Chapter 11

Chapter 11

Sam pulled open the door to the van slowly, when nothing attacked her she poked her head inside. Dom was crouching by one of the walls staring at the picture.

She winced at the sight of him, if anything she had expected rage, and now, well, he just looked broken.

She stepped inside and watched as Vince and Leon scowled at her, Mia gave her a sad smile but nodded her head towards Dom.

“Dom?” Sam called softly as she stepped closer.

He looked up from where he was sitting. She watched as the sadness turned to anger and then to something more acute. Here comes the rage, she thought.

“How the fuck could you do this to me?” Dom roared as he clambered to his feet.

Sam opened her mouth to reply but he wasn’t done yet.

“It wasn’t enough for you to leave without a damn word, you took my son!” he all but screamed, Sam flinched as he took a menacing step towards her.

Out of the corner of her eye she saw Vince and Leon stand, waiting to peel Dom off of her if necessary.

“You fucking bitch!” Dom spoke with an eerily calm voice.

Sam knew it was coming, she had seen this side of him only once before and it had ended with her giving up life as she knew it and moving away from everything she had loved.

“Why?” Dom asked.

Sam tried to answer again but he shouted over her again.

“WHY?” He roared.

Something in Sam broke and she let everything from the past seven years fill her, the anger, the hate and the unbelievable loss.

“I found out I was pregnant on the day you went to prison!” she screamed back.

She watched him recoil as if smacked.

“That’s right; I found I was pregnant on the day you were sentenced for nearly beating a man to death.” Sam continued in a loud voice. She advanced on him and stopped when she was about tow paces away.

“So you tell me what the right thing to do was Dom? Should I have told you and been a single mom on welfare because we both know that my parents would have disowned me. Should I have waited until the baby was born and dragged him up to Lompoc once a month to see you?” she demanded harshly.

She could feel the tears falling down her face now, she angrily wiped them away.

“Or should I have told you, and watched you have to give up something else? Watch it tear you apart because there was nothing you could do?” Sam asked through the heaving breaths which were quickly becoming huge sobs.

Dom knew in his heart that it would have destroyed him, going to Lompoc in the first place had nearly done it, knowing that he was going to be a father and he was stuck in there would have finished him off.

He watched as Sam sunk to her knees and his heart pounded in his chest, the urge to pick her up was almost overwhelming.

Out of the corner of his eye he saw Leon and Vince huddle a sobbing Mia out of the door.

His heart won as he kneeled on the floor in front of Sam and pulled her into his arms, he sunk to the floor and pulled her onto his lap.

“I thought about writing to you while you were locked up but I couldn’t do it, I knew what it would do to you, and then I thought about contacting you when you got out but the longer I left it the harder it was.” The words seemed to fall out of her mouth and tumble into each other.

Dom listened but said nothing. Sam clung to him as she tried to make him understand that she had done what she thought was best.

They didn’t say anything more for a while; they just sat clinging to each other.

“What’s he like?” Dom finally asked and Sam crawled out of his lap. She moved to sit against the other wall and face him.

“He’s like any other six year old. He’s smart and funnier and when he smiles he looks like your dad.” Sam tapered off with a watery smile.

“Can I see him?” Dom asked softly.

Sam looked into his eyes for some sort of a sign.

“Please Sammy.” He whispered taking her hesitation for a no.

He scooted across the distance between them and cupped her face in his hand.

“Please Sam.” He almost pleaded.

Sam couldn’t help but turn her face to nuzzle into his hand. She looked at him again and nodded.

She felt the sigh rather than heard it and then his mouth was on hers.

He rubbed his lips against hers softly and it wasn’t enough for her, she raised her hands to the back of his head and tugged his mouth against hers as she pushed her tongue into his mouth.

He sensed what she needed and returned the kiss, his hands tugging her into his lap again so that she was straddling him.

She pulled frantically at his clothes and he helped her pull his top over his head.

She managed to regain enough control to pull away from him.

“You don’t have to do this.” She whispered as she ran a hand over his face.

“Ssh.” He answered and caught her mouth in a kiss.
