Chapter 12 – The Treasure

Jack cupped his hands to his mouth and hollered. "Excuse me, but were you speaking to us?"

The ground trembled again, the rumbling sound deafening; harder than the last time, but both men expected it and kept their footing. They could barely make out words among the noise. "Why have you disturbed my slumber?"

Jack and Will's eyes grew wide. Jack decided to be careful with his next question. "Apologies for that. Are you, then, the very great, handsome, stone dragon whose throat we have just managed to walk down?"

"Yes. Why have you come to me?"

Will squeaked and his eyes grew even bigger, but for once he kept his mouth shut.

Jack didn't look too surprised. "We were told that there was an item here that allowed the dead to speak to the living. We were NOT told, however, that the item had an owner."

"I am the guardian of many artifacts. The item you seek is dangerous to the living. Many men have been killed for their crimes. You would give them the opportunity to commit more of those crimes with impunity. You may not have it."

"We were also told of a cat statue that could bestow life upon the dead."

"The cat has been given to me for safe-keeping, and I would give it to you only for use on the most worthy of men, for it will work but once, then be lost forever. Do you have such a man aboard your ship? I see many dead, but most are of a violent nature, and I shall not allow the cat used on them."

Jack let out a deep breath; Will held his. "There is but one man on my ship who deserves the benefit you offer. He was killed by accident when the powder magazine on his ship exploded. When we traveled through the area of darkness, of the dead, he shown out as very close to pure of soul."

"And you, whose soul is tarnished so badly would use the cat to give him life rather than save the cat for yourself?" The voice sounded more than a bit skeptical.

Jack shrugged. "I don't know yet whether I'm alive or dead, but he deserves it far more than I do." Jack couldn't help but be honest with the dragon; he felt that to lie to the dragon would damn him eternally, if he wasn't already.

"You are not dead or I would have eaten you lest you attempt to steal any of my charges. But you are in danger of moving from body to spirit directly, and once you are gone, not even the cat can save you." The hot wind picked up, carrying a small item on its current to land in Jack's hands. It was the cat. "There is a saying in the lands of men. 'Handsome is as handsome does'. Do not forget it." The wind went back to the soft breeze it had been before, and the earth stopped moving.

"I believe our audience is over, young William. Let's go." They made their way out of the cave and Jack climbed on top of the cave entrance to stand on the dragon's snout and look it in the eye. He bowed low, hands together in a prayer-like position. "Thank you." At the snort of smoke, he quickly made his way down to Will, and they hiked back to the boat, climbed in and cast off.

Jack sat on a barrel on the main deck, watching Will make the announcement to the crew. He didn't know what the reaction would be, but he was sure it wouldn't be pretty.

"I'm sorry, men...Anamaria. We couldn't get the treasure we were after." The mumbling started low, and got a bit louder, but there was nothing Will could quite make out in words. "If anyone wants to go and find the treasure, they are welcome to try. But I must warn you; the island looks like a dragon with good reason. It IS a dragon, and we were lucky to escape with our lives. Any questions?"

The living had none; if Will Turner said it, it had to be true. The dead, on the other hand, surrounded Jack. Bill made his way through the crowd to the pirate captain. "Jack, you've let us down."

"You weren't there, mate. The so-called cave you sent us into was the dragon's gullet. And I doubt even you could blame me for not wantin' to argue with a dragon...particularly when you're standin' on 'is tongue."

"Jack, the dragon couldn't have hurt you."

"He could have, but more, he could have killed young William, and ye know I'll not take that chance."

"But the cat—"

"—only works but once, then disappears forever. Speaking of which..." Jack looked around. The living crew were preparing to set sail. Sitting on the rail at the bow of the ship was Norrington, staring out at the island almost as if he were in a trance. "Excuse me, mates. I've a promise to keep." He strode to the steps and climbed up to the bow. Sitting down next to the younger man, he pulled the cat statue out of his coat pocket as Will walked up.

Norrington came out of his reverie and looked at Jack. "The island is as beautiful as it is eerie."

Jack smiled gently. "And as wise as it is beautiful."

"I beg your pardon?"

"It's alive, mate. He's a real dragon. And he gave me a present for you."

"For me? Why?"

"Because you are the only spirit on this ship worthy enough to be given another chance at life."

"But you—"

"—Don't deserve it, Commodore. It's for you and you alone."

All of a sudden, Will finally remembered what the hag had said. /Destroy a treasure utterly, or your love will be lost to you./ He knew what it meant now; that HAD to be it!

Jack reached out with the statue, and Will knew THIS was the opportune moment. "Commodore! Grab the bird trinket in Jack's hair! Quickly!" He could only hope that James knew what he meant and could follow through before Jack could touch him with the cat.

Norrington appeared before Will, sitting on the rail, the bird trinket in his hand, still attached to Jack's hair. Will drew his dagger and cut the braid off, grabbing Norrington's hand and heaving the trinket as far as he could out into the water. As Jack appeared, solid again, the entire crew stared in the direction of the island. It was gone, with barely a ripple moving away from its previous location to even hint that it had ever existed. But when the trinket hit the water, a fountain erupted into a very live-looking dragon, who swallowed the trinket in a quick gulp and bowed. "THANK YOU." And it was gone.
