Chapter 13: War Stories

Everyone regrouped at the house and Eva parked her car outside but stood in her car thinking about her brother and Mike.
She loved her brother but she always ended up getting in trouble when he was around. And Mike, she actually loved him once, everyone called them Bonnie & Clyde but it was over now. She put her head down on the steering wheel, her head had begun throbbing Her passenger door flung open and Dom sat down next to her, she looked at him startled.
"Everyone's inside watching a flick what are you doing out here?" Dom said with one leg inside and one on the street.
"I....uhm..... just needed to think that's all" Eva's mind was still wondering.
"I didn't know Oscar was your brother you never mentioned him before" Dom was gonna start drilling her and she knew it.
"Well I thought he was still locked up and besides we haven't spoken in a while, we wnevenever really close" Eva was avoiding Dom's eyes.
"How about that other guy, you guys looked like you were really close" Dom said raising an eyebrow.
"Mike. We....were involved once but it went sour and we went our separate ways. He was kind of violent,
never towards me but I never doubted that he would put a hand on me, it was just a matter of time.." now she was looking at him in his eyes.
Dom sat in silence looking at her and out the window.
"Your brother and I were in Lapac together, after I came out I bumped heads with him on the streets" Dom looks in her eyes and continues "He was coked up and he didn't even remember me, shit I almost didn't recognize him, your not into that shit are you" he immediately regrets his words.
Eva feels anger rush up but contains herself and manages to say between her teeth swallowing hard.
"No"
Dom notices and begins to apologize "I didn't mean to insinuate, I just......." she turns around and cuts him off.
"What about that girl I saw you with in the picture upstairs"
"Letty. She was my girl for a very long time......... I fucked up with her and.............." Dom's eyes are shinning.
"Do...you still love her?" for some reason Eva needed to know. Mia had told her stories about Letty and how she had
met Dom and everything they had been thru, enough to know that she had been important in Dom's life.
Dom pauses before he answers the question.
" Yes, I do, I always will" Eva can tell the subject was hurting him he stops and changes the conversation. She had to
admit she respected him for that.
"How about family, where are your parents? Dom asks trying to get to know this mysterious girl.
"My mom still lives in Jersey with my younger sister, she refuses to move from our old house" she pauses
takes a breath and continues "My dad left when we were young, I used to get letters and birthday cards
until I was about 11 then they just stopped. My brother hates our father, blames him for everything we've
been thru. At the beginning I used to think that's why Oscar was so rebellious, but now I just don't know what
to believe" she was nervous and had started shaking her leg.
"You knowe tie time me and Oscar cut school, and of course Mike tagged along, he always liked me. Mike and my brother have been best friends forever. Anyway we went to this park by our town and there are these train tracks that cut across the park and as we were walking along them we could hear the train approaching, now mind you we were only about 8 or 9 years old and as the train got closer Mike stood right in the middle of the tracks. He was just standing there, we thought it was funny at first but then we started calling him and he wouldn't move. Then he called my brother to stand next to him, he was playing chicken with the damn train! My brother of course always had something to prove to Mike so he stood next to him and all I could hear was the the train's horn and I lost it, I started yelling at both of them. Mike was laughing and he wouldn't take his eyes off the train, my brother's face was getting scared and I could see it, when the train was but feet away from them Oscar jumped to the side pulling Mike with him" as Eva finishes her story both stay quiet in the car. Dom wonders if Eva is even aware of his presence.
"Ever since then I knew Mike would one day get my borther in trouble"
"Anything else I should know about you, any other surprises" putting his arm around her seat.
Eva looks at him and frowns.
"First of all you don't NEED to know anything about me, I don't even know why I told you that story I mean............." Dom cuts her off and says in a flirtatious way "You are so cute when your nervous" Eva simply looks at
him and burst out laughing.
"Come on let's go inside and watch this movie" he gets out the car goes around to her side opens her door and
extends his hand. 'How does he do that!' she thinks, he had a way of making her do anything he wanted.
Dom looks from the corner of his eye and sees the Honda Accord pull off about two houses down from them, he decides
not to mention it to Eva as they walk inside the house.
