They set and ate in silence. Once they were finished, the duke looked at both Melanie and Erik.

“I have a very important subject to speak with you two. Please, follow me to my office…” he said as he stood up and slowly made his way to the other room.

Melanie and Erik followed the older man exchanging curious glances between them. The duke set by his desk and motioned for them to sit on the chairs located across the table. He then took a newspaper in his hands.

“I received yesterday afternoon, with my mail, an exemplar of this English newspaper. Today, as I waited for you I read a bit of it and, I came across this article which might be of interest to you Erik… Here’s the part of it that I find interesting…” he said and then, looking at the page set in front of him, read:

“Surgeries for facial reconstruction have appeared on 5 thousand years old Egyptian parchments. At the same time, in India, surgeons used to operate deformed and mutilated soldiers coming from the war. On the other hand, cutting off the nose of an unfaithful consort was routine. Therefore, many people had to arrange a new nose. In the beginning of the 18th century, the expression “plastic surgery” came to life originally from the Greek expression “plastikos” which means “to give form”. Generally, the surgery is progressing with the discovery of new sterilization and anesthesia techniques. Etc, etc, etc…” the duke lifted his head to look at the two pair of eyes staring back at him.

There was a long silence.

“So? Are you both just going to stare at me dumb faced? Close your mouths before your chins fall. Tell me what you think! Erik, would you have the courage to try this “plastic surgery”?” the duke asked laying the newspaper on the desk and crossing his hands over it.

“Are you… Sir, are you giving me the hope of having a normal face?” Erik asked, leaving the absent state the news had left him in.

“Well, maybe not totally normal…however it would look much better. Good enough for the police to leave you alone.”

“Daddy, these are wonderful news! How can it be done?” Melanie asked suddenly bending herself forward and resting her forearms on the desk.

“I will look into it and, if my friend here decides he wants to do it, we leave on the first ship to India…”

Melanie turned her face towards Erik.

“Like I said before, I don’t care what your face looks like. But Erik, think about it… it could free you from all the accusations made against you. Please, let’s try it!”

Erik’s expression was unreadable.

“Monsieur le duc, this would imply in great expenses … I don’t believe you would be kind enough to do this for me…” he narrowed his eyes in a suspicious meaner.

“Dear boy, when you walked down the corridor of that secret passage… didn’t it remind you of anything? Besides the opera’s underground, of course…” the duke smiled.

“Well, I felt like I was inside of one of my creations…” Erik said.

“And it was! All the passages we have in this palace were either reformed or built by you. That one in Melanie’s room was completely designed by you. You’ve reformed all the buildings I own and, if I am now a rich man it is thanks to you and your geniality.”

“Daddy, I had absolutely no idea.” Melanie looked at her father, her eyes wide with surprise.

“I never saw the need to tell you. I did not think it was important to involve you in my business matters. Now Erik, only you may decide your future. But, please, do not worry about expenses… even though I’ve paid for your services, I believe it was not enough. Your talent has made of me one of the richest men in France.”

Erik lowered his head and stood in silence for a moment before lifting his eyes again to look at the duke and then at Melanie.

“If you don’t mind, I need to think. No one has ever been kind for me the way you are and that leaves me… lost… I do not know exactly how to act. If you excuse me, I will retire to my room. We may talk about this later.

With that said, he stood up, kissed Melanie’s hand, bowed his head to the duke and strode off of the office and up the stairs to his bedroom.

Melanie stood up and tried to follow him, but her father’s voice stopped her.

“Let him go, my child. This is a decision which is up to him to make and the poor man is extremely confused. Think about it, he lived with this deformity his whole life. He became a murderer and a tortured man because of it… and now he has the chance to at least subside a bit of this ugliness. Besides the fact that it might set him free of all the accusations made against him. If he decides to go, when we return I can introduce him as a distant cousin, from your mother’s side of the family, who is now going to live with us. What do you think?” the duke said, smiling when he saw his daughter’s eyes shining with delight.

“You thought about everything, didn’t you?! But, I need to ask you something that, to me is really important… Daddy, if Erik ever asks to marry me… would you consent on it?”
