Chapter 12 - Gamble
Oria glanced at Bootstrap unsurely, he smiled faintly, “Oria, I think it might just be nerves.” Oria started slightly and scowled before glaring at him.
“Nerves?” He nodded faintly and sat down next to her on the bench.
“Aye, is something worrying you?” Oria studied him intently checking this wasn’t a joke, his serious gaze told her he was deadly serious.
“I don’t get ‘nerves’.” He smiled faintly.
“Well I’m fairly sure you’re not pregnant.” He whispered wary that someone could still overhear, not that there was anything really to overhear, “You must be worrying about something.” Oria stood up sharply.
“I’d rather be… wait…” She smiled cruelly after a few moments of contemplation and glanced at Bootstrap, he shuffled backwards slightly not liking the look in her eyes as she strode up to him, “You are going to tell Maccus that I am pregnant at an opportune moment.” Bootstrap frowned as she paced the room, “Yes, that would work, you tell him that and I’ll deal with the consequences.”
“Oria, what are you talking about.” Her eyes met his sharply and he wriggled uncomfortably at the intense gaze.
“Just do what I say and make sure it’s in front of as many people as possible.” Slowly he nodded, he was fairly sure that even though they had been friends previously she would not pause to kill him now should he refuse her. Jones stepped down into the cabin his gaze resting on the pair curiously.
“You’re boy is something of a fool.” Jones whispered to Bootstrap who frowned in confusion.
“William?” Cheering roared from outside and the pair followed Jones out to the deck where Will was sat at the table a cup in front of him hiding his dice. Bootstrap rushed forwards, “What are you doing?” Oria glared down at Will.
“I leave you alone for one second and you go and do this? What are you stupid or just thick-headed?” They both glared at her, Jones merely chuckled and pushed her backwards to stand behind him as he sat down.
“You are both to stay here and watch this.” He instructed as a cup and dice set was placed in front of him. Bootstrap glanced around and quickly slammed down a set of his own pulling a crate over to sit on. Oria stared at them both in disbelief.
“Well at least we know it’s hereditary!” They both ignored her as Jones continued with a chuckle.
“The stakes?” He hissed out to them relishing each word as it rolled from his tongue.
“My soul… an eternity of servitude.” Oria rolled her eyes, now she knew it was stupidity. Jones chuckled believing it would be like taking candy from a baby.
“Against?” Will fumbled in his pocket and drew out a scrap of cloth.
“I want this.” Jones flicked it open and bristled as he spotted the drawing.
“How do you know about this?” Will paused at the question and contemplated his answer.
“That’s not part of the game is it.” He stated, without warning Jones leapt up and pinned Oria against the wall by her throat with his clawed hand.
“You told them.” He shook the cloth in front of her face furiously.
“I didn’t give that to Will!” Jones bristled, “I didn’t give it to Will and I didn’t tell him anything about it.”
“You’ve lied before about going after me heart! Why should I believe you now?” Oria pushed against his claw as the ragged edges bit into her throat.
“Because in case you hadn’t noticed I’m here not somewhere else looking for the heart! You honestly think I’d bring it here only to steal it right from under your nose? I’m not thick ‘Captain’.” Shame that was her actual plan once Jack had freed himself, still at least it meant that Jones would be less likely to consider it. Slowly he released her, conceding that she had a point and he had a soul to destroy.
“You will have to prove yourself to me once more until then you will not leave the brig.” He sat back down and looked at the cup suspiciously as the game began.
:/
Oria wrapped her arms around her legs and shivered slightly, the cells were freezing, water was running down the walls and dripping form the ceiling and there was nothing but her mind to occupy her. Night had fallen some time ago and all the ship was silent, the organ having droned on for a few hours before dozing off with Jones. A creak came on the stairs and she glanced up to see Will, the key of Davy Jones dangling through the open space in his shirt. Oria stared at it dumbly, “You got the key.” She stated disbelievingly, Will smiled faintly and stepped up to the cells.
“My father told me about your… condition. I got the key to get you out as well.” Oria smiled faintly so Bootstrap had done his bit all she needed now was for Jones to hear the ‘news’. She raised an eyebrow as Will slowly eased the door open and held a hand out to her. More than anything she wanted to take that hand and let him guide her away back to Jack. More than anything she wanted that hand to be Jack’s.
“I can’t.” He grasped her wrist and tried to drag her up, she snapped her wrist free, “He’ll know where I am, if I come he’ll follow. Will, you have to leave me here and promise me that you won’t tell Jack about… you know.” He stepped further into the cell and tried to drag her out again, she drew a small dagger.
“Oria, please. Jack sent me here to get you and the key; I’m not leaving with only half the deed done.” She shook her head amused by his insistence, such a do-gooder. Shame so few of those survived where pirates were concerned.
“If you don’t think I won’t kill you Will then you thought wrong. Now go.” She pushed him back out of the cell and shut the door behind him. He stared dumbly, “You honestly think you’d get off this ship and to a safe distance before he realised that both I and the key were gone? You’ve already made a stupid gamble today Will don’t make another one.” Slowly he turned away and headed for the stairs he paused and glanced back.
“I will come back for my father and you if Jack fails.” Oria stood up in panic as Will left.
“If Jack fails what?” It was too late, he was already gone and she was in a state of panic the sick feeling intensifying. Damn Bootstrap for being right, since when had her nerves of steel abandoned her. What was it with men and doing stupid things? She prayed Jack wasn’t going to do what she thought he was going to do.
