Chapter 31 - Inevitable

Everyone stared at her, sure she had gone insane, there was no longer insecurity in that stance. It oozed confidence, arrogance to the extreme, that grin and glint in her eyes like the kind described by sailors who lived through Hellion’s wrath. Barbossa stared at her in disbelief, he was threatening her child and all she was doing was oozing the exact opposite of what she should have been.

“What are you talking about?” He whispered, even Jack was staring at her as if she had lost her mind. Oria looked down with a sigh still grinning; it was time for the crunch. Her eyes met Barbossa’s from under her eyelashes and she grinned again winningly, here came the bombshell.

“You can pour all of her blood into that chest and the curse won’t be lifted… she’s not got my blood in her veins.” She smiled widely. Barbossa scowled and glanced between the pair dumbly. Barbossa turned the girl to look at him, her eyes matched Jacks’, her complexion was pale… but Oria wasn’t tanned by the sun, that was her heritage. There wasn’t an inch of colour on the girl at all; her hair was different, thinner and paler and her facial structure was no where near as exotic as Oria’s. Now that the obvious had been pointed out it was clear that the girl was no relation at all to Oria. She only passed inspection at a glance. Jack gave a disbelieving snort before seeing Oria’s most serious expression, “Did you honestly believe that I would bring something carrying my blood here to be at your mercy? You’re even more of a fool if you did. You want that curse lifting you need mine. I’m not going to give it if you hurt even a hair on her.” Jack stared at the girls’ expression, she looked as if she had been torn in two and he was beginning to feel the same. She had lied to him, she had lied to everyone.

Barbossa laughed and glanced at Jack, slowly he began to piece it together, the whole concoction of stories to create the illusion to always keep him one step away from the last drops of blood. Sara was the decoy for Oria’s blood, he would have spent years trying to find her child then when it didn’t work he’d have lost the trail. He chuckled again at Jacks’ hang dog expression and the cleverness of the girl; Jack was avoiding looking at Oria focusing on the coins in the chest. Barbossa turned his attention back to Oria with a knowing grin.

“Clever girl. Very clever girl, good decoy I am impressed. Like I said before, as treacherous as a snake, no cost to dear is it? What might be your terms?” Now Jack met her gaze but she avoided his, this was between her and Barbossa.

“Sara leaves here unharmed and I will give my blood willingly.” Barbossa nodded and motioned for the pirates holding her to free her. Oria watched silently as the manacles and ropes fell from her wrists and met the girls gaze. Sara wouldn’t meet her eyes and neither would Jack; they would come to understand with time, she was sure. Doubt had never been one of her strong points.

“Very well, we have an accord.” Oria stepped up to the chest her eyes still on Barbossa’s. He looked pleased at her trickery and held out the golden dagger respectfully as the gold medallion was pressed into her palm. Oria glanced down at the laughing skull and stared at it for a few moments it looked as if it was ridiculing her. She slashed her palm deeply and let the blood drip onto the medallion before dropping it into the chest with the rest. The pirates released Sara at Barbossa’s nod, “I always knew you were one of us. You can’t be backed into a corner can you? You’ll always twist your way free. No attachments to anyone, that’s the key isn’t it, survival of the fittest and no prisoners.” Oria ignored him and turned to Sara but she shook her head and ran into the caves to hide her tears. Oria sighed and nodded before turning back, the point was that Sara was safe; in time she would learn that Oria had been right to do what she had done. Even if the original plan had been her death the girl never needed to know that.

Jack stepped forwards glaring at Oria as Barbossa moved to cut Wills’ palm instead but then remembered about the Dauntless. He turned to Jack who was smiling faintly again, his mind was reeling but he needed to keep to his own plan.

“Wait to lift the curse until the opportune moment. For instance…” He plunged his hand into the golden coins and scooped several up, “After you’ve killed Norringtons’ men.” He fumbled slightly with the coins, “Every… last… one…” He dropped a coin back into the chest with each word to emphasise it, Will watched as the fourth coin disappeared up Jacks’ sleeve. The crew were jeering with glee.

“You’ve been planning this from the beginning. Ever since you learned my name.” Jack glanced at him consideringly before smiling and nodding. Well Oria wasn’t the only one who planned, and he had learned from the best even if that had only just become evident in a cruel way.

“Yeah.” Barbossa pushed the boy aside.

“I want fifty per cent of your plunder.” Jack scowled at him.

“Fifteen.”

“Forty.”

“Twenty-five and I’ll buy you a hat, a really big one. Commodore.” Barbossa glanced up at his own rather weathered one before grinning as he met Jacks’ eyes.

“We have an accord.” They both extended their hands and shook heartily, Jack turned with a grin to the pirates.

“All hands to the boats!” He paused as he felt Barbossas’ gaze on his back, he gave an impish smile and placed his hands together in apology, “Apologies, you give the orders.” Barbossa raised an eyebrow before returning his sight to the pirates.

“Gents… take a walk.” The pirates chuckled merrily and turned towards the entrance to the caves with barely muffled cackles of glee. Oria watched them suspiciously but spotted Sara duck out of their way and stand down an abandoned crevice tear tracks down her cheeks. It hurt but not as much as if the girl had been killed. She had gotten too close to the little spark, that had most definitely not been part of the plan but then she had never been meant to go this far with them.

“Not to the boats?” He glanced back at Oria who shook her head; Jack sighed and walked down to study the treasure littered about the cave carelessly. His gaze flickering towards Sara every now and again ensuring she was still alright. Barbossa glanced at Oria realising that the issue of which ship she served on had been overlooked.

“Tell me Jack, which ship is our mutual friend going to sailing on?” Jack paused and glanced over his shoulder.

