Twelvpan pan style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Night Time and Market Day
That night,
Jack had another dream about his time on Athena’s
Jewel. In this
dream, Chasity had a wooden stick, and was beating him with it, and kicking him
with her boots on. That accounted for
all his bruises.

When Jack awoke,
Melora was kneeling beside him once again.
“Another bad
dream?” she asked.
Jack nodded.
“Are you
going to tell me about this one?” Melora asked.
Jack shook
his head.
“Would you
like some hot milk?” she asked.
< sty style='font-size:18.0pt;font-family:"Arial Narrow"'>
Again, Jack
nodded.
“I’ll be back,”
Melora said, leaving for the kitchen house.

As Melora was
passing the sitting room, she saw Bernard sitting in a chair, gazing at the
sea.
“What are you
doing up?” she asked.
“Thinking about
the questions of the universe,” Bernard replied, “what are you doing up?”
“I’m going to
make hot milk for Jack. He keeps having
bad dreams, and this seems to help for the rest of the night,” said Melora.
“Mam used to
do that before she died,” Bernard thoughtfully told Melora.
“Da, too
after she died. I learned it from
him. It works for me, so I started
making it for Jack,” replied Melora.
**
The next day
was the day that Melora went to town.
“Do you want
to come to town with me, Jack?” asked Melora at breakfast.
Jack nodded.
“After
breakfast, we need to prepare to leave,” Melora said.
Jack nodded.
“Since Jack
is going to town, you don’t need me, do you?” asked Bernard.
“I won’t be
needing you, Bernie,” replied Melora, “Will you come, Bonnie?”
“Not if style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>he’s going,” said Bonita, pointing at
Jack.
**
Melora came
into Jack’s room, carrying a blue ribbon, and a small wooden box.
“You need to
remove your scarf, Jack,” she said, “we don’t want to soldiers in Grover’s Corners
to know you’re a pirate, so I’ll put in this box until you leave us for good.”
Jack took off
his red bandana and Melora folded it and set it in the box.
“Sit on the
bed, Jack,” Melora said, patting a spot on the bed,” I need to take that bone,
trinkets, and beads out of your hair.”
Jack
obediently sat on the bed and Melora spent the next twenty minutes tg oug out
Jack’s hair ornaments and put them in the box.
Then, using the ribbon, she pulled Jack’s hair in a queue.
“All done,”
she said.
Jack walked
over to the mirror to see himself.
“You look
very nice, Jack,” said Melora.
Taking the
box with her, she left the room. After
Melora left, Bernard walked past Jack’s room.
“Very spiffy,
Jack,” commented Bernard, “let’s go.”
(A/N: I’m
not sure they used ‘spiffy’ back then, but oh well.)

When Bonita
came into the sitting room, and saw Jack, Melora, and Bernard sitting on the
settee, she said, “Trying to make him look respectable?”
“Pretty
much,” answered Bernard.
“Keep a close
eye on him, Melora,” said Bonita, “he’s a pirate, you know.”
Then, she
left for a walk.
