Chapter 12 – Into The Depths
Jack stirred slowly, his head on his hands and body complaining crossly at being tossed so cruelly against the boards. Easing himself up from his sprawled position on the deck of the Pearl Jack glanced about the ship as the rest of the crew groaned and began to re-gather their scrambled senses. Stumbling backwards he leant against the banister for a few seconds with his eyes closed, a pounding headache demanding his full pained attention.
“You’re bleeding.” Elizabeth whispered, taking his elbow swiftly and attempting to lead him towards the cabin. Jack snapped himself free of her grasp and turned around to glance about the ship ignoring the dull thump of his head increased by the burning glare of the ocean.
“We made it.” He exclaimed proudly, a broad grin spreading over his face and lighting up his soul as his eyes grazed over the swirling sandy island to port. Turning swiftly he twirled Elizabeth around in exhilaration with a cry of joy before charging over to Tia leaving a rather startled Elizabeth to cling dizzily to Will. The young man looked rather annoyed at Jack’s erratic behaviour and more so at the fact that Elizabeth had not appeared at all phased and if he dared admit it. She almost looked pleased at the attention of the mildly insane pirate. Tia was quickly clasped tightly against the pirate as he praised her continually for guiding them to the desolate place; she smiled and patted him on the back gently. Jack kissed both her cheeks before rushing about the ship and stirring the still dazed crew into getting the Pearl closer to the island.
Elizabeth let a shaky sigh fall from her lips as Will stepped away. Her eyes were resting on Jack as he stood at the helm, now entirely oblivious to her very existence. Elizabeth knew what would happen once Oria returned; the pirates’ gaze would not rest on her again. Her mind reprimanded her sharply at the thought. She should only want Will; after all it was he and not the pirate who had braved all for her rescue.
There was something about Jack though, something she couldn’t place her finger on, but knew that she must. Elizabeth had to know what it was that so tempted her to the man. A heated chocolate gaze suddenly encased her and she turned away, Jack’s eyes following her with a faint smile as if he knew every thought in her mind.

Oria slowly drew the tiger tooth necklace from her pocket, running her fingers over it tenderly. The smooth bone warm under her touch, it sang almost as she stroked the elegant curve. Turning it in her fingers she paused and frowned, drawing the tooth closer to her gaze as an ebony pen stroke began to draw across the ivory. Slowly a painted ship arose in sharp contrast to the bone, perfect in every detail. “Tease,” She accused the tooth dejectedly. With a heavy sigh she fastened the tie around her neck and tucked the tooth down her shirt to rest against her skin. It was just another illusion, another false hope.
“Sails,” Barbossa shouted from his vigil at the top of a dune to her left. Oria stumbled to her feet and ran towards him, granted rather drunkenly as the sand slipped and shifted beneath her feet. For a second she contemplated that this was probably how Jack felt all the time when he tried to walk through his rum soaked perception. “Black sails on the horizon.” He repeated as she drew level and took the proffered spy glass. Gazing down the cylinder she watched as the ebony sails rested stationary proclaiming the presence of the Black Pearl further down the beach.
Oria laughed in disbelief and passed the spy glass back before jogging down the slope, closely followed by Barbossa. He was easily as eager as her to get off the god forsaken island and would be perfectly happy if he never had to look at another inch of sand for the rest of his life.

Elizabeth stumbled free from the row boat and jogged after Jack who shouted over his shoulder for the rest of the crew to stay with the ship till he returned. Elizabeth swiftly ignoring the command and catching up with him as he stumbled down the downwards stroke of the dune.
“Wait, Jack.” Elizabeth shouted as she slipped and slid down the slope after him, the pirate paused momentarily for her to catch up.
“I told you to wait with the crew.” Jack protested as she kept his pace across the valley between the dunes. He began to clamber up the following hill and slide down the next, Elizabeth barely a millimetre behind him.
“Wait, I want to know something before…” Elizabeth pleaded and finally the pirate stopped moving and turned to face her. A curious expression was adorning his features and those eyes were resting on her intensely, patiently awaiting her to continue.
“What do you want to know?” He queried softly, nothing but the slightest of breezes caressing the otherwise stationary air between them. Elizabeth momentarily lost her nerve and stood dumbly for a few seconds. She began to step forwards only for Jack to brush her aside sharply.
“Jack. I knew you’d come!” Oria slipped down the dune, her haste causing the sand to shift precariously beneath her feet and send her sliding down the slope as if it were a child’s slide. Jack dragged her upright as she landed at his feet, immediately encasing her tightly in his arms and pressing her as tightly as he could to his skin. Soothing relief was flooding through his body sweeter than any rum every second that she was there, real and there in his arms.
Her arms wrapped about him just as tightly as she kissed every inch of his face she could reach. “I knew…” She was quickly silenced as Jack clashed his lips with hers. Only pulling away for breath, Oria laughed and brushed her fingers over any part of him that she could reach, pinned as she was. A broad smile firmly plastered in place at his appearance. His eyes trailed past their pleased exploration of her and up to the crest of the dune something drawing his attention.
“You!” Jack shouted, his grip tightening protectively once more. “I thought you were dead.”
“I am dead, you fool. How else do you think I wound up down here?” Barbossa chided as he made his way steadily down the shifting sands. “Your lovely little pirate lass did me the honour of sending me here.” Jack glanced at Oria.
“Davy Jones, I didn’t think it appropriate to mention before.” She explained with a slight smile while warily glancing between the pair and avoiding Jack’s murderous glare at the mention of the tentacled Captain. “He’s paid with his blood Jack, twice.”
“Aye, but blood isn’t enough to redeem a man…” Jack shouted before registering what she had said. “Twice, how twice?”
“He was resurrected, so to speak by Tia Dalma…” She slowed noticing Elizabeth who was looking rather flabbergasted at the scene that had unfolded. Oria snapped herself free from Jack’s grasp. Slowly the pirate turned and glanced between the two women.
“Might be a stupid question but… why is she here?” Oria accused, already suspecting Jack wasn’t playing fair. Jack glanced between them once more confused with the sudden switch of conversations and the return of the pounding headache now that the relief was done with. Slowly it dawned on him what Oria was thinking.
“Not what you think love, got Will as well. They just came along for the ride.” Jack assured, Oria slowly returned her gaze to him.
“Only it’s not just the ship that they ride is it?” She quipped, Elizabeth blushed and turned her gaze away at Oria’s statement and Jack grew increasingly uncomfortable.
“Anna-Maria…” Jack began only to dwindle off the explanation as he caught a glimmer of amusement in her eyes.
“Come on Jack, if you wanted me to get jealous at least make it plausible.” Oria teased, Jack began to smile with relief and draped an arm about her waist leisurely, Barbossa all but forgotten. Slowly the scowl returned.
“What do you mean at least make it plausible. What you were thinking or pretending to think about thinking IS perfectly plausible!” He announced in annoyance, the issue of Barbossa now entirely forgotten. Oria laughed at his expression.
“Sure, as if Miss Prim-n-Proper would even think of touching you if she didn’t have to. A Governor’s daughter and a pirate? Hardly likely is it, Jack.” Neither noticed the continued blush of Elizabeth who swiftly turned her face away from the gathering and followed at the back of the group as they made their way to the ship.