“I thought we should let the Lady choose. Either way, she’s yours and under your control.” Oria opened her mouth ready to protest at Jack’s comment as Barbossa chuckled.

“Aye let the Lady choose, either way I’ve got a De Monara running under me.” She growled at this and folded her arms angrily while glaring at Jacks’ back.

“I’m not too inclined to either of you at the minute. I’m not a bloody sword to be passed around you know!” Jack pouted at her sarcastically before tossing a crown with a dent in over his shoulder. He wasn’t about to completely abandon her, after all he couldn’t fight instinct and he needed explanations. She stalked around to Will and leaned back against the chest before her eyes fell on a sword behind him.

“Stay still.” He frowned at her as she pretended to drop to the ground in a sulk and began to crawl behind him to the sword.

:/

Jack tossed a golden statue of some Asian god over his shoulder disrespectfully and tucked another set of jewels into his various pockets. Barbossa was watching him carefully sift through the treasure.

“I must admit Jack, I thought I had you figured. But it turns out you’re a hard man to predict.” Jack grinned at his reflection in a crown.

“Me? I’m dishonest. And a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly. It’s the honest ones you want to watch out for, because you can never predict when they’re going to do something incredibly… stupid.” He drew a sword from a pirates’ sheath before kicking him in the backside sending him face first into the water, he tossed the sword quickly to Will. Will cut his bonds and watched as Barbossa charged after Jack his only intention on mauling him beyond recognition.

Oria realising Will was released and with a sword picked up the one she had been crawling towards and tested its’ flexibility, satisfied that it was good enough she headed after Barbossa and Jack who were in the middle of a duel. Jack knocked Barbossa backwards into the wall of the cave, Barbossa grinned at him.

“You’re off the edge of the map mate, here there be monsters.” Oria leapt up behind Barbossa as he stepped away form the wall and sank her blade into his back. He cried out in shock.

“Wrong… here, there be demons.” Oria snarled over his shoulder, Barbossa turned to stare at her as Jack lunged at his chest and missed skewering him by millimetres. Pulling Oria’s sword free and tossing it back to her swiftly. She caught it one handed and ducked Barbossa’s violent swing, Jack mimicking the duck, they lunged simultaneously. Barbossa blocked Oria’s and let Jack’s sword bite into his thigh, his hand grasped Oria’s arm as she stumbled on a heap of coins that slid under her foot. Barbossa glared at her accusingly.

“Same thing in your case after all what demon isn’t also a monster?” Barbossa whispered and pushed her back violently, Oria stumbled backwards only a step but it was enough as her heel caught on the rough edge of the side of the slope. She fell backwards through the hole and rolled down the heaps of treasure back down to ground level. Shaking herself slightly she blocked on instinct as the Bo’Sun attempted to split her skull, her eyes wide in surprise.

:/

Jack followed Barbossa up a steep slope parrying and attempting valiantly to land a blow; Barbossa seemed to get bored and stopped pressing Jack up the slope. Jack paused to regard him before lunging forwards he knocked Barbossas’ sword away and watched as his sword buried itself deep into Barbossa’s chest. He stared in disbelief when Barbossa merely sighed as if bored of telling a child the same thing for the past hour or so.

“You can’t beat me Jack.” Jack stepped away with a frown, he had been sure stabbing him through the heart would have worked to at least make Barbossa falter. Barbossa swiftly drew Jacks’ sword from his chest and plunged it into Jacks’. Oria glanced up as this happened hearing Jacks’ choke and froze in disbelief as he staggered backwards; Bo’Sun slammed his sword into her arm drawing her attention back to the task at hand. She cursed and pranced away glancing down at the wound, a deep slash across her upper left arm, she continued to prance around him her gaze flickering between Jack and the Bo’Sun till Jack stepped back into the moonlight. She stopped again as did Will and their pirate partners to stare. Jack glanced down at himself, his skeletal structure clearly on display with shreds of material dangling off him.

“That’s interesting.” Barbossa shook his head in disbelief, as Jack grinned and rolled a golden medallion between his fingertips, “I couldn’t resist mate.” Oria gave a sigh of relief and swung her blade at Bo’Sun now assured Jack wasn’t going to get himself killed. She caught the man off guard and he gave a pained scream as her sword sliced through his thigh, he fell to the floor.

Barbossa and Jack parried and lunged back down the slope; Jack turned suddenly and ran down it past him. His hip collided with a table laden heavily with gold and silver, it toppled over, “Sorry!” Jack shouted back as Barbossa tripped over the table and almost ended up sprawled on his face. On reaching level ground the battle commenced, blows exchanged and parries clanging till Jack knocked Barbossa back winded against a stone.

“So what now Jack Sparrow? Will it be two immortals locked in an epic battle until Judgement Day and trumpets sound? Hmm?” Jack grinned and shrugged.

“Or you could surrender.” Barbossa snarled at him and leapt up angrily, Jack turned tail and headed for more open level ground. Barbossa laughed and followed him down, matching him blow for blow and step for step.

:/

Oria dodged the Bo’Sun’s swing as he struggled upright. She spread her arms arrogantly with a grin and stood facing him cockily.

“Come on Bo’Sun, can’t you even keep up with a little girl?” He glared at her and charged angrily. She dodged at the last minute with a laugh and skewered him through the back. He tugged himself free of the sword and smacked her across the face harshly. She fell backwards at the sharp angle of the strike and lost her sword to the water as she fell sprawled to the floor. Oria scuttled backwards as Bo’Sun’s sword clattered down in between her legs and again barely missing her right thigh. Her back pressed up against the wall and she glanced about for anything with which to protect herself. Bo’Sun laughed and lifted his sword over his head with a triumphant grin, he was going to see her skull split if it was the last thing he did. Oria’s eyes widened slightly as she realised there was nothing at all to help her stop the inevitable.
