Returning

The sun rose over their camp the next morning, waking Kylie. She was there alone, a clean new shirt laid out waiting for her. She looked around, not seeing Riddick anywhere, she gathered up the shirt and went into the ship, wanting to wash up and check her side.

She took the time to take a long hot shower, and as she came out of the bathroom, she heard movement in the pilot cabin. Grabbing a metal bar that was close by, she crept forward, still wearing only her towel.

She raised the bar over her head as she slid back the door. Before she could bring it down, a hand grabbed her wrist.

“Hang on there.”

“You’re intent on giving me a heart attack, or getting your brains bashed in. Which is it?”
She tossed the bar off to the side, frowning at him.

“How about neither.”

She shook her head, and turned, but he grabbed her wrist, pulling her in close to him. He leaned down, scenting her, nose against the skin of her neck. She didn’t fight him, merely standing there, eyes closed.

The feel of his breath on her skin, and she couldn’t help letting out a soft moan. He was so warm.

Suddenly he turned and walked away, leaving her there shivering. She wasn’t really surprised when he spent the rest of their week there away from the ship, exploring the city and the land around them.

Before long it came time to return to the Necropolis, and the ship was silent as they traveled. She wasn’t worried, but for the fact she felt like he was avoiding her. She was a little hurt, and confused. She wasn’t going to push things with him, in any way, but she hated being left in the lurch by his actions.

Things settled into a regular routine within days of their return. She spent the days standing by his throne as the ship made its way to the Threshold, a trip that was expected to take months.

She was on her way into Riddick’s chambers when she heard voices. She frowned and slipped into the shadows behind a statue, listening. The voices she heard were from Riddick and that woman, Dame Vaako.

“My Lord, I am pleased that you have granted me an audience.”

“What do you want?”

Risking a look around the statue, she could see the woman practically hanging off of Riddick, one of her hands running over his chest.

“I wished to speak with you privately, without my husband around. You see, I am not happy with him, I’d be so much happier with a strong, handsome man like you.”

His eyebrow raised. “And what do you expect me to do about it.”

”You keep what you kill m’lord.” She gave a seductive smile, a finger running over his jaw. “And I am quite a prize.”

With that Dame Vaako sat down on his lap, leaning in to whisper something into his ear. Kylie sighed, and walked out, slamming the door behind her. Just before it slipped shut completely, she saw a smug grin on Dame Vaako’s face.

She walked back to her rooms, avoiding speaking to anyone as she walked. She couldn’t help thinking about what she had seen. If he wanted that woman, then so be it, she could not warn him any more then she already had that she was a treacherous snake. Not surprising really, men rarely listened to intelligent advice.

She knew why this bothered her, more then what that woman was, what she could do, would do, if she got the chance. It was out of her hands now.

“Kendra? I’m eating here tonight, I will not need you this evening.”

With a nod, Kendra left. “As you wish.”

Kylie sat down in her chair, closing her eyes. She had made a promise, even if it was only to herself, and she would keep it. She slipped into a restless sleep there.
