Chapter Summary: John tries to get some sleep.

After John knocked on the wall and shouted out his complaint,
he growled a string of curses to himself as he walked back to the bed and lay
down.

Kids.

Damn kids.

Little respect for anyone but themselves.

He could hardly blame them.
If he was young again he would probably be acting in exactly the same
way. If he could find someone to act
that way with was up for debate. He had
never looked at someone the way that boy looked at the girl nor had anyone
looked at him like the girl had been looking at the boy in return.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Not even when he had been young and vulnerable
to that all consuming emotion or at least a fair facsimile of it.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Even all these years later he couldn’t claim
to have loved anything more than his parents and Annie, the old bull dog who
had up and died on him 5 years back.

It was a sad admission but a true onestyle="mso-spacerun: yes"> John Halloway would readily confess to.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> He had never shied away from the truth, at
least not when it concerned himself.

The kids had listened to him and were quiet now.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Probably drained, having used what little
energy they had left for the day on each other. The image of them holding onto each other as they drifted off to
sleep momentarily crossed the truck driver’s mind and left him feeling suddenly
lonely and miserable.

Once again he cursed the young couple before instantly
forgiving them. It wasn’t their fault
that they reminded him of what he didn’t have.

Remembering the haunted look in their eyes, John wondered
what they had been through earlier that day to freak them out so badly.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> He guessed they deserved a little respite
now. What had they been running from?

“Curiosity killed the cat,” he reminded himself out loud.

He would never lay on them some of the strange things he’d
encountered so maybe it was best they didn’t exchange horror stories.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Keep their secrets to themselves was
probably the best advice. It still roused his curiosity however.

At least they had gotten away from whatever they had
seen. As long as you were still
breathing you could deal. You could
rationalize it or just accept it, which was what you ended up doing in most
cases. Some things couldn’t be reasoned
away no matter what Mr. Or Mrs. Shrink told you.

John rolled onto his side, shutting his eyes tightly.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> He needed to get some sleep.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> He didn’t have time to lament his lonely
life or philosophize on the mysteries of the world. It would be an early wake up call in the morning.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> He was already behind as it was.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> The stupid, glassy eyes monstrosities he was
carrying needed to be delivered in 2 day to meet his requirements under the
contract he had signed.

The stupid dolls were creepy. The boy, Darry, had thought so too. In truth, he was glad to have the company and almost prayed that
Darry and Trish would stay with him until he dropped off the shipment of
dolls. It was good to have some
company. He hadn’t had much since Annie
had died.

Grateful for this, John eventually drifted off to sleep.

The last dream the man ever had was one where he was
surrounded by the dolls he loathed so much.
The smiles on their faces were gone.
Instead their lips were turned downward, locked forever in an eternal
frown. He tried to move and escape but
discovered he was frozen. In a state or
terror the man realized that the dolls were sewn to him, sewn with yarn and
wire. Where each thread traveled
through his flesh, blood seeped out, dripping down and painting the dolls faces
red.

He woke up preparing to scream but stifled it when he
realized it hadn’t been real. His heart
was pounding, sweat coated his face, rolling down in thick droplets.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> He tried to control his breathing and nearly
succeeded before he saw the doll lying at the end of the bed.

The first thought that entered his mind was that the couple
had placed the doll there as some kind of weird joke. However, as he picked up the doll he realized that it wasn’t even
the same doll that had been in the front of the transport.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> The doll in his hands was a brunette.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> The hair had been cut as if to resemble a
boy. The button nose had been butchered
so only a hole remained in the middle of its once supposedly angelic face.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> The dress had been ripped in half to form a
shirt, a feminine one but still a more masculine adornment than the dress it
had originally been dressed in. As he
turned it over John realized that the back of the doll’s head had been
mutilated as well. A large slice ran
down it, only narrowly escaping tearing the head completely in half.

A cool breeze stole into the room and for the first time the
truck driver realized that the door to his room was open.

He stood and walked towards it. Standing in the doorframe, staring at his transport in the
distance he did not hear the footsteps behind him or hear the swing of the axe,
its rusty blade encrusted with the blood of many men and women, as it was
forcefully brought down on his head, adding John Halloway’s own blood to the
mixture.

The Creeper stepped back has the body fell.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Has it landed, the blood soaked from out of
the killing cut into the carpet. John
lay beside the doll, an odd once living replica of it.

The monster crouched down gracefully on its victim and
devoured the part it had discovered by accident that it could use.

It had already taken care of the motel’s owner.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> The man had offered no sustenance but could
be collected and used later in it’s art.

The Creeper had followed the scent of Darius Jenner to this
rat trap and to its surprise had found not only the boy but the girl as
well. How this was possible it did not
waste its time contemplating, not while it was half-mad with the impulse to
feed.

However, knowing now that the children were cornered, the
Creeper’s playful nature was rekindled.
The urge of the cat to play with the mouse it had captured was strong.

It picked up the doll it had transformed into something
beautiful in its own eyes. It would scare the children first before it
fed. Make them pay for eluding it for
as long as they had. Another chance to have a little fun before it slept.

In the room next door, Darry moaned in his sleep.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Trish woke to see her brother grimace.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> She gently stroked his face and kissed his
forehead, smiling before falling back into her own sleep.
