Jack blinked once in confusion, and then let out a nervous, shaky laugh. Wow, she must have bumped her head harder than I thought! But even as the thought entered his head, he still felt panicked. He looked at her. She looked back blankly. Even though her face was pale and her breathing uneven, her expression was still blank. She’s being serious. Jack slowly walked towards her, not trusting himself to even think. He was exhausted and his head hurt but he couldn’t sleep, he was too shocked, too scared, too confused. Gently, he grabbed her hand and, with his own, began rubbing lightly whilst he positioned himself on the edge of the bed. He stared deeply into her tear filled eyes, she seemed slightly calmer now.

“Luv, it’s me Jack” he said softly, with a hint of pain in his voice. She just stared back, clearly confused.

“Do I know you?” Jack felt slightly faint and got to his feet. He walked swiftly to the cabin door, opened it and shouted at the top of his voice.

“Mr Gibbs!” Seconds later, Gibbs came running into the cabin, asking what was wrong. Jack explained everything; the storm, the injury, the unconsciousness.

“And she doesn’t even know who I am!” Jack cried, sounding on the verge of tears and exhaustion. Gibbs clapped him on the shoulder and walked over to Lizzie’s side of the bed.

“Do you know who I am, lassie?” Elizabeth shook her head sadly.

“Do you remember anything? About…anything?” Another shake. Gibbs turned to Jack, a sad expression on his face.

“Amnesia, Jack. She has amnesia. It’s not as bad as it sounds” he said hurriedly at the look of horror on Jack’s face.

“She will probably get her memory back. But I’m not sure how long it will take”

“But she will definitely get it back right? Jack inquired. Silence. His insides turned to ice. No, she will do, she has to…

By now, the sun had risen over the Caribbean, and the air was hot, it smelled fresh. Like the freedom. The atmosphere inside the cabin was tense, cold yet nothing could be done. Gibbs had left the Captain alone with Lizzie and took over Captain duties for the day, getting the decks scrubbed. Jack sat with Lizzie on the bed, unable to think of a single thing to say; several times he opened and closed his mouth.

“Lizzie, luv? Do you remember anything?” She silently shook her head, but a tear was sliding down her face. His heart ached, this wasn't her fault, why couldn’t it have been me? He leaned forward, and using his thumb, wiped the tear away.

“It’s okay luv, you’ll get your memory back soon.” He smiled lightly at her but she didn’t return it. Several moments of silence went by.

“Jack?”

“Mmm?”

“How did this happen? I mean…what happened to me?” Jack stared at her for a moment; he considered lying to her for a moment but shook the thought out of his head. He’d never managed to successfully lie to her, and anyway, he didn’t want to confuse her anymore.

“Well, luv it was something like this. It was late one evening and you and I were on deck, you know, talking? And then you smiled a me and gave me one of the sweetest kisses I’ve ever had” He added playfully, trying to rid some of the tension in the atmosphere. Lizzie had a shadow of a smile on her face as Jack recounted the rest of the story in much detail; the rain, the storm, Lizzie going to the cabin, her leaving the cabin to check on him. He suddenly froze. Lizzie looked at him, concerned.

“Jack?” No response.

“Jack!?” He didn’t answer. Up until now, he hadn’t dwelled on the reason why Lizzie had been out of her cabin. Up until now. It’s my fault! She only came out to check on me. If I hadn’t been for me and my stupid determination to steer the Pearl through the storm this would never have happened; me and Lizzie would be talking right now, her telling some silly joke or pulling a silly face. This is all my fault! The cabin suddenly felt very warm, and Jack felt claustrophobic. He needed to get out, he stood up.

“Lizzie, I’m just going for a bit of fresh air luv. You don’t mind, do you?” Still looking concerned, she nodded at him and Jack practically ran out the cabin, his eyes stinging with tears. He didn’t stop running until he reached the railing and he was leaning over, staring at the waves. He tried to push the idea out his head but it was no use. He took several deep breathes, trying to calm himself. He stayed there was several moments until he felt he could face her again. Taking one last deep breath, he walked slowly into the cabin again. He walked to the bed, finding Lizzie holding her head in her hands. She was in tears again, and Jack had to admit he’d never seen a woman cry so much. But never did he feel sympathetic towards one, except now. He wriggled his way onto the bed and put a comforting arm around her, and she nuzzled her head into his chest. Her sobs racked her body and Jack felt himself shake slightly from the impact.

“I’m scared, Jack. I don’t know or remember anything!” she cried out. Jack hugged her even tighter.

“It’s okay luv, you’ll be fine in a couple of days, I promise!” He whispered to her.

“Do you promise?”

“I do, luv” he whispered back. This was a promise he fully intended to keep. His comforting words seemed to have an effect on her as her sobs were not as loud as before but Lizzie never looked up to see the silent tears trailing down Jack’s face.
