Chapter 10

Jack could scarcely believe four days ago he had believed himself to be the luckiest man alive. Why was it nothing ever seemed to go right? It had been three days since that fateful night; that one night that changed everything. Since then, Jack had been taking one day at a time. He hadn't told her her life story yet, he was hoping against hope her memory would come back on its own. On the first few days Lizzie had stayed restricted in the cabin, too hysterical and confused to leave, asking many questions about where she was and who Jack was. It broke his heart. How do you explain to somebody that you're dating them when they only just know your name? Four days ago he'd been so close to fucking her No! Not fucking her, making love. Fucking is for whores, Lizzie was definitely not a Tortuga wench and now he could do nothing except hug her. He did his best to explain to her she was on a pirate ship, of her own free will, but she asked many questions and it hurt. It hurt alot. He couldn't believe that she had lost all their memories together; him saving her life for the first time, the marooning together, her learning him the pirate song and the two of them singing arm in arm around the fire, the flirtatious moments together. She didn't remember their first kiss, his death and rescue, their time together in Tortuga. Nothing. She didn't remember a thing. Jack had never felt so many emotions in one go; he had always believed himself to have the emotional range of a teaspoon. But in the last couple of days he'd gone from feeling annoyed, to scared, shock, fear, guilt, frustration, anger. He felt guilty; this was all his fault, he should have stopped Lizzie leaving the cabin somehow, someway...he could have tried harder. Then he'd felt angry; why hadn't she just stayed in the cabin and slept? Why did she have to be so stubborn and come out? But then then she had only been coming out to check on Jack, wanted to know he was okay. None of this was her fault, she was only scared for Jack. He, being stubborn, had refused to stay in during the storm, had wanted to steer the Pearl to safety, and the now familiar ache of guilt struck him over and over. He was angry and frustrated that her memory had not returned after two or three days of anxious waiting and wondered if it would ever come back. He leaned his head on the map on the table and closed his eyes for a few seconds, willing himself to keep calm.

She reached the cave using the rowboat, and the scene before her rooted her to the spot; pirates. Atleast 20 of them brandishing swords and pistols. Dead pirates. You could see their bones and their gaunt eye sockets. Their clothes were shredded and they clung to their bones loosely. One skeleton in particular caught her attention; he wore a red bandana and had several dreadlocks and beads in his hair along with a sash tied around his tiny waist. He was fighting another one of the skeletal pirates fiercely. She had no time to think before one of the rotting skeletons came towards her, swinging a sword in her direction.

Lizzie woke up screaming hysterically, entangling herself between the many sheets on the bed. Jack jumped up from his spot at the table and ran to the bed. She was very red and covered in sweat. Her eyes were streaming and her breathe was uneven. Jack climbed onto the bed and shook her gently, trying to get her attention.

'Lizzie? Lizzie!' She finally looked at him, stopped screaming, and immediately jumped into his arms and began sobbing uncontrollably. Jack patted her head slightly and closed his eyes.

"It was just a dream Lizzie, just a silly dream." She was stilling crying loudly and he wondered what had caused her to be this upset. For a few moments they clung together and slowly she began to regain some sense. She sat up and wiped her red and puffy eyes, ridding herself of the tears clinging to her long eyelashes.

"Yes" she said breathlessly "Just a silly dream..."

"Do you want to talk about it?" Jack asked tentatively, trying to be friendly.

"No, I'd rather not think about it anymore."

"Come on, lets get you back to sleep." He sat behind her, and she leaned against his chest, trying to get comfortable. She closed her eyes warily, but was scared. She had never had a dream like that before, it had been so real. She felt as though she had been there before, and that pirate, the one with the sash. He seemed so farmiliar. Slowly, she began falling asleep again, muttering slightly to herself. Jack caught the word 'skeletons' and he began to frown. What had she been dreaming?

Jack woke up the next day, and found the bed empty. He instantly began to worry, where had she gone? He quickly got up, shoved his boots on and ran out the cabin door. He didn't have to look very far; up in the crow's nest Mr. Gibbs was steering the wheel, and leaning against the railing was Lizzie. The two looked like they were having a nice conversation due to the fact that Elizabeth was smiling; the first genuine smile in days. He felt warm inside, he always loved her radiant smile. It seemed to light up the place like a flashlight, and he didn't know anyone with a more beautiful smile than his Lizzie. He climbed up to the crow's nest and Gibbs greeted him cheerfully.

"Morning Cap'n. Sleep well?"

"Very well, thanks mate" He said, nodding slightly at the older man.

"Morning Jack" Lizzie spoke, smiling lightly at him. He felt his insides turn to mush, that sweet voice and entracing smile of hers were going to be the death of him...again.

"Morning luv, Are you okay?"

"Quite well thankyou. Mr Gibbs here took me round the whole ship, introducing me to the whole crew. They seem like a friendly bunch, well most of them anyway." Jack looked nervously at Gibbs, who seemed to be avoiding eye contact. He'd obviously informed the crew of what had happened to Lizzie.

'Well m'lady, if you're not doing anything right now I was wondering if you'd fancy a walk round the ship with me?" Her eyes sparkled beautifully; she had already walked round the ship once this morning but she loved it. She felt a strange connection to it that she couldn't explain, even to herself. How can I feel so connected to a ship I've only been round once? She nodded at Jack who gestured for her to climb down the steps. She bid goodbye to Mr. Gibbs and proceeded to walk with Jack, arm in arm. She looked happy, Jack thought, but he had the slightly feeling something, or someone, was on her mind...
