Chapter 11 Pillage
Stepping back from Will, Jack pointed toward the helm “Take the wheel, savvy?” Opening his eyes wide with shock, Will regarded Jack, “I don’t know what I’m doing Jack…” Breaking eye contact, Jack pulled the boy towards the wheel and pushed him into position, “Trust the Pearl lad, and she’ll do the rest.” Turning Jack left Will to the helm; they didn’t have much time and much still needed to be done in preparation for the fight. Looking down on the lower decks Jack eyed his men. All had so far proven them selves’ capable ors;ors; it was now time to see if they were worth their salt as Pirates.
“Avast ye dogs load the canons and get to your stations we’re about to go hunting.” Jack ordered out to his men. A loud cheer went up among them as they glanced starboard and saw the merchant vessel floating about three hundred leagues off. Gibbs and Anamaria took charge of the men knowing that the captain would want to get back to the helm and to a certain young pirate.
Upon Jack’s return, Will stepped back from the helm returning the position to the captain. Jack however had other plans and shacking his head, he stepped in behind, young Turner. Wrapping his arms around the boy, Jack returned Will’s hands to the spokes of the pearl’s wheel. Turning his head, Jack tenderly kissed the boys cheek, “Luv, are you sure?” A single tear built up inside Will’s eye. He wasn’t sure…but life as he had known it had been violently ripped away from him, and he now whether he liked it or not, he was a pirate and it was time to show that he was a pirate. Brushing the tear out of his eye, Will turned and returned the kiss, this time meeting with Jack’s lips. “Yes Captain, it is time to except my place in life. And it is time to prove that I am what I say I am. A pirate, and a good man.” Smiling a gold plated smile, Jack released Will and moved in to take the helm from the boy. “Go get your sword Will.” Jack replied.
When Will returned only moments later, all activity had ceased. Pirates stood idly by the sides of the deck watching the ship draw closer and closer to their intended unsuspecting pray. Raising his eyes, Will caught sight of the English flag dancing in the breeze over head, drawing the merchant ship into believing that they where nothing but a friendly ship floating out in opening waters. Returning to the helm, Will stopped at Jack’s side handing him his pistol and sword that he had left inside the cabin earlier during the day. Nodding thanks to the boy Jack stepped back and pulled Will in front of him once again trapping him between the pearl and his own body.
“When this starts you stay close to me, Gibbs or Anamaria. Do you understand luv?” Jack questioned while hugging Will tightly to his chest. “Don’t go off doing anything half cocked, chances are they’ll surrender the minute they realize who we are…but if they don’t things aoingoing to get ugly real fast I won’t lose you!” “Jack…I can take care of my…” “Whelp! I’m not asking you as a friend or lover, I’m telling you as your Captain! And as your Captain I expect for you to yield my advice or get down below deck and stay there. Savvy?” “Savvy Jack, I’ll do as you have instructed.”
Gibbs and Anamaria joined Jack and Will on the quarterdeck just as Jack was once again releasing Will from his grasp, and taking charge of the Pearl. “The men are ready, Ja…” Throwing a glare over his shoulder, cutting Anamaria off, Jack raised an eyebrow. “…Captain.” Ana corrected, earning a gold filled smile from Jack. “Good.” He replied before tg thg the spyglass in hand and opening it. Looking out across the water, Jack smiled to him self; the merchant vessel was sailing perfectly into the trap in which he had laid for it, now only about two hundred leagues off.
Keeping his eye on the ship, Jack watched, waiting for the vessel to enter one hundred leagues distance, at that time and at only that time would Jack spring the trap. Anything too soon would complicate things, and that was simply something that Jack wouldn’t stand for. His Pillaging and Plundering skills where a science, the soul reason the Pearl and he were so well known, there were no room for mistakes. Jack was an expert.
