Epilogue
“I’ve waited a long time for this.”
The Lord Marshall pulled Jade off the small shuttle that had just landed on the dark, desolate planet hidden away on the outskirts of the galaxy and led her a few hundred meters to a large stone formation.
“This is it,” he chuckled maniacally and pressed her up against a rock wall. Suddenly the wall seemed to glow. His smile broadened as he released her hands from the shackles and pulled them out to the sides. She gasped as the wall felt malleable and she half sunk into it before it solidified again, making her a part of it. She was trapped in the rock, unable to move.
“What are you doing to me?” she asked as the fear gripped her.
He smiled at her and rubbed his hands together. “A long time ago I was told a prophecy. It spoke of a wondrous place called the Underverse. A place that you can only get to by crossing the threshold, what you refer to as death, unless you have a key. And I have that key. That key is you.”
Jade stared at him incredulously. “What the fuck are you talking about? You’re insane!”
“No my dear I’m not. The prophecy spoke of a woman who holds the key to the Underverse within her. Once I find that woman and use her to access the Underverse I will become the greatest Lord Marshall of all time. I will be invincible. No one will have the power to defeat me.”
“Nobody?” she asked convinced that this man was the worst sort of crazy.
His features darkened for a moment. “Well there was one according to the prophecy, but that has been taken care of.” His eyes glowed with purpose again as he pulled out a blade and held it at Jades palm. Pressing the point of the knife into her skin he drew blood. Jade winced in pain.
“We are born into this verse through the blood, body and pain of a woman, it is only fitting that we are able to enter the next verse the same way.”
Removing the blade from her hand he moved to her other palm and sliced into that one too. Jade stifled a moan as the pain doubled and began a futile struggle to move. Blood dripped from her outstretched palms and began to stain the rock that trapped her. The glowing in the rock strengthened and a low hum sounded in her ears. The pain spread from her hands through her outstretched arms and into her body gradually building in intensity until it finally reached its crescendo, the point at which she couldn’t bare it any more. She opened her mouth to scream but nothing came out.
The torturous pain consumed her, pulling her to the brink of insanity, almost making her wish for death. Squeezing her eyes shut, she tried to focus her mind on anything other than the anguish, tried to distract herself from the agony that raged within her. She clawed through the nightmare looking for solace, her mind reaching desperately for memories of her children but the pain kept pushing them away. “NO!” The word screamed in her head, edging past the torment and anchoring onto the images of her girls. She concentrated hard, pulling them in, bringing them into focus, willing them to stay.
Abruptly the pain seemed to double, making her gasp and shattering the images that were keeping her sane. To her horror she felt something ripping from within her, like the cold hands of death had reached in and removed her very soul. A mind numbing emptiness consumed her, she felt completely cold and empty except for a warm tingling at the very tip of her fingers on her left hand.
The Lord Marshall stood before her mesmerized by the events unfolding in front of him. He had no idea what would happen when he brought her here but this surpassed all his expectations. He watched the blood drip out of her wounds and stain the glowing rock, watched her trying to scream, trying to writhe in the absolute pain. Suddenly he saw something move out of her body. A ghostly image of her was ripped out and slammed into the rock next to her. She was connected to it only by the tips of her fingers. There was a loud roar and a powerful force flung him back several meters. He landed with a thud on the solid ground, his head striking a rock hard enough for him to lose consciousness. Regaining his senses quickly, he pulled himself up, feeling the growing lump on his head. Slowly he moved towards her, his astonishment turning into a triumphant smile. Between the corporeal Jade and her ethereal soul, just where their fingers touched, stood a shimmering vortex. Beyond that vortex bathed in an eerie orange glow, he could see the tall dark imposing gates. The gates to the Underverse.
His body began to shake as he realised that the prophecy was about to be fulfilled. He was about to become the greatest Lord Marshall in history, he was about to become invincible, no not just invincible, immortal, a god. Stepping through the vortex he felt an unsurpassed euphoria and he laughed.
