Chapter Ten

We headed down the hill, back to where we’d left my car. I was sore from climbing that rope and still a little sore from making love with Rowsdower, but basically felt good. As we descended, the sun began rise. It had been less than two days since I first learned the cult was back, and barely 24 hours since we first learned the nature of the artifact. A lot had happened between me and Rowsdower in that time.

I was more interested in what would happen between us in the future.

As we neared the bottom of the hill, Rowsdower put his arm around me. I glanced at his arm again, but could see nothing through the holes in his clothes.

He saw me looking. “It’s gone again. I checked.”

We found my car, not far from where the cult had parked theirs, and just a few meters from the equipment shed. I started to look in the shed for a pick, or something I could use as a weapon, then remembered the gun in my belt. I drew it again and warily approached the body of Caliban. I finally got close enough to see the hole in the back of his head, and knew no one would have to be afraid of him again.

“C’mon kid,” Rowsdower said to me. “Things may be finished here, but we still have to go help Mike and the other archeologists.”

I wasn’t worried. I knew that together, Rowsdower and I would figure something out. As long as we were together.

We got in my car, and together Rowsdower and I drove into the light of a new day.