All at once the eerie silence that had settled over the crew as they waited for word from their captain, concerning their pray was shattered, “Raise the sails, and run out the sweeps.” Jack called out ordering his men, as he stirred the Pearl right at the merchant vessel. Like clockwork or a dance the men strung into action, each knowing exactly what to do. Will remained by Jack’s side just as the man had ordered. Watching the crew with fascination, Will edged closer over to Jack. He wasn’t scared per say, but he wasn’t comfortable either, it just didn’t sit right in his stomach. “Load the canons ye dogs, and raise the Jolly Roger!” Jack continued to yell out.
Sure enough just as he had suspected, upon seeing the pearls battle stance, the merchant vessel pulled hard to port and began its feeble attempt of escaping. Yet it held no chance, as the Black Pearl was the fastest ship in the Caribbean. Stirring the wheel just enough to catch full wind in the sails, Jack began the chase. It didn’t take long for the Pearl to near the ship enough to catch the name proudly painted across the back, The Spanish Wind. Upon seeing this a cheer went up among the crew, these were no merchant sailors, but Spanish pirates, sailing in a merchant ship under disguise. The probability of Spanish gold present upon the ship was high.
Within moments the pearl was along side, The Spanish Wind. And seconds later it was passing, “Hard to Starboard, rack the port Ors,” Jack eagerly called out. Will realized it was Jack’s intention to cut the smaller ship off and started to grow concerned, he hadn’t noticed the name on the ship, and was starting to wonder why they had surrendered yet, unease growing in the pit of his stomach. Jack paid, Will no mind his mind was full of Spanish gold and Pirating. Raising his hand, Jack signaled the men to their canons, all the while keeping an eye and the Spanish Wind, so they wouldn’t ram them. When things finally where in place he lowered his arm, “Fire ye dogs.”
Cannon fire exploded around them sending puffs of smoke up into the air, the souf spf splitting wood evident around them as holes where blown into the side of the Spanish Wind.
“Make ready the hooks and prepare to board.” Jack yelled out to his crew. Will listened to Jack, again struck by how menacing he sounded. In distance he also could hear the frantic orders of the Spanish captain as he tried to keep his men under control. Closing his eyes, Will tried to block out the images that surrounded him and calm his breathing. A hand started him out of his thoughts, opening his eyes he was met with the dark concerned one’s of Jack. “Lad, go lock your self in my cabin, you aren’t looking so well.” Swallowing hard, Will shook his head, “No Captain…I’m fine. I’m staying in this fight.” Jack’s gaze remained locked with Will’s for a moment, and then broke with a nod of head. “Stay close.” Jack replied before once again turning his back on the boy.
Will looked out around him the smoke had cleared. The dead bodies of several Spanish pirates littered the deck of the Spanish Wind. Grappling hooks and ropes had been stretched out between the two ships and several of the Pearls crew had already boarded the other ship and stood fighting. A plank was being lowered between the two. Will swallowed hard, and turned following Jack towards the plank. Drawing his sword out, Will jumped into the fray once his feet landed on the deck oe Spe Spanish Wind.
Swords whirled around clanking into each other, pain filled cries echoed through the air, their origins unknown. Memories flashed, of a time only months before when he had been battling pirates much like he was now…only that time it had been the cursed pirates of Barbossa’s crew, a fight that they had never held a chance of winning. As suddenly as the memories had appeared they where gone, just in time for Will to spin around and block the blade of a cutlass from piercing his tender flesh.
The fight was thick, and he lost sight of Jack. But it couldn’t be helped, as he continued in the fray of things, slashing and twirling his blood-covered blade. Finally the battle began to lessen, and he was once again able to catch sight of Jack. The crazy captain stood fighting a man about his same size, holding his own. Slashing his own sword into the side of his opponent Will moved towards Jack, leaving the pirate whom he had just stabbed to crumble to the ground in a heap.
Raising his arm to his forehead, he wiped the dripping sweat off his face. The battle had been long and hard, but cleansing. He once again felt like a new man. Stopping within feet of Jack, Will realized the man to be the captain of the Spanish Wind. A man half Jack’s age, maybe five or six years older than Will, however despite the age difference Jack appeared to be holding his own quiet well.
