Chapter 9 – Stabbed?
Sand shifted under her fingertips as Oria slowly regained consciousness. Her mouth was as dry as the sifting granules that cushioned her hotly, searing against her skin as it absorbed the heat of the unforgiving sun. Easing herself shakily onto her hands and knees Oria glanced around the valley. Her eyes rested on a figure dressed in black sat nonchalantly in the curve of a dune and watching her with a foul grin.
“Bugger.” Oria whispered as she slowly sat back onto her heels, “What do you want?” She squinted at him, the man being framed by the glittering sands and glaring rays of the mid-day sun.
“You stabbed me.” The man accused and Oria nodded as she stumbled back onto her feet swaying slightly in the crushing waves of heat.
“I’ve stabbed a lot of people what makes you so special.” She retorted waspishly in no mood to tolerate any silly mind games. The man rose and sidled down the slope to stand in front of her.
“Because you stabbed me while I slept. That is not fair play.” The man chided her, stepping close enough for his body heat to register on her skin.
“Neither is shooting an innocent child that has yet to be born.” Oria whispered as Barbossa chuckled. She brushed past him harshly and stumbled halfway up the dune before pausing at the pirate’s continued voice.
“I thought that Jack had settled that debt when he killed me the first time.” Barbossa shouted after her, she slowly turned around and stumbled back down the slope to stand in front of him.
“Jack Sparrow killed you for stealing his ship. I killed you for killing the baby. I’d say that was fair.” Oria stated, her eyes resting on his. “Now if you don’t mind, point me in the direction of the ocean.” She whispered, the pirate stayed silent, Oria nodded and turned on her heel to find it herself.
“Oria.” Barbossa called after her. She sighed in annoyance, her head rolling back on her shoulders.
“What?” She shouted back in exasperation not bothering to turn around and face him.
“The ocean’s that way.” Barbossa pointed in the opposite direction as Oria slowly turned to cast him an evil glare.
“How do I know that you’re not lying?” Oria accused as she slipped back down the slope to him.
“You’ll just have to trust me on that. Won’t you?”
:/
Will slipped into the morning room; the light wood doors opposite the seat only partially open giving nothing more than a glimpse into Elizabeth’s bedroom. Jack skipped in with Sagar once the butler had disappeared. The lad once again firmly attached to his belt much to the pirate’s annoyance and increasing distress at the lad’s insistence. Silence pervaded the room for several seconds till Elizabeth appeared, clutching her dressing gown about her.
“Will? You wanted to see me?” her soft voice whispered over the uneasy silence that had been developing as the pirate and young boy argued quietly. William rose from his chair respectfully and gave a little bow.
“Elizabeth, we…” Instantly she looked suspicious.
“We?” She whispered, her tone instantly disapproving.
“I meant I…” Will stumbled on only to be interrupted once more.
“We is correct.” Jack stepped out from the shadows, slightly less dignified with the presence of the boy trundling along on his belt.
“Jack? Will, what’s going on?” Elizabeth clutched her dressing gown tighter about her nervous at the presence of the pirate. She sidled slightly closer to Will, her eyes watching the pirate warily. All those previously forgotten thoughts flooding back to her in a rush that Elizabeth was definitely not comfortable with. At least not now that life looked as if it was going to become normal.
:/
Oria stumbled up the final dune, Barbossa close on her heels. She sighed with relief and gave a faint laugh at the glittering of the ocean brushing against the beach. “See, unlike some pirates I can be trusted.” Barbossa quipped.
“Aye, I get the message. You still deserved what you got though.” Oria sniped as she slipped down the final dune and jogged to where the ocean caressed the sand lovingly. She ploughed in up to her knees and splashed the sparkling liquid into her face.
“So, we’re even.” Barbossa queried as he watched from the beach. Oria glanced back at him; slowly she straightened and wiped a droplet of water from her chin as she strode back to him.
“I suppose so,” she whispered after a thoughtful pause. “After all, I did send you down here.” Barbossa smiled faintly and offered a hand; Oria ignored it and set off along the coastline. Slowly the pirate lowered his hand and trailed after her.
