Chapter 10
Tyler and Reid stared at each other for several moments.
“How are you feeling?” asked Reid softly.
Tyler groaned. “Everything hurts,” he answered truthfully, knowing it would be utterly pointless to try and lie to Reid.
Reid gazed at him for a moment, taking in all the bruises, and the jaded look in his eye. Tyler wasn’t going to be the same for a long time. He sat down in the chair and moved to touch the other boy’s shoulder, but Tyler flinched. Reid looked pained.
“Sorry,” said Tyler quickly, “I just… I don’t think I can deal with…”
“I know...”
Tyler sighed and settled back against the pillows, closing his eyes. “Don’t blame yourself Reid, your as much a victim as I am. Things are going to be bad, but it would be better if you didn’t blame yourself.”
Reid gulped and nodded. “Okay.” He’d never been able to refuse Tyler anything when he spoke in that tone. Tyler opened his eyes and gave Reid a disbelieving look.
“Go to sleep Baby Boy,” said Reid. He suddenly needed to be out of there. Tyler nodded and was soon asleep once again.
Reid stood and gently stroked Tyler’s hair, guilt coming in droves. “I love you, Tyler,” he said softly before walking out of the room.

Four months later
“So… you’re Ascending in three hours.” Tyler turned his head to gaze at his best friend, who was sitting on his desk. On top of Tyler’s math homework to be more exact.
“Yeah, I guess I am,” he said quietly, adjusting his tie for the fifth time. Caleb had insisted that, with Tyler being the last one to Ascend and all, they had to have a party. A special one. With suits and ties and all that crap. As much as Tyler hated that, even he had to admit he did look fantastic in a suit, which made him suspect it had been Reid to suggest the suit idea to Caleb in the first place. That thought would usually have made him snort and roll his eyes, or it would have four months ago, but now he was a little preoccupied.
“He’s not going to come back,” said Reid, picking up on Tyler’s worry. He’d practically been Tyler’s shadow since the ‘incident’, as Pogue and Caleb referred to it in conversation, much to Tyler’s disgust. He wasn’t going to break at the mere mention of it. He suspected that much of Reid’s behavior was caused by the nagging sense of guilt he obviously still felt, but things were getting better. Tyler didn’t flinch at all physical contact anymore.
“I know,” he replied, but he didn’t sound convincing.
“He’s trapped in an amulet that’s been put in a chest, weighed down by rocks and thrown into the middle of a lake. He’s gone, and if he ever comes back it won’t be in our lifetime.”
Tyler nodded and turned around, gasping when he realized Reid had moved and was now standing directly in front of him.
“You know, I’ve always found your ability to completely mess up something as simple as doing up a tie absolutely amazing. And hilarious,” he said, reaching up and fixing Tyler’s tie. Tyler tried to be insulted, but that’s incredibly difficult when Reid is standing that close, both because of Chase and because of the attraction that had always been there. He gulped.
Reid finished what he was doing and looked back up into Tyler’s eyes. Then he leaned forward and kissed him softly.
“Nobody going to hurt you now,” he said softly when he pulled back, “I promise. May the threat be Chase or rabid fan girls, I’ll protect you.” Then his trademark grin crossed his face. “Now come on. Best not keep our fearless leader waiting.” Tyler, still a little shocked, shook himself and nodded, following him towards the door.
Reid grabbed Tyler’s car keys from their spot by the door and held them in the air. “Oh, and if you tell Caleb about that chick flick moment before, you’re not going to be seeing these again.” Tyler snorted and shooed Reid out the door towards a new phase in both of their lives.
The End!
