Chapter 14

Jack didn’t sell papes the next day, instead he went to Irving Hall to see Snoddy, who worked as pianist there a few days a week. He found him going over some music sheets backstage.
"Hey, Snoddy!"
Snoddy looked over his shoulder and grinned.
"Hey Jack, how’s it going?’
"I need your help," said Jack.
"Shoot."
Jack told Snoddy his plan then said, "Well, think you can do it for me?"
"It’s kind of short notice," said Snoddy.
"Aw c’mon! I know you! You can do it in two seconds!" said Jack with an encouraging smile. "You got to help me out buddy," he pleaded.
Snoddy thought for a minute then said, "You got it."
Lit’l Bit sat on her bunk brushing her hair while Briar got changed in the bathroom. She came out wringing out her wet hair and sat down next to Lit’l Bit.
"Have you seen Jack today?" asked Lit’l Bit.
"No, I haven’t.” said Briar. “Why?" she added slyly.
"Oh no reason." Lit’l Bit looked away nonchalantly.
"Uh huh, yeah right."
Lit’l Bit stuck out her tongue at her friend and laughed. Suddenly, Snoddy came into the bunkroom with Lit’l Bit’s coat and threw it at her.
"Come with me," he instructed.
"What? What’re you talking about?" she asked.
"Snoddy, what’s going on?" added Briar.
"You’ll see. You come too, Briar." He took both girls by the hand and led them to Irving Hall.
"This place is deserted, why are we here?" hissed Lit’l Bit as he made them sit down then disappeared backstage. Lit’l Bit looked over at Briar who shrugged. Just then the curtains opened and they saw Jack standing center stage, looking extremely nervous.
"Now what’s he up to?" Lit’l Bit whispered to Briar. Her question was answered when a soft piece of music started up and Jack began to sing.

Jack sang the chorus one last time before ending the song. Lit’l Bit was staring at him with her mouth hanging open, Briar on the other hand was staring to Jack’s right, where Snoddy sat at the piano playing the sad tune behind the song. Snoddy starting up another tune on the keys, the same sort of heartfelt melody, followed a second’s silence.

"I’m so sorry. I love you Lit’l Bit," he said honestly. "Do you forgive me?"
Lit’l Bit nodded. "Yes." Their lips met in a searing kiss.
Briar crossed her arms over her chest and stood next to Snoddy in the stage wings. "Well, what do you know?" she muttered grinning at the couple.
Jack and Lit’l Bit headed to the sickroom once they got back to the Lodging House, Jack locked the door behind them as she sat on the bed smiling up at him.
"I can’t believe you did that for me," she said.
"I meant it. I’ve never met anybody like you."
Lit’l Bit’s heart skipped a beat. "Really?"
"Really, You’re all I ever wanted in a girl and more."
She grinned and leaned over, putting her chin in her palm. "Keep talking."
Jack came over to the bed and sat down next to her. "There’s something about you, I don’t know. I can’t stop thinking about you. "Like Mush and Race?" asked Lit’l Bit with a sly smile.
"And I got the bruises to prove it," said Jack. "You deserve to be with someone who cares about you like that. And I’m going to try to be that someone. I promise. All I want from you is to be mine. Will you do that for me Lit’l Bit?" he gazed at her with longing, sincere eyes that she’d never seen before, it made them all the more beautiful to her.
"Will you?" he asked again.
In answer, she laced her fingers behind his neck and pulled him into a kiss. He responded and wrapped his arms around her, crushing her body against his. He parted his lips and flicked his tongue over her mouth, tickling her. He pulled away and looked deep into her eyes before moving so that he was sitting behind her on the bed.
