Chapter 12:

His mind was trying to tell him something. But he wasn't quite ready to listen. Luke rolled over, and started awake when he encountered someone else. Suddenly he remembered what his mind had been trying to tell him- he had slept with Leia last night.

'Oh gods. What have I done?' Luke thought.

'Nothing terrible,' the less noble side of his mind told him. 'It's not like Vader was doing anything with her anyway.'

'Vader,' Luke thought with a cringe. While Luke and his father had started to get along, the two still had a long way to go. 'Have I just ruined all chances of ever having a relationship with my father?'

Luke stared at Leia, who was still sleeping peacefully beside him. Reaching out beside him, Luke ran his hand over her hair. Leia stirred a little, but then settled closer to his body. Luke could feel his desire rising as her hot breath tickled his chest. He tried-and failed- to resist touching her body again. But the softness of her skin was a sensation he hadn't had quite enough of yet. Running his index finger up and down her arm, Luke watched her face as she lay beside him. As he moved to the curve of her stomach, Leia opened her eyes.

“What are you doing?” she asked sleepily.

“What does it feel like I'm doing?” Luke returned.

“Luke,” Leia sighed and moved away from him. “I don't know if this is something we ought to be doing.”

“Why? You wanted to last night,” Luke said, sitting up in the bed.

“That was last night. Maybe it's because I have a different perspective today,” Leia said, getting out of bed and looking for her clothes.

“I don't get it. You've wanted to sleep with me for Force knows how long. And suddenly you don't?” Luke said, a tone of frustration in his voice.

Leia didn't answer him as she put some clothing on, so she wouldn't be exposed in front of him.

“Luke,” Leia finally said turning to look at him. “I haven't been married long, but I have quickly figured out that Vader will inevitably find out everything you don't want him knowing.” As she spoke, Luke got out of bed and put his pants on. “It's like he can see into your soul and know every dark secret that lies there. He'll figure this out. And, well, as mad as he'll be for it happening once, I'd rather not fuel that rage by sleeping with you again.”

“You're letting Vader dictate your actions?” Luke asked incredulously.

“Vader is a powerful man. I've seen him kill people for less than what we've done. Forgive me for being cautious.” Leia retorted.

“Being cautious would have been stopping last night before we'd ever done anything!” Luke cried.

“But I wanted it,” Leia said. “I wanted to belong to you, for at least one night in my life.”

Luke stared at her for a few moments before finally speaking. “Why didn't you mention that it would be a one-time only occasion?”

“I don't know. Maybe because I hadn't fully made up my mind yet.”

“But you have now,” Luke stated.

“I'm sorry,” Leia said, sorrow evident in her voice as she walked over and put her hands on either side of his face. “Luke, I loved last night. It was amazing. I wish we could have that between us all the time. But we can't. And you know that.”

“A little warning would have been nice,” Luke softly said, looking into her eyes. Reaching up, he moved her hands from his face but didn't release them.

“If I had told you, you might not have slept with me at all.”

“Manipulation,” Luke said. “Blatant and utter manipulation. But you know, if you had told me, I probably would still have slept with you. I just would have made it last longer. Because I would have known that come morning, I would have had to let you go.”

“I'm sorry,” Leia whispered, looking up at him. “I wish we could sleep together again. I really do.”

Luke nodded, not saying a word.

“Maybe one day,” he whispered, reaching out and stroking her cheek with the back of his hand.

A few hours later, Leia came into the kitchen. Luke looked up at her entrance. Seeing her arms filled with laundry he asked, “What are you doing?”

“Putting off the inevitable as long as possible,” Leia answered.

“Which is..” Luke prompted.

“Vader is going to find out Luke. Maybe, if I change the sheets, it'll buy us a couple of days.”

“You really think changing the sheets is going to do it? How exactly is this going to work?”

“I don't know. I'm grasping at straws here. Shouldn't it accomplish something?” Leia asked as she put the laundry into the machine.

“Vader has the Force. Nothing is going to stop him from finding out.”

Leia turned and looked at him. “We really have no chance do we?” she asked.

“Maybe if we act as if nothing happened or changed. But I don't know.”

“I'm scared,” Leia softly said. “How mad do you think he'll be?”

“I don't know,” Luke said, stroking her face. “But he'll probably be more mad with me than with you.”

“Oh gods,” Leia gasped. “What if...what if this ruins....”

“Don't,” Luke said. “Please don't. I'm trying very hard to not think about what this will do.”

“But your relationship is so fragile,” Leia said.

“I know,” Luke answered. “My mind is running in circles thinking of every scenario it can.”

“And..” Leia prompted.

“And the only thing I can think of is that he'll be raging mad at me, and never want to talk to me or see me again.”

“Luke,” Leia said. “I'll always talk to you. You know that right?”

Luke gave a small smile. “Yes, I do. But it's not quite the same.”

“Sorry,” Leia returned.

Giving in to the urge, Leia leaned into his arms, where the two held each other in a loving and supportive embrace.

A few days later, Luke and Leia had gone walking around the Death Star. While walking, they encountered Admiral Piett.

Luke stared off into space as Leia and the Admiral talked politics. As Vader's right hand man, Piett knew things that most officers wouldn't. Including Vader's plot to overthrow the Emperor.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, an officer rushed to the Admiral's side.

“Admiral Piett,” Major Adams said.

“Yes,” Piett said, turning away from Luke and Leia to give the major his attention.

“Sir. Lord Vader has returned.”
