Chapter Fourteen: Tumble in the rough
The first thing Liljana was aware of was screaming. Then she became aware that she was shivering. Freezing. Her eyes opened slowly and she saw her mother standing by the door, a hand to her chest, eyes fixed on her.
Liljana went to say something, but couldn’t speak. He teeth chattered together and wouldn’t stop. It was then that she looked down, seeing that she was still sitting in the bath. She could see her skin under the water which looked a strange mixture of light purple and blue.
“Fred! Fred, call an ambulance!” Liljana’s dad rushed into the bathroom in his tatty bathrobe, his eyes widening at what he saw. He grabbed the towel off the side and rushed to Liljana, gripping her arms, helping her stagger out of the bath. He wrapped the big towel around her body, holding her close, rubbing her arms to keep her warm.
Her mum picked up the phone that had been dropped on the floor and called for an ambulance as Fred wrapped her in the dressing gown that she had taken off last night and the towel.
Just over ten minutes later, an ambulance turned up and the two paramedics helped Liljana down the stairs and into the back of the ambulance, lying her down and placing blankets over her pale, shivering form.
Her mother and father climbed in behind, having just thrown on some trousers and their coats.
Her dad gripped her hand tightly and squeezed reassuringly but Liljana started to wheeze, striving for breath before the world disappeared into darkness.

“Well done, Agents. I am highly impressed with how well you have picked up your training. I would like Tyler, Sands, Edwards and Brown to follow me in a moment where I will explain your first assignment. Scott, Guthrie, Maddocks and Redgrave will go with Agent Forbes. And lastly, Mallard, Robbins, Chambers and Pinkett will go with Agent Thorpe. Got that?”
There was a resounding “Yes Sir” from all trainees and everyone moved into their groups quickly and efficiently before following their assigned agents to different rooms.
Sands, Tyler, Edwards and Brown all stood before Agent Parker, awaiting their first task. “Okay, Agents. I have derived from everyone’s training that you four are the strongest candidates for this particular assignment. Bill Lowe is known as ‘Big Bill’. He is an upcoming drug dealer, who is planning to ship over a ton of cocaine to various countries at the end of the week by private jet. He owns a warehouse in Mexico, where he keep the cocaine. Now, this warehouse is in the middle of nowhere. Surrounded by security and guards. You four will scout out the location, and arrest Lowe before he ships out any more cocaine.”
Sands looked at Paul in disbelief, ‘This seems like a big assignment for four trainees who haven't actually been out in the field before.’ Paul met his eyes and his expression mirrored Sands’.
“There is one catch, however.”
‘Never would have guessed that.’
“Lowe lives in a mansion a couple of hundred yards from the warehouse and doesn’t leave the grounds.”
‘Joy.’
“There are two motel rooms four miles away from the location with all the equipment you will need for the assignment. Your flight leaves at seven tonight and there will be a car waiting for you at Mexico airport. I suggest you go and pack, Agents. Good luck.”
Parker handed Edwards an envelope which no doubt contained the flight tickets and opened the door for them. They filed out of Parker’s office and shared a look before retreating to their stations.

“Staying in the cold water for that long has caused her immune system to weaken a lot and she has contracted acute bronchitis. I would like to keep her in overnight to monitor her activity before we send her home. It’s better to be safe than sorry. There is a good chance it could get worse with her white blood cell count so low.”
“Can we stay with her?”
“I’m afraid you won’t be able to stay, but you can see her before you leave. Would you like me to leave it up to you to explain?”
“Yes, thank you doctor.” Fred placed an arm around his wife’s shoulders in a reassuring gesture as they walked into the room where Liljana was lying awake.
“Hey, Sweetie how are you feeling?”
“Everything hurts.” Liljana said quietly, her throat burning as she said it. She coughed painfully and her mother pushed her hair back off of her face.
“What were you doing in the bath, Sweetie?”
“I couldn’t sleep. I thought it would relax me. I must have fallen asleep.”
“Honey, the doctors want to keep you in overnight for observation. Just to make sure you’re okay. Doctor Nugent explained that you have acute bronchitis and it could get worse so you’ll be looked after here, tonight.”
Liljana coughed painfully, clenching her fists at the feeling shooting through her body and nodded silently.

Sands scanned the row of cars waiting outside the airport and spotted a man holding up a sign displaying, ‘P.Tyler’.
“That’s us.” He pointed to the man and they walked over to the car, getting in after shaking the driver’s hand.
The driver pulled away from the curb and introduced himself as Carlos in a thick accent. He explained that he would be their chauffer on the assignment and that he was a member of the Mexican police sent to aid them.
After forty minutes of driving down dirt tracks and unmade roads, they pulled up in front of a grubby looking motel on a long stretch of road in the middles of nowhere.
Brown frowned as he looked out the window at the surrounding area, a mix of grasses and dried dirt, “I thought Lowe was only four miles away? I can’t see squat for as far as the eye can see.”
Edwards shrugged and climbed out of the car, followed by the others. Carlos led them up two flights of creaky stairs at the front of the motel and opened the first door that they came to, motioning for the men to enter.
Sands grimaced at the smell. A mixture of dust, damp and general ‘oldness’. There were four single beds pushed up against one wall whilst on the other side of the room there was a large table stacked with files and folders, beside which was the bathroom door. The look on the other’s faces shared the same sentiments. They dumped their bags on their beds and sat together at the table, sifting through the files. Tyler opened the one nearest to him, “This is a profile on Lowe. His stats, previous convictions...”
“And this one has all the information about his estate’s security system. Codes, security guard shifts...” Sands said as his eyes skimmed the pages.
Carlos shifted in his chair, “The start of Lowe’s estate is four miles away. But there are acres of ground to cross before you get to the mansion and the warehouse. They are tucked in a clearing surrounded by trees. You wouldn’t know there was anything there if you happened to walk past it.”
“Let’s get to work then.”
