.

Feeling an odd sense of peace descend over her, Samri smiled up at him. “I’m glad,” she replied honestly. Ree propped herself up on her elbow, unaware of the tempting picture she made with her dark hair tumbling about her and her cheeks prettily flushed from their latest intimate encounter.

His eyes narrowed as he studied her, then he shook his head. “You’re telling the truth,” he said disbelievingly. The blue eyes softened. “Why do you care what I feel?” He asked her in a voice gone husky. “You are my possession – you belong to me.”

“I belong only to myself,” she corrected. “My soul, my heart – these are my own. Only my body is yours to command. My father taught me the true meaning of freedom when I was a little girl.”

“Your father was a slave?” Vader asked, his tone neutral.

Ree shook her head. “No, but he worked hard to feed us; he was bound to the land. We suffered when the bounty was slim, celebrated when the land let us feast. So in a way, he belonged to the land as much as it belonged to him.” She blinked away tears. “But my father always reminded us that we were not bound by our circumstances, and I thank him for that gift.”

Vader reached out and toyed with one long lock of her hair.

She continued in a soft voice, “He told me that our bodies are like houses – a place we temporarily rest our souls.”

“Luminous beings we are, not this crude matter…” he murmured quietly.

Smiling uncertainly, she nodded. “Yes, something like that.”

Looking into her eyes, he saw her grief for those she had lost. Soon, he would heal this hurt for her as well. She would no longer mourn for those she loved. He ignored the small voice that asked if she might learn to love him as well.

Yes, it was definitely time to put the pieces into play.

Ree dipped in a low, graceful curtsy, spreading the white skirts of the satin gown prettily before the Emperor, her etiquette lessons now appreciated. She did her best to hide the shudder of distaste that ran through her as she looked upon the leader of the galaxy for the first time. She was glad for the veil that shrouded her.

“You keep your little treasure veiled,” Palpatine cackled. “How like you to be so jealous!”

“I protect what is mine, Your Majesty,” Vader replied evenly. “Almost as well as I protect your Empire.”

Palpatine nodded approvingly then turned his sickly yellow gaze back to the veiled figure before him. “I should like to see your companion, Lord Vader.”

Without warning, the pure white veil was floating away from her, coming to rest in Vader’s black glove. For just a moment, she was mesmerized by the sight of the diaphanous veil in his huge, dark grip. Dark and light, strength and fragility.

Then she dragged her attention back on the Emperor and the court full of people surrounding them.

Samri stood straight and tall, ignoring the whispers and pointing fingers. Lord Vader had warned her of the courtiers’ reaction, so she schooled her features into a placid mask that she sensed pleased him.

Palpatine’s eyes moved over body like clammy hands and then he turned to Vader, who waited with seemingly infinite patience at his side.

“You have done well, Lord Vader,” the Emperor said. “She’s a pretty little companion upon which to find your ease.”

Vader inclined his head. “Thank you, Your Majesty,” he replied. “She is amusing – for the moment.”

Samri head the courtiers snicker, but strangely felt no resentment at Vader’s words. To her, they seemed a clever performance, a sleight of hand trick that drew the eye away from the important and toward the mundane. She wondered that no one else sensed what she did.

“Just make sure your new toy does not distract you from the business of keeping peace in my Empire, Lord Vader,” Palpatine reminded him in a low voice meant for his ears only.

“There is nothing more important than the Empire,” Lord Vader assured him.

To Samri, his words had the ring of hard truth.
