Chapter 13- Q & A
Violet sat in the back garden, watching the sun set slowly toward the horizon. Her head was a whirling myriad of thought and none of them were good. She was frightened, so very frightened by what lay ahead. Her hands sat on her knees but they were still shaking. She hadn’t eaten a bite since their family dinner was interrupted by Agent’s Dickers and Price. She hadn’t been inside since the two of them ha left. Psychewave was free and would be out for revenge soon enough. He wasn’t kind the kind of person to just let her go, not after what she did to him. She wanted to take up Dicker’s offer of going to a safe house, running away from Psychewave and just sitting in the secluded area and would have Tony by her side as a bonus. All the while someone else could deal with Psychewave. It was a tempting offer but she knew that she wouldn’t take it; despite wanting so much to run there was just something inside that would always make her stay. She had personally gone through many names for what this force was; starting with the ‘Morals of being raised a Super’ and ending up with ‘Total Insanity’ and going through absolutely everything in between in the process. She couldn’t turn away from this problem, it was her problem. She may not have started it but she had thrown herself, headfirst, into it.
A noise threw her out of the deep trance and she turned with a start and gasp. Michael was stepping, timidly, out of the house and onto the patio. “Hi. I could go if you want.” He said in a quiet voice. It was so different to the one that she had heard him use when he stated how he would be staying to deal with Psychewave. This was the voice she had come to consider his normal tone, quite, under confident and almost weak. Violet found and smile and nodded her head.
“Hi.” She said in a friendly tone. “No, it’s alright. I was getting a little lonely anyway.”
Michael smiled, briefly and sat down by her side on the stone flooring of the patio. They sat in silence for a few more minutes, merely content with each others company and the glow of the sunset, both gaining their individual pieces of calm and pleasure out of it. But eventually Violet broke the spell.
“I need to know more about Psychewave.” She said, looking at Michael. He returned the stare, only his was filled with sadness and a little fear. He didn’t reply so Violet continued. “The old saying goes ‘know your enemy.’ and you were with Psychewave a lot longer than I was. I thought perhaps you might know a few things that I didn’t. Anything might help. It doesn’t matter how small.”
Michael turned away, no longer able to look at Violet. Inside he felt a coldness spreading as he forced himself to recall whatever memories he had either lost, or hidden, from those early days. “There isn’t much.” He muttered. Violet had to lean in close to hear him. “At least not much I remember. I met him only a few months before he’d met you. I don’t know if I found him or he found me. I don’t know if it was by fate, by his plans or just pure chance. I don’t anything. But he took me in. He said he’d keep me safe. He taught me to control my power. He took me to Ms Mode to get a real suit. He told me about all the good things that Supers had done in the past and why they were allowed to come back and help again.”
“He taught you about our heritage?” Violet said in slight wonder. It was hard to believe Psychewave would choose to become the caring teacher and mentor to the boy. But Psychewave and his plans were complicated like that. His actions seemed benevolent enough on the surface, but the acts of good only served as a distraction for his true dark intentions. She herself had believed that Psychewave was a colleague and, more than that, a good friend. When really he had been doing something to make it easier for her to fall under his spell.
Michael didn’t answer the question, instead he just kept talking. Now that he had started he seemed unwilling to stop. “Then, he began to say little things. Almost like jokes at first. Then casual comments. Then he became serious and told me about his plans to put supers in charge and how I could help. By then I think I was under his control and couldn’t say no.” He shivered violently, he hugged himself and closed his eye. But didn’t stop talking throughout. “He told me once that he was working on ways to make me safe from other Supers. He told me about you.” He finally opened his eyes and looked at Violet. “I think he called you a ’test case.’ He said he had planted some kind of order in your head that if you tried to trap me in a shield then you would go into some kind of trance that would make you…I think drunk-like, was the words he used. I don’t know I don’t remember much. He said you weren’t strong enough to stop me any other way than your shield.”
Violet said nothing. She knew that physically she was no match for Shifter in the werewolf form. But that was not the reason for her silence. For her a question that had nagged her for so long had finally been answered.
