Epilogue

Epilogue

Erik stared at the sheet music for what seemed like hours. Why wouldn’t this melody come to him? He sighed and threw down the quill, leaning back in his chair. He ran his fingers through his long brown hair as he closed his eyes. This opera was supposed to have been finished a week ago. But the ending aria wasn’t what he wanted after all; so he sat down to write another one. Suddenly he heard a noise and he turned to look over his shoulder.

A pair of identical green eyes peered out at him from behind the corner of the sofa. He turned around fully and peered in the direction of the sofa in his office. A light airy giggle erupted in the air as he got up and walked towards the sofa. “Now who would dare interrupt the creative process of the dreaded Opera Ghost?” He spoke in a low deep tone.

Another giggle went up from behind the couch as a six-year-old child bolted from behind the couch and flew towards him. Dark curls trailed down the little girl’s back as she was clothed in a white flannel nightgown. Erik looked down at his daughter with a proud smile on his face. He lifted her up in his strong arms, cradling her against his chest. “It’s me Papa!” The little girl giggled as she wrapped her arms around his neck, hugging him.

Erik chuckled as he kissed his daughter’s cheek. She had his wife’s fine features, and despite his original fears, a flawless beautiful face. He stared into his own eyes as he rocked her against him. “It is past your bedtime, mon petit amour.” He stroked back her curls.

“Angelica! Where are you?” Christine’s voice called out from the hallway.

Angelica buried her head in Erik’s chest as she hugged him tightly. “Don’t wanna go to sleep.”

He smiled as he kissed her head. “Your mother is looking for you.”

Christine walked into the office. She looked tired, her belly swollen with their second unborn child. Her dark hair was loose around her shoulders, dressed in a lilac dressing gown. As soon as she saw father and daughter, her eyes narrowed. “Just what are you doing, young lady?”

Angelica giggled as she turned her head towards her mother. “I want Papa to sing to me.”

Christine lost her frown as she started smiling. “I remember nights when I couldn’t sleep without the sound of your father’s voice.” Her eyes met Erik’s over their daughter’s head. “He used to sing me to sleep too.”

Walking over to his wife, Erik kissed her softly. “I’ll put our angel to sleep. Rest yourself. I want you to take care of yourself.”

Just as she was going to speak, the bump in her belly kicked, causing Christine to wince. She ran her hands over her stomach. “He’s been kicking all day.”

“He?” Erik’s eyes filled with amusement. “So sure of yourself, mon ange.”

“It’s destiny.” Christine whispered as she put a hand on Erik’s chest.

Erik felt his heart began to race as he gazed at his wife. “I shall go put our daughter to sleep and then I will be back. Then I will sing you to sleep.” He stroked her cheek.

Staring at his wife, Erik felt a lump in his throat. Never would he guess his life would have turned out like this. It scared him a bit, as if he was waiting for something to happen to take it all away. Yet Christine was there to remind him that he would always have her and their children. It had been six years now and the Opera Populaire was thriving. He wrote the operas and his dear wife was the leading star. It felt almost strange to him to have such a normal life.

“So tired, Papa.” Angelica murmured as she yawned.

Christine kissed the top of her daughter’s head. “Goodnight my love. Sweet dreams.”

“Night Momma.” The young girl yawned again.

“Come angel, Papa will sing to you. I will protect you from nightmares.” Erik began to carry his daughter up the stairs to her bedroom. “When the Phantom of the Opera makes a promise, he swears to it. I will protect you. The music of the night shall continue.”
