Chapter 30 - Wrong Turn

Pintel and Ragetti dragged Will in between them along the roughly carved tunnel to the heap of gold and jewels in the centre, Pintel was mumbling along to him.

“No reason to fret. It’s just a prick of the finger, a few drops of blood.” He smiled comfortingly at the lad until Koehler stepped up alongside them his long stride carrying him past quickly.

“No mistakes this time. He’s only half-Turner, we spill it all.” He grasped Wills’ arm and dragged him up to Barbossa.

“Guess there is reason to fret.” Barbossa dragged him up the pile of gold and kicked off the chests’ golden lid. He grasped the blade inside roughly and bent Will over the chest, the medallion glinting from his chest. Oria watched silently, she knew what she had to do.

“Beg your pardon.” Jack sent a grin to Oria and Sara who was being held at the other side of the cavern by two pirates, neither looked at all astonished at his arrival as he pushed his way through the rest of the astounded pirates.

“Begun by blood…” Jack pushed aside a particularly fat pirate with a look of distaste.

“Excuse me.”

“By blood un…” Will looked up noticing the uncomfortable mutterings of the pirates.

“Jack!” He wriggled against Barbossas’ grip but the pirate held firm. The disturbance caught Barbossas’ eye and he stared down disbelievingly.

“It’s not possible.” Jack grinned and continued on his way up the steps.

“Not probable.” Will struggled again.

“Where’s Elizabeth?” Jack smiled at him and waved his arms loosely.

“She’s safe, just like I promised. She’s all set to marry Norrington, just like she promised. And you get to die for her, just like you promised. So we’re all men of our word really except for Elizabeth who is in fact a woman.” He frowned deeply as if he had confused himself before smiling absently.

“Shut up, you’re next.” Barbossa snarled as he bent back to preparing to slit Wills’ throat. Jack glanced back at Oria with a knowing smirk. He was going to keep his promise this time, all four of them were going to get out of this unharmed.

“You don’t want to be doing that mate.” Barbossa paused and mocked looking thoughtful for a few seconds.

“No I really think I do.” Jack shrugged carelessly and muttered.

“Your funeral.” Barbossa closed his eyes in annoyance and slowly lowered the blade.

“Why don’t I want to be doing it?” Jack grinned.

“Well because…” He attempted to step forwards only to find Bo’Suns’ hand on his shoulder restraining him. Jack slapped at it till the man finally let go and strode forwards, “Because the HMS Dauntless, pride of the Royal Navy, is floating just off shore. Waiting for you.” A general cry of upheaval swept through the ranks of pirates gathered and Barbossa glared down at him angrily as if trying to discern the truth. Jack scrambled neatly up the pile of jewels and trinkets to stand on the other side of Will.

“Just hear me out, mate. You order your men to row out to the Dauntless. They do what they do best. Robert’s your Uncle, Fannie’s your Aunt, there you are with two ships. The makings of your very own fleet. ‘Course you’ll take the grandest as your flagship, and who’s to argue? But what of the Pearl? Name me Captain, I’ll sail under your colours, I’ll give you ten percent of me plunder and you get to introduce yourself as Commodore Barbossa, savvy?” Barbossa glared down at him.

“I suppose in exchange you want me not to kill the whelp?” Jack shook his head and gesticulated wildly.

“No, no, not at all, by all means kill the whelp. Just not yet.” Oria waited, she had to bide her time for the exact moment to intervene.

“Wait! My medallion is not the last.” Everyone stared at him disbelievingly and Oria’s eyes widened in horror as he threw her entire plan down the drain. Eight years of planning and re-planning and now upturned by the very lad she had been planning for, “I’ll tell you who has it in exchange for my life.” Barbossa stared dumbly at the lad.

“Who has it and we’ll spare your life?” He repeated dumbly. Will nodded towards Oria, her eyes slipped closed as Barbossa glared at her furiously, “Search her from head to toe.”

“It’s in the leather guard on her right wrist.” Will shouted out, Ragetti pulled the guard off and tore the medallion free. Everyone stared in disbelief, Oria glared at Will.

“Why couldn’t you have just kept your trap shut! I had everything under control!” Jack stared between the medallion and Oria in mild disbelief but shrugged, he could work with that, “I will not give my blood.” Barbossa shrugged and nodded to Sara.

“Bring the girl to me.” Jack froze in fear; he doubted that Barbossa would be gentle or even remove minimal blood. Oria started laughing with amusement and shook her head with a smirk.

“Oh Barbossa, you’re so predictable… but… I’ve got something that you need to know.” She smiled winningly and stood up straighter, prouder avoiding Jacks’ gaze, she knew he would not want to hear this. Would not want to know that this had been her back-up plan all along, he wouldn’t want to hear the truth.
