Chapter Ten: Whispers in the dark
“Well, now everything is going well with Sands, don’t you think you should break up with Dave?” Naomi squeezed Liljana’s shoulder in support.
“Oh God. I want to. But I don’t want to hurt him.”
“Well if you and Sands are going to be together, then you have to.”
“But I looked him in the eye and promised him I wasn’t cheating on him.”
“Well, you’re going to have to deal with that, Sweetie. Break up with him and make up a reason why. Then just act as if you just got together with Sands. Hey Presto.”
“I suppose.”
“Come here, Sweetie.” Naomi pulled Liljana into a hug.

“Sit down, Dave. I’ve got to tell you something.”
He chuckled, “You’re not pregnant are you?”
“That’s not funny. And no.” ‘Thank God’ “You know I love you, right?”
“Yes...”
“I really do love you...but, I’m not in love with you any more, Dave. I hate to say it, but to me we’ve become more friends, than partners...”
“But...”
“I’m so sorry, Dave.”
“But, I love you. I’m in love with you.”
“I’m not.” Liljana bit her lip, her eyes watering and walked away, turning the corner and getting a hug from Naomi who was waiting for her.

“I did it. I broke up with Dave.” Liljana linked her fingers with Sands’ as they entered the darkroom.
“What did he say?”
“Well, I didn’t tell him why. So he doesn’t know about us, yet.”
“I was thinking about that. About us...do you want to ‘come out’ as such, and tell people we’re dating?”
“I didn’t think you’d...”
“I want everyone to know that you’re mine.” He said before claiming her lips roughly.
“Me too. So you’re going to be ‘exclusive’ to me now? No more fu.cking around with other chicks?”
“Of course not.”
“Good. I... I need you to know... that I don’t want to be another woman who you fu.ck, then chuck out the next week because you get bored of me because I’m not blonde and I don’t have big tits.”
“You’re not! I swear.” Liljana searched his deep brown eyes and smiled when she saw honesty, “Besides, I like your hair and your tits.” He said, giving them a good squeeze to emphasise his point.

Two weeks went by and Liljana and Sands had let everyone know that they were an item. Most people were supportive of their relationship and they were enjoying being together to the fullest. They spent most of their spare time together, talking, making out or making love.
They were celebrating Liljana’s new job at a gallery in town, at an expensive restaurant, ‘The Ballroom’. Liljana had persuaded Sands to wear a suit and she had chosen a black sparkly cocktail dress for herself.
“When do they want you to start?” Sands asked.
“As soon as I’ve done my exams. It’s going to be great!”
“A toast, then.” Sands and Liljana raised their glasses, “To new beginnings and to us. I was thinking, at Christmas, we should go somewhere. On holiday, or something.”
“That’d be great! Where?”
“I’ve always wanted to go to Mexico...?”
“Me too! I’ve always wanted to try authentic Mexican Tacos.” Liljana chuckled.
After dinner, Sands insisted they go back to his place for a change, with the added mystery of; “Besides, I have a surprise for you.”

Sands led Liljana over to the barn and told her to wait downstairs while he went to do something upstairs. She tried to see where the ceiling had caved in, but only heard a clicking sound every few seconds.
Five minutes later, Sands came down the ladder and covered Liljana’s eyes. They awkwardly manoeuvred their way up the ladder together before Sands uncovered her eyes.
She gasped at the sight. Hundreds of candles were alight around the edges of the room, in the centre was a bottle of champagne, and some blankets strewn about.
She tried to form words, but couldn’t manage it. Sands’ arms wrapped around her waist and they shuffled over to the blankets. She sat down and watched as he popped the cork on the bottle and held it out to her. “I couldn’t find any glasses.” he shrugged.
She smiled and took a sip from the bottle, handing it back to Sands, who took a few mouthfuls. Liljana sighed dramatically, “I wonder what we’re going to do stuck up here on our own...” She giggled as Sands grinned and crawled to her, his eyes clouded with lust.
“I love you.” He whispered.
“I love you, too.”

Sands was awoken by a shuffling sound. He frowned, cuddling up to Liljana more, willing it to go away so he didn’t have to move. As he moved closer to her, she moved back to him in her sleep, moaning lightly as he tightened his arm around her waist.
Just as Sands was lulling back into sleep again, the sound woke him again, this time followed by quiet murmurs and whispers. His eyes snapped open and his body tensed. There were people downstairs. Sands slid out from the blankets silently and pulled his jeans on as quietly as he could, fishing his penknife out of his pocket.
He opened it up and crept towards the ladder, not wanting to wake up Liljana, hoping he could just scare whoever it was away and then go back to sleep. He put a foot on the ladder and it squeaked.
The voices stopped.
‘Well, they’ve heard you now.’ Sands jumped off the ladder, landing on the concrete floor with a thud, holding in a curse at the sharp pain that shot up his legs from the impact. He stood up and took a step forwards, seeing nothing in the dim light.
There was a creak of wood from behind him. He spun around but saw nothing. Suddenly, someone grabbed him from behind, covering his mouth with a smelly cloth. Before he could even think about raising his penknife, his mind went blank and he fell into unconsciousness.
