Chapter 32 - Sacrifices

A small form streaked out in front of her with a screech and with an instinct that had grown incredibly strong over the past few weeks, Oria pushed Sara aside as the blade fell towards them. The sharp bite of metal into her side drew a pained cry she couldn’t suppress as the Bo’Sun pulled the bloodied sword back out violently. He stared down at her with a snarl as she clutched at her side in agony.

“What girl could ever be anything but a useless piece of flesh?” He stormed away satisfied that Oria wouldn’t be moving for a while. Oria glanced down at Sara who looked at the bloody wound with wide eyes. Oria gave her a gentle smile and brushed her fingers down her cheek, Sara clasped them tightly. Oria swallowed as the pain began to increase as her body struggled to heal the ragged wound.

“I need you to do something for me, for old times’ sake all right kid?” The girl nodded, her eyes locked onto the bloody mess. She might have lied to her since the day she was born but Oria was still the closest thing she had to a mother.

:/

Jack and Barbossa headed up the golden mound their cutlasses clashing, glancing about Jack spotted Will stood over the chest ready to slash his palm. Smacking Barbossa heavily across the head Jack quickly slashed his own palm and soaked the medallion in his blood. Tossing it over his head he drew his pistol as Barbossa drew his and aimed at Elizabeth who froze half-way across the water. There was a moment of silence when everyone weighed everything up before a pistol shot went off, Elizabeth gave a gasp expecting to feel the kiss of lead through her heart. Instead the bullet went through Barbossa’s chest from Jack’s pistol. They stared at each other silently.

“Ten years you carry that pistol and now you waste your shot.” Barbossa laughed with some amusement as he regarded the situation.

“He didn’t waste it.” Will opened his palm when Barbossa’s attention was on him and they watched as two bloodied medallions fell into the chest. Barbossa stared with a slight grin before realising something was wrong, he dropped his sword and peeled back his jacket disbelievingly. Blood was beginning to seep out from the wound.

“I feel… cold.” He gave a half-smile and fell back dead as a green apple fell from his fingertips.

Elizabeth ran up to check on Will and Jack gave a half-smile before an agonised scream came from behind them in the various twisting corridors. A few seconds later Oria emerged with a grin one hand holding her bloody side the other a blood stained sword but looking otherwise none the worse for wear. She stumbled slightly as her vision flared but recovered quickly, she wasn’t into the business of showing weakness. Especially not now when she was sure by Jack’s look he would soon be baying for her blood just like everyone else.

“Ah, everyone’s still alive, how reassuring.” Oria whispered in the silence, the words echoing around the silent cavern as they all stared at her coldly, she merely tilted her chin and took the silent criticism. Will glared at her still holding Elizabeth tightly. Oria’s attention was drawn to Barbossa and she looked down at him quietly, as if considering something. Jack rested a hand on her shoulder for a few seconds before heading down to the piles of treasure behind them. He had gotten revenge for their child and she had punished him for not doing it soon in his opinion. Oria watched him but he still wouldn’t meet her gaze, he wasn’t ready to face that yet, he needed time to think. Elizabeth extracted herself from Will’s grasp and smiled with embarrassment.

“We should return to the Dauntless.” Will avoided her gaze and nodded.

“Your fiancé will be wanting to know you are safe.” Elizabeth looked disappointed and turned away walking quickly back to the boats. Jack swaggered up to them with crowns and jewels decking him out like a Christmas tree.

“If you were waiting for the opportune moment… that was it.” Jack smiled slightly before heading towards Oria who hadn’t moved, “Now if you’d be so kind, we’d be much obliged if you’d drop us off at my ship.” He placed a hand on Oria’s shoulder again and squeezed harshly; she glanced at him and nodded she could see the barely concealed flurry of emotions behind his gaze. She had the distinct feeling Jack was going to demand answers instantly. Her gaze met Wills’ and she gave him a soft smile of encouragement which he met with an ice cold regard as they headed towards the row boats and Elizabeth who was stood holding Sara’s hand. Sara avoided Oria’s gaze and scrambled into the boat to sit between Will and Elizabeth.

:/

Elizabeth watched Jack steadily, he was sat calmly, and his gaze was fixed on his hands which were cluttered with ornately crafted rings and bracelets. He looked so pathetic like a lost puppy; he had heard a lot in the past hour or so and obviously he was beginning to take things to heart.

“I’m sorry Jack.” Elizabeth whispered, he shrugged absently. Nice of the girl to apologise but it wasn’t her fault. He couldn’t lay blame with her.

“They’ve done what’s right by them. Can’t expect more than that.” Oria watched the Dauntless get closer and closer and glanced at Jack. To say he was disappointed was an understatement; he looked as if he had just been gutted and hung out to dry with the seagulls.

Her fingers crept over his and entwined them carefully almost warily; a faint smile lit his features at the firm grip, it was still a comfort. He couldn’t seem to do anything right where Oria was concerned, failed as a father, a Captain, a pirate, let her be captured by Barbossa, not once, twice but three times, captured by another pirate during the first year of her appearance not to mention all the tricky situations they had been in throughout the years. Granted she may have turned the tables on him this time… that response would just have to be decided with time, it was going to require a lot of thought.

But… he had seen something no one else had, he had seen how Oria looked at Sara, just like between him and her there was something deeper, he had seen something akin to that between Sara and Oria. Perhaps that had all been act too, perhaps she really wasn’t reliable, and perhaps everything really was just a ploy.

The row boat bumped against the side of the Dauntless and a ladder was lowered. Elizabeth went up it first followed by Sara and Oria and eventually Jack and Will, Oria was already pinned against the railing with two sailors’ swords at her throat and another four with their pistols primed and aimed at her heart.

“Wonderful greeting party. Extremely friendly, Commodore must commend you on their manners.” James regarded her coldly before having both her and Jack thrown into separate cells in the brig. Elizabeth holding Sara’s hand tightly as Will rested a hand on the girls’ head comfortingly and smiled down at her. Sara smiled back faintly. He felt sorry for her, just another tool in the cruel witch’s plans; he knelt in front of her.

“How would you like to come and live with me at the blacksmith’s shop?” The girls’ eyes lit up brightly and she hugged him tightly. Oria glanced back at the comment and met Will’s eyes; he glared at her and tightened his grip protectively on the young girl. She gritted her teeth, she had asked for this, she deserved this and the anger and hurt she felt was unrealistic. She turned back and allowed the guards to push her the rest of the way to the brig without a backwards glance. Too deep, she had gotten too deep.