Catching sight of Will standing near by Jack quickly chanced a glance in the boy’s direction. Despite what he had told the boy about sticking close, he had managed to lose the boy right in the thick of things and had been worried about his lover’s condition since. Will appeared to be fine, only a few small scratches dotting his fine features. Smiling Jack turned back to the fight, just as the Spanish Wind’s Captain pulled a hidden blade and stabbed it into Jack’s upper thigh. Sending Jack Sparrow to the deck of the ship in agony, his life flashing before his eyes.
Yelling out in anger, Will sprang at the enemy captain, sword held high. Before Jack had even hit the deck. Bring his blade up in anger, Will slashed at the Captain drawing the man away from Jack, so that Gibbs, Anamaria or another crewmember could get Jack out of harms way. Will was determined not to let anything else happen to his lover.
The two opponents circled each other, both expert swords men, yet both tired as well. Their eyes locked together, as they circled, watching the other for the slightest bit of movement to signal their next attack. Will managed to stay between the captain and Jack, protecting the one he loved though it wasn’t easy. Twitching his forearm just enough, Will managed to make the Captain lunge at him, sword held high. However since this was just what he wanted, Will was easily able to block the strike and slash out with one of his own. Tearing into the flesh of the Captains arm.
Behind them, by now Jack with the help of several of his men was standing up. Watching with both fascination and worry, while Will and the Spanish Pirate Captain, fought in what appeared to be a dance both had worked on for many years. Locked in epic battle if you will. His leg was in agony, yet he refused to be carried off the ship, not when Will was still so close to harms way. His breath hitched as he saw the older Pirate slash his cutlass at Will, but lucky for him Will saw the attack coming and managed to jump out of the wit with little difficulty.
However apparent that it was that both where excellent swordsmen, it was also apparent that both where tiring and starting to make sloppy mistakes. Jack held his breath hoping against hope that Will wouldn’t be the first to make a mistake. Yet luck wasn’t on Jack’s side that day, and what with Will still mentally exhausted frll tll that had happened earlier that day, Will was the first to make a mistake.
As the Pirate Captain lunged for him with his cutlass, Will jumped up and flipped away from the man, yet the pirate captain was quick on his feet and raised his sword, catching Will’s lower back, just above his hips with the tip of his blade. Sending a shower of Will’s blood down onto the deck and causing the young sword smith turned pirate to lose his tight flip and fall to the deck, much the same as Jack had before, screaming in agony.
Jack wasted no time and lunged for the Spanish Captain, catching the man still locked in his victory from stabbing Will. Jack was able to sneak up behind him and slice his own cutlass straight through the Captains heart, killing him instantly.
Unable to stay on his feet any longer, Jack crumpled to the ground inches from the still form of Will. Crawling towards the boy, Jack frantically searched for a pulse or any sign of breathing from the young man. Sighing in relief as he found what he had hopped to see, Jack pulled the younger man into his arms and proceeded to try to wake young Turner from the state of shock that he was in.
Anamaria walked to Jack and Will’s side, and dropped to her knees. Reaching around Will’s back, Ana lifted the boys now blood soaked shirt and took a look at the gash that lined his back. It didn’t look to good for the boy; he needed medical attention immediately, as did Jack for his leg, in which the knife still stuck. Turning she regarded Gibbs with a concerned look, letting the older man know that it didn’t look good. Then returned her gaze to Jack, jumping back at what she saw, Ana tried to right herself. Jack was crying silent tears edged their way down his tan cheeks as he continued to try to wake the young Turner up.
“Jack?”
Jack paid her no mind and continued to gently shake Will’s body, trying to get his young lover to open his eyes. Shaking her head, Ana stepped aside abbs bbs and several of the others stepped forward and tried to take young Turner from Captain Jack.
“Captain, we’ve got to get you and Turner back to the Pearl, you both need tending too.” Gibbs spoke up.
