Ch11

Chapter Eleven: Welcome

Liljana smiled as she woke, snuggling down into the blankets. She opened her eyes to find she was the only person in the make-shift bed. “Sands… Babe?” ‘Maybe I’m getting breakfast, again.’ she thought, grinning and looked around for a note. Not finding one, she got back under the blankets and waited for Sands to come back.

Twenty minutes later, Liljana was fed up with waiting. She put her cocktail dress on and threw Sands’ shirt that he had left for her, over her shoulders and climbed down the ladder, walking out of the barn and up to the house.

Sands’ mother, Kate, greeted Liljana as she entered the kitchen through the backdoor. “Morning, Dear.”

“Hey, Kate. Have you seen Sheldon?”

“Not this morning, Dear. You should check in his room.”

Liljana nodded and climbed the stairs, “Sands?” she smiled as she opened his door, but was greeted by an empty room. “I don’t like hide and seek...” Liljana checked the wardrobe and the bathroom, even under the bed, just to be sure.

“Is he not up there?” Kate asked as Liljana came back into the kitchen.

“No.”

“I’m sure he’ll be back soon, Honey. Why don’t I get him to give you a bell when he gets in?”

“Yeah. Thanks, Kate.” She said, dejectedly.

‘What if he’s left me? What if he’s bored of me? This could be his way of telling me to ‘fu.ck off’. But... no... he wouldn’t. He took me out to the most expensive restaurant within a fifty mile radius. He wouldn’t do that and then dump me. He told me he loved me...’ Liljana felt warm as she thought back to how he whispered it against her lips, ‘He loves me. He’ll probably call me later.’

Naomi sighed, standing up from her spot on the bed and practically ripped out the phone cord from the wall.

“Hey!”

“I had no choice. You’re checking the machine every two seconds. You’ve got it baaaaaaad, Sweetie.”

“Do not.”

“Do too.”

“Do not.”

“Do too. Don’t worry about it, Lil. He’ll call.”

“Well, not now you’ve pulled the cord out!”

Naomi rolled her eyes, “Look. He said he loves you. Trust me. Everything will be fine.”

When Naomi left, Liljana plugged the phone back in but still found no messages.

The next day Liljana went to college hoping to see Sands, but he wasn’t in photography. When she got home, she called Kate, “Hey, it’s Lil.”

“Oh, hello, Dear.”

“Is Sheldon back yet?”

“No, Dear. He called early this morning.”

“Really? Where is he?”

“He’s staying with his Uncle on his farm for a month.”

“What about college?”

“That’s what I said. He just mumbled some mumbo jumbo about a job. I wouldn’t worry about him, Dear. He’s always disappearing for a few weeks. Once, he called from Greece to tell me he was visiting some friends. How he knows people across the other side of the world, God knows...”

“Don’t you get worried?”

“He’ll be fine with his Uncle.”

“Did he leave a phone number?”

“I’ve got his Uncle’s number in the book, if you want to give it a try.”

“That’d be great, thanks.” Liljana wrote down the number and dialled it as soon as she put the phone down. “Hey, is Sheldon there?”

“Who is this?”

“Uh, I’m Liljana. Sheldon’s partner.”

“My nephew hasn’t been down to see me for years! What are you doing calling me?”

“I’m sorry. He said he was staying with you. I needed to talk to him.”

“Sorry to disappoint you, Miss.”

“No, I’m... sorry for taking up your time.” Liljana put the phone down and sighed, “God damn it. Where are you Sands?” She wanted to tell Kate, but didn’t want her to start worrying.

Sands groaned as he woke; his head throbbed, his mouth was dry and his eyes felt like lead. He rolled onto his side, reaching out to wrap his arm around Liljana’s waist, but his arm flopped off the side of the bed. Which was weird, because he could have sworn they fell asleep upstairs in the barn.

He heard a groan from a few feet away and frowned as he opened his eyes slowly. There was another guy just waking up about two feet away from him. Sands’ eyes widened and he sat up, looking around. He was in a large room, with at least ten beds lined up against opposite walls. Other men were asleep or just waking up, swearing and looking around in confusion.

Sands spotted a well built man guarding the door at the far end of the room and slowly stood up. He walked up to the man, “Where am I?”

“I am not allowed to authorise that information to you.”

“Right. Well, look, I need to call my girlfriend. It’s important.”

“There is no contact with civilians, allowed.”

“I need to talk to my gir-”

“Get back to your station.” He bellowed. Sands’ jaw clenched and he kept eye contact with the guard for a moment before backing away, angrily. Some of the other men were watching him from their beds.

“What the fu.ck are you looking at?” He snarled, sitting down on the bed.

The man next to him sat up, rubbing his eyes and yawning, “Where are we, Man?”

“Fu.ck knows.” Sands retorted, watching as the man extended his hand.

“I’m Paul Tyler.”

“Sands.” He reached out and shook his hand firmly and briefly.

“Man, What the fu.ck is going on? When I went to sleep, I was with my Honey. And I wake up here.”

“Same here. The guy guarding the door won’t let me call my girl.”

“Fu.ck. I need to get out of here.”

“No sh.it.” They looked around at the other men, all now awake and sitting up. All heads turned when the door at the end of the room opened and a tall, thin, grey man in a suit came in.