“He said if it worked he’d find a way to stop other Supers from being able to stop me. But not long after things changed. You came to our side. He stepped up his plans and brought the schedule forward. He was going to do the exact same things. But he was going to be more subtle. Taking months instead of days and influencing the right people and stuff. Then he would reveal himself, and his plans, when he had gained enough power and he had control over enough things that he couldn’t be stopped. You being there made the same kinda things happen, only sooner.”
“He could afford to be less subtle.” Violet said. “Because he had more power on his side.”
Michael nodded. “I guess so.” He muttered. “But I don’t know anything about him. No more than anyone else knows. The same stuff all the papers printed was the same kinda stuff I leaned. Easy stuff to find out. He never talked about himself. It was always about me or about his plans or about the Supers and other stuff. Always about something else and never about him.”
Outwardly Violet nodded in understanding. Inwardly she cursed herself for wasting time and learning nothing. Well almost nothing. She had learned how Shifter had managed to escape from her force field the first time they had met. But there was nothing really useful, like a weakness that Psychewave might posses that she could use to capture him again. It seemed she would now be forced to rely on her wits and luck. That frightened her.
She sighed and fell silent, there seemed to be nothing left to say. There were no words of hope that could lift her fears; at least none that could come to her mind. She watched the last of the light begin to drop below the horizon. There was a chill in the air that matched the cold feeling she had in her own chest. Psychewave would strike and strike soon. She wouldn’t have a presents nights sleep while he was free but she had to wonder if she would make it through the night at all. Would he come for her while she was trying to rest, dressed in her pyjamas and wrapped in her blankets? Or over breakfast in the morning? Or just sitting in class at school tomorrow? God, she hadn’t even thought about that until now; would she have to keep up her daily act of going to school while she could be attacked at any moment by a psychotic criminal? Vanisher was due to make a personal appearance at a meeting for her fan club in a couple of days, would she be expected to keep that appointment? So many questions and not enough answers.
Michael placed his hand on hers, making Violet jump in surprise. He was doing his best to try and be supportive by mimicking her actions from earlier; when she had grasped his hand. Since actions came easier than words to him this was his way of saying that she wasn’t alone in her worry. Violet a brave but brief smile. Michael returned the smile; one of the first she had seen since she’d met him.
“I’m glad we’re in this together.” She said. Michael nodded his head and, for some reason, his head twitched slightly and he bit his lip. He had suddenly grown nervous about something. “What’s wrong?” She pressed, leaning closer to listen in case he fell back into his habit of mumbling. Michael looked at her, his eyes fell to the floor. He looked again and his eyes fell again. Without warning he pushed his head forward and forced his lips upon hers. Violet’s eyes shot open wide and she pushed him away furiously. “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?”
Michael froze and stared. Horror rose up in his eyes as he realised what he had done. Violet had not wanted the same thing as he. He had been mistaken and now he acted on that and ruined everything. Tears rose up in his eyes and he jumped to his feet.
“I’m sorry. So sorry.” He raced off into the house.
Violet let him go. She couldn’t find her feet at the moment, her brain was too chaotic with other thoughts. He had kissed her. He had pushed his lips against her and kissed her. The thought was a lump in her head. Her brain couldn’t process it. That thought and the rest of her mind stayed at separate as oil and water. She had no idea he had felt about her that way. She had no idea how he got the impression she might feel the same way about him. She stared at the ground, trying to figure out what she had done, but nothing came to mind. All her actions, every word spoken, had been purely platonic. She stopped and looked at the door he had run through a second ago. Just because she had thought they were innocent actions, didn’t mean that he had thought along the same lines. Violet put her head in her hands and sighed. She would have to get him to talk about this and very soon, if not immediately. Violet knew she should try her best to handle it now, but she couldn’t bring herself to do it. The embarrassment was still too fresh. She needed time to get over his actions and knew that he would need to be alone for a little while longer before talking to anyone. “What kind of mess have you landed yourself into now?” She muttered to herself.