Raising his miserable eyes, Jack nodded releasing the boy. Allowing the crewmembers to take him back to the Pearl. But as they also tried to pick him up, and do the same with him Jack broke.
“Unhand me ye dogs, I’m captain and I’ll tell you what to do not that wench over t.” J.” Jack angrily yelled pointing at Ana who stood nearby ordering the men to tie up the remaining Spanish pirates.
“I want them locked in the brig of their own ship! I also want all the bounty on board this ship brought over to the Pearl.”
A series of “Aye Aye Captain” sounded about the ship. Nodding Jack turned and headed up the plank back to the pearl, somewhat wobbly but still under his own power. Anamaria followed leaving Duncan and Cotton in charge.
***************
Back on the Pearl, Ana led Jack over to a barrel and pushed him down upon it. Cutting open his pant leg, she hissed at the nasty looking wound and proceeded to clean it up the best she could with no medical supplies. Applying pressure she barked,
“Hold this to your leg, Captain I need to go find some bandages…and don’t you dare more an inch, or your leg won’t be the only sore thing.”
Jack watched her go, in somewhat of a haze. He had no intention of moving…the pain was just to fierce at the moment, and he still had the bloody knife sticking out of his leg. As promised, Ana returned a little while later, a bowl of water balanced in her hands along with several rolls of bandages and best of all a bottle of spiced rum, which she promptly held to Jack’s lips.
Jack drank about half, before pulling away, mumbling…
”Stupid wench is trying to drown me…Captain Jack Sparrow.”
Smiling to herself, satisfied that Jack had way to much rum to quickly to still be sober, Ana moved towards the knife. Taking it tightly in her hand she pulled. Jack though drunk, screamed as the blade was pulled from his body, promptly passing out. Quickly cleaning and bandaging the wound, Ana stepped back away from Jack satisfied with her work.
Heading towards the captains cabin, Ana left Jack passed out on the deck of the pearl to go check on the lad’s process with Will. Entering the room she wasn’t at all surprised to find, five or six men holding Will to the bed, as the lad bucked trying to get away from the hands that cleaned his wound. The boy lay screaming in agony, as his wound was touch over and over again, each time stung worst than the time before. Stepping closer, Ana frowned at Gibbs, who held the cleaning rag in his hands. Raising the bottle of rum, she had only moments before fed Jack in her hand, Ana stepped closer to the bed. Placing it upon Will’s lips, she softly cooed him into drinking some. It didn’t take long before Will relaxed into a drunken state. Gibbs nodded his thanks and signaled the men to release Will, before he continued to clean and stitch the wound shut.
Jack stumbled into his cabin, just as Gibbs was tying the final stitch into place. Shooting Anamaria a glare, Jack headed towards the bed, concern edged on his face. Even in his somewhat drunken state he didn’t like the stillness of young Turner. When he was with in inches of the bed, Gibbs reached out and stopped him. Jack immediately shot him a glare, ten times worsen ten the one he had just shot Ana for leaving him passed out on the Pearl’s deck.
“Easy Cap’n… I mean no harm…just is that if you go falling on young Turner, like you look like you’re about to do…you’ll hurt the lad.”
Nodding to several of the crewmembers that still lingered in the room, Gibbs signaled them to come help Jack get settled on the bed.
Jack stiffened, when he suddenly felt several hands upon him. Lashing out, he not only managed to knock a few of the men over but he also managed to upset his own stance, sending him crashing to the ground in a heap. Howling in pain, as his injured leg took the blow. Jack promptly blacked out once again.
Settling Jack down on the bed near Will, Gibbs finished his job bandaging young Will’s back, before taking a look at Jack’s injuries. Stitching up Jack’s leg went a lot smoother then stitching up Will had gone, thanks to the captain being passed out. Bandaging the wound once again in clean bandages, Ana and Gibbs set to work, undressing, and putting Will and Jack in bed before tucking them in. Once both were sure the pair was settle, they blew out all the candles save one near the bed, and exited the room. To for see the crew and their project of bring the treasure over from the Spanish Wind.
