Chapter 10 Calm before storm
Karyn felt almost disappointed when Riddick removed his hand, smacked her playfully on her thigh and started to rise.
“Come on Wade, time for lunch!” and by that he simply left the room without looking back.
She almost dropped the blanket when she more or less fell out of his lap and had to fumble to get it to cover her body again.
Silently she followed him out through the corridor and couldn't help staring at the blood once more. She wondered what kind of men they had been, if they had families, if they liked playing the guitar. She wondered if Riddick ever bothered to reflect over the people he killed…
Guess not, she thought; how else could he keep on living this way.
The next couple of days were surprisingly peaceful…, with some exceptions. The two of them didn't talk a lot; just ate their meals together. Riddick was working on some program on the computer and Karyn had found some old books to read. She watched him cautiously every time he moved and was expecting him to approach her at any time. Karyn couldn't help but wonder where he had learned to pilot a ship and hack computers. She would have thought he was a brute but everything she saw indicated a very intelligent, however ruthless, man.
The afternoon on that first day Karyn got a little restless and went for a walk. Not that there were much left to discover after Riddick had disposed of the cryosection, which had been huge with its two floors and a section with additional living quarters.
There was however a lower floor to where they were living, and going through their rations of food Karyn had realized that, depending on how long they would be in space, it was for the better if she could find more somewhere.
Riddick gave her a warning glance as she went for the passage that would take her below.
“I'm…. I'm just going for a walk” she explained, a bit nervously.
He seemed to hesitate for a moment and then shrugged.
“Sure, enjoy yourself” Then he looked down again to the complicated holo screen and shifted a few symbols and looked like he couldn't care less.
Karyn frowned, spun around and left.
Below was a part of the cargo section. Oh! She thought delighted, not all was lost then. To her disappointment though, most of the crates were thoroughly locked, just like when she'd been there before.
Suddenly she felt it again, the stench! It was stronger now; it almost made her throw up.
Karyn was way too curious this time and with a piece of her shirt covering her mouth and nose she carefully walked towards the crate as if it would jump at her at any time. She hadn't had the time to really look at it the last time she was down here, but this was a different kind of storage, it had an actual door instead of the lids of the other crates. With a trembling hand she pushed the lock mechanism and the door immediately slid open.
*************************************************
Riddick heard her scream and then scream again and then a wailing that just went on and on.
He jumped out of the cockpit and in an instant slid down the ladder to the room below.
The sight was priceless.
Karyn lay on the floor, fighting desperately to get up from a slippery red-brown juice that was slowly spreading and there was an awful odor in the air.
Riddick chuckled low and then burst out in laughter.
***************************************************
Karyn looked up as she heard Riddick laugh and yelled in panic “GET ME OUT OF HERE!”
She felt herself being lifted on strong arms and to her relief she was put down on safe ground.
“Curiosity killed the cat.” Riddick chuckled, still looking just a little too amused.
“It's not funny” she sneered. ”It's disgusting!”
Together the looked towards the crate’s opening. It was a cooler, but it must have broken down several weeks before, and it was filled with meat, or what was left of it. The rotten red-brownish mass inside was covered with small white worms and even Riddick had to admit it was a repulsive sight.
Karyn showered for hours that afternoon, not even stopping when the water turned cold. The clothes she'd been wearing she ejected out in space. Riddick had done the same with their rotten cargo, but not after first asking her if she wanted to keep them as pets.
When she finally got out of the shower, Riddick had turned on `silent mode` again and just seemed to ignore her.
Karyn had tried to start conversations a couple of times, like at breakfast the second morning after knowing she would probably live through this, or if you counted it another way, the fourth morning after the horrible day when she woke from the cryosleep.
“How would you like your eggs, Riddick?” she asked lightly, like pretending they did this every morning and this was her routine. She'd found she desperately needed some routines in this strange situation, otherwise she would go insane.
Not that they had any eggs though…
Riddick just shrugged and said nothing.
Karyn cleared her throat a bit nervously and was about to speak again but fell silent as Riddick gave her an irritated glance, turned his broad back at her and left the room. She snapped her mouth shut and wondered what the hell she'd done wrong.
And then there was the shower incident.
