Chapter 10 – Wreckage

Oria glanced up at the kafuffle further down the deck and brushed the crustaceans aside furiously, she drew her blade on instinct and caught the one that sang through the air barely missing her ear. Will froze as he stared at her their blades crossed millimetres from her cheek, she didn’t even pause before pushing against his blade hard sending him stumbling backwards. Her hand clasped his collar and she pressed the cutlass to his throat, “Get on your knees boy.” The snarl echoing in her tone as the crustacean crew around them chuckled, Will dropped his sword instantly and knelt in front of her. Oria stepped away letting her crew take Will into line with the others awaiting Jones appraisal.

Her gaze shifted to the side at a glint of reflecting light and latched onto Jack who swiftly lowered the spy glass. Jones brushed past her and surveyed the group of miserable half drowned wretches. He nodded to one of the men who was murmuring his prayers over an oiled rosary. Oria stepped forwards without question knowing what Jones wanted doing, drew the sharpened cutlass smoothly and wrapped her fingers in the man’s hair forcing his head back. He stared at her terrified before her blade sliced cleanly through his throat and the crew tossed his body over-board with a cheer. Jones nodded in approval before continuing to torture the crew.

Will stared at her dumbly, he had seen her kill before but not so heartlessly and not because someone else had wanted it done. Why was he doing this to help Jack get back this devil? He didn’t understand what the pirate saw in her, all he saw was a callous twisted little bitch ready to sign over any man’s life for any small favour. Jones stepped in front of him and Will froze, “You are neither dead nor dying.”

The deadly whisper crept over the air and silence ruled for what felt like an eternity before Will mustered the courage… or stupidity to speak, “Jack Sparrow sent me to settle his debt.” Jones paused and blinked several times. Oria stood slightly straighter studying the boy curiously, had Jack somehow managed to see her plan and was now attempting to remove himself from the equation? She stepped closer her curiosity aroused.

“What is your purpose here?” Will glanced up at the quieter almost disbelieving tone of the half-sea half-man being in front of him.

“Jack Sparrow… sent me to settle his debt.” Jones glanced back at Oria and was somewhat amused by her apparent disorientation at the comment.

“Did he now? I’m sorely tempted to accept that offer.” He reached out and grasped Oria’s arm before glancing back to where Jack was stood. Jack swiftly lowered his spy glass once more.

Jack gave a yelp of fright as Jones appeared barely a foot in front of him with Oria at his side, he released her arm sharply and stepped towards him. Jack stumbled back several steps before pausing at the petrified squeaks of the crew as Jones’ crew quickly took them hostage.

:/

“One soul is not equal to another.” Jones whispered as Jack stumbled in his explanation, argument… hell he didn’t have a clue what he was saying. His mouth was on auto-pilot, his hands were taking paths he wasn’t aware of in conjunction with his mouth’s drunken guidance and he was beginning to think his body was betraying him. Finally he gained control of the mad rampage of randomness and assigned more specific tasks to himself.

“Aha! So we've established my proposal is sound in principle, now we're haggling over price.” Jack shouted triumphantly, more proud of the fact he had actually said what he wanted to say than it being intelligent. Jones raised an eyebrow and glanced back at Oria who was still stood motionless not quite sure what to make of the scenario unfolding in front of her.

“You’ve been telling him things you shouldn’t have been.” Oria held his gaze with a tilted chin.

“I’ve told him nothing about this. He must have gotten the information from elsewhere.” Jones turned back to study Jack and came to a quick decision.

“Ninety-nine souls, three days-uh!” He nodded to Oria, she stepped forward and once again tugged the sleeve up Jack’s arm, her fingers ran over the tattoo soothingly.

“What are you playing at?” She whispered as the tattoo slowly faded away, Jack met her gaze.

“Have some faith.” He whispered back. Jones was watching the whispered exchange curiously his gaze following Oria as she stepped away. Something was different about her, there was no malice in her when this man was around.

“How much do you know about Oria?” Jones continued watching Oria, gauging her reactions nothing changed, she was as neutral as ever. He turned to Jack when he didn’t respond, “Do you believe that she really cares about you?” Jack’s eyes narrowed slightly as Jones continued regardless, “You are the… third man she has succeeded in generating genuine love in. The first she killed within four days, the second is now in my crew still entirely obsessed, how Jack Sparrow are you going to fit into the rest of her equation?” Jack glanced at Oria.

“You are the only one she has not told about my heart.” Jones continued watching carefully for the slightest hint that actually she had. He caught the glint in Jack’s eye as his attention was rapidly drawn back to Jones, “Clearly she has given that obsession up or you would have been well on your way to recovering it.” Jack kept his mouth shut, he wasn’t sure what Jones was getting at, wasn’t sure if maybe he had misread something somewhere along the way. Jones chuckled and the crew disappeared as suddenly as they had appeared from the deck of the Black Pearl.