*******************
Jack woke several hours later, just as the last of the lingering effects from the spiced rum was leaving his system. Keeping his eyes closed, Jack tried to recall what all had happened, his mind still somewhat fuzzy from the alcohol in his system. Slowly the days events popped back into his mind starting with the morning rape, young Turner had been subject too. And then the tender sex they had shared, finally settling on the attack on the Spanish Wind. Snapping his eyes open, Jack frantically looked around him for Will…the boy had been injured in the fray. But a lass the room was pitch black and Jack found that he couldn’t see anything. Reaching out blindly into the darkness, Jack searched wildly for any chance that Will was near by. Hissing in pain, Jack led led his movements, as his own injury popped into his head. Reaching downward, Jack gently probed the bandage wrapped tightly about his leg.
A small whimper sounded to his left, startling Jack out of his frantic searching.
“Will? IS that you?”
“Jack…”
Relief gripped Jack’s heart, allowing the older pirate to settle back down against the pillows he had been resting on moments before. Inching his hand towards the small whimpering voice of Will, Jack was extremely careful not to bump Will knowing the boy was undoubtedly in quite a bit of pain, judging from the sound of his voice.
“Will…angel how are you feeling?”
“Hurts…”
“Shhh I know….”
Jack’s hand settled on Will’s shoulder, rolling towards the boy, mindful of his own injury and that of the boy. Jack pulled the boy into a tight embrace.
“I thought I was going to lose you today angel…I don’t know what I’d have done if I did.”
“Jack…” Will whispered around his pain, his back felt as though it was on fire, and as if someone was beating on him with a hot poker.
“Shhh, Will I’ve got you…. it’s going to be okay…just close your eyes and try to get some rest.”
“I’ll try.”
Pulling Will closer, Jack eased a pillow under the boys side, propping him up in a more comfortable position, and hugged the boy close. With gentle hands, Jack began rubbing soothing circles across the boys back, easing him back into sleep. It indeed didn’t take long for Will under the gentle touch of Jack to be able to drop back off to sleep, curled in the tight embrace of the man he loved more then anything, Will felt safe.
Gibbs and Ana both poked their heads in, a little while later just to check on the injured men. The bounty had all been brought on board the Black Pearl, and the men had as ordered been locked in the brig on board the Spanish Wind. All they waited for now was the word from Captain Jack Sparrow on what to do with them. Smiling Ana allowed Gibbs to enter alone, and turned back out to take the helm from Mr. Cotton.
“Cap’n?” Gibbs questioned, lighting a single candle on the desk as he passed it, before nearing the bed.
“Shhh, What is it ye be wanting mate?”
“All the bounty has been brought on board cap’n…what do you wish to happen to the remaining sailors on board the ship.”
“Release the prisoners and set it a drift…give them no rations, but a single barrel of water and all the maggoty biscuits that you can find in our own galley. Savvy?”
“Aye Cap’n.” Gibbs replied before turning to leave.
“Gibbs?”
Turning back around Gibbs eyed his captain. “Yes Cap’n?”
“Bring me a bottle of rum, savvy?”
“Aye Jack. That I will.” Gibbs replied this time exiting the cabin.
As promised, Gibbs returned a few minuets later a single bottle of rum clutched in one hand, and a wooden chest clutched in the other. Settling the chest down upon Jack’s desk, Gibbs quietly opened the rum bottle before handing it to Jack.
“What’s that mate?” Jack questioned pointing towards the chest.
“I’m not sure Jack, t’was all I found inside the Captains quarters, very sparse but this one chest. We found the key around his neck. Haven’t opened it yet…thought you or the boy might like to once your feeling better.”
Nodding in reply Jack took a swig of rum. “Thanks mate.”
Setting the rum down on the bedside table, Jack leaned back on the pillows and closed his eyes, hugging Willse tse to his body once again, Jack allowed his mind to int into sleep. With all that he truly cared about nearby: Will, the Pearl, and his crew along with piles and piles of treasure.
