Chapter 33 - Confrontations
Jack watched silently as Oria was shackled to the wall by several manacles in the opposite cell. The guards padlocked the cell door twice before the Commodore was happy to return to the deck. The captured pirates watched them leave in mutual silence neither looking at the other. Oria turned her gaze to Jack well aware that he was about to explode in some manner. He just sat and watched silently as she shifted slightly to try and get comfortable with the still tender wound in her side.
“That hurt?” She noted the spite that rippled through his voice and fought back the glare that was still an automatic response.
“If I said yes you’d only say good.” Jack looked away, he was uncomfortable at the truthful comment, he wasn’t proud of the fact. He didn’t really wish harm on her, he was just incredibly pissed off at her, the pirate crew who had stolen his Pearl… and her.
“Why did you do it Oria?” Oria met his eyes; her gaze was quiet, that ethereal patience for things like this shining through as bright as any beacon.
“Which part?” Jack glared at her, she was just making fun of him now.
“All of it. Why did you lie to me, make me believe that she was ours? Why did you endanger some innocent kid?” Oria watched as he stalked about the cell positively irate as he got himself really fired up.
“Firstly Jack how the hell did you think anything could have survived that gun shot? I nearly didn’t survive it how the hell did you expect some unborn kid to manage?” Oria looked at him incredulously, he still looked hurt, and she sighed. Clearly that wasn’t a good enough answer, “Jack I was going to tell you the day I told you about her but you just got so caught up in the thought that we were a happy little family that I didn’t have the heart to tell you otherwise. I thought for once I was doing something right, clearly I was wrong!” Jack sank down onto the planks and they sat in silence for a few seconds.
“So who are her parents?” Oria smirked slightly before noticing Jack’s expression and it quickly fell away.
“Her mother was some whore; she died before I got her name. Tossed into the cells of the Pearl with the kid once Barbossa had had his way. Her dying wish was that I cared for the baby ‘cos it was yours. She said she loved you and you were the only man who had touched her. I might be a completely heartless bitch sometimes but I’m not that heartless to abandon some kid and I keep my promises.” Oria paused to let Jack take the information in before continuing, “I never intended for ‘her’ to get mixed up in this. I let Barbossa believe that I had had a child so that when he got to the last few medallions I could run away and go under cover. He would then still be cursed, hunting for a child that didn’t exist, as I had promised Bootstrap they would remain. Sara was never supposed to come into the equation but she did and I adapted accordingly.”
“A decoy just like Barbossa said, nothing more than a cover for you and your games.” Oria shrugged.
“Think what you will Jack, my conscience is clear.” Jack slammed his fist against the bars furiously.
“A clear conscience, you always have a clear conscience. I never thought I’d say this but Barbossa was right, you’re nothing more than a snake contorting and twisting your way out of any knot. No thought for anyone else just as long as you are alright.” Oria turned away from him and folded up on herself, she had been wrong; he would never understand, she was alone. He stood glaring at her in silence.
Her thoughts came round about several times as she thought through everything, it was constant re-evaluation with her. There was no right or wrong set in black and white anymore. Jack wanted everything in grey and she desperately wanted to make him pleased with her or something along those lines. She did want to fit in but she just wasn’t configured for this arena and it was going to take time to get back on the track they had been travelling on before fate had intervened.
“Perhaps you’re right.” Jack paused, he hadn’t heard her this quiet before, just accepting it and letting herself be beaten down instead of retaliating, “Perhaps I am all wrong. Not meant for this or any other world. Just one big fat mistake of creation.” Jack stared dumbly for a few minutes, his mind whirling.
He looked at her more intently just studying her. She looked like a spanked child who didn’t understand the punishment and was just accepting it and attempting to find fault. He could practically see the cogs turning in her head as she puzzled her way through the problem. Jack sighed, in some ways she really was like a child needing a hand to guide her along the way.
“That was harsh of me, I’m sorry.” She shook her head.
“No, it was right. One step forward and twelve back except I keep on forgetting the forwards first part.” Jack knelt down in order to get at eye level with her; this was beginning to scare him. This calm logic and distant manner, it wasn’t her; there wasn’t any fire in it.
“Oria… I didn’t mean it. I was just angry, annoyed, I don’t know. I’m still here and Sara is still here, relatively unharmed. If you were really like that… like Barbossa said you were… I doubt either of us would be here now. You didn’t endanger either of us intentionally, might not have thought through some of the things but like I said we’re both still alive.” Oria was still looking away from him, “You love her like our own don’t you?” Slowly she nodded, the door to the brig banged open and they both glanced up as footsteps clomped down heavily. A guard appeared and leered between the two.
“Commodore wants to see Mr Sparrow.” Jack glanced up worriedly before nodding curtly and following him out of the brig as the guard grasped the manacles about his wrists. Oria watched them leave silently, why did he always do this? Why did he always give her a chance to redeem herself? She pondered this for a few more seconds before noticing a shadow slip quickly down the stairs and was distracted from her thoughts.
“Oria?” Sara paused, the name sounded wrong on her lips, she preferred ‘mama’. Slowly Oria’s gaze met hers and she smiled faintly.
“Hey kid, you all right?” Sara nodded and sat down on the other side of the cell bars.
“Who were my mama and papa? Did you kill them?” Oria closed her eyes at the child’s question; it hurt like hell especially with the calm understanding in the child’s eyes.
“No I didn’t kill her. Your mama was an… artist in Tortuga; she was killed in an attack by the Black Pearl under Barbossa. She asked me to look after you so I did. Your papa is still Jack Sara, I didn’t lie about that.” Sara nodded slowly watching her with those chocolate orbs.
“Then you didn’t kill her?” Oria bit her lip tightly and shook her head.
“No, I didn’t kill her.” Sara shifted forwards conspiratorially.
“But you are a murderer aren’t you.” Oria’s eyes slipped closed, this had to come, no doubt Will and Elizabeth had filled the child in with all her sordid past details. Slowly she nodded.
“Aye, I murdered people, like all pirates do when they are threatened.” Sara blinked at her.
“Are you going to murder me?” Oria’s gaze shot to Sara’s in shock her mouth hanging open.
“What? No! I would never hurt you Sara…” The girl nodded slowly and headed back up to the deck thoughtfully. Oria let her head bang back against the wood of the ship and groaned in despair. She was beginning to understand just how much she had mucked up and it was hitting her harder than a blacksmith strikes his anvil. Her eyes slipped closed and she cursed, this time she had really out done herself, how proud Davy Jones would have been.
