Chapter 34 - A Cunning Plan
Jack hadn’t returned for the duration of the voyage back to Port Royal. Oria had been on her own for the past three days, only the guards came down to drop off food and water and they left and arrived without a word. With nothing but her thoughts for company she was beginning to feel insane, she understood now… she understood only too well and hated herself with a vengeance in the silence.
Over and over she had asked herself how she would have felt if Sara had been her daughter an taken by some deranged pirates and murdered. The part of her mind that still lived in the world of black and white shouted that it was an acceptable price to pay in order to keep those pirates eternally damned. Then the part Jack had found had whispered loudly that as a mother it was an unacceptable loss. That whisper hadn’t grown any louder yet it had quietened the original down to nothing more than a distant growl.
Not only had she endangered Sara she had threatened practically every female child in the Caribbean. Every mother in the Caribbean had been in danger of losing their child and all because Oria had sought to go to whatever ends necessary in order to keep the pirates cursed and killing.
Lighter footsteps heralded the approach of someone not of the usual guards and she was jerked from the endless repetition. Oria watched as the bottom of a gown appeared and Elizabeth stepped down gracefully with a gentle smile.
“I thought you might want some company, we’ll be coming in to port tomorrow morning.” Oria watched silently as the young woman dragged a barrel over to sit on, “How are you?”
“How do I look?” Oria whispered, her voice slightly cracked from the lack of use, Elizabeth smiled faintly, “Where’s Jack and Sara?”
“Jack’s locked in a passenger cabin; James didn’t want you two planning some fancy take over of the Dauntless. Sara is with Will most of the day and she sleeps in my cabin at night. She’s a really sweet girl.” Oria smirked.
“Should have been a dead giveaway that she wasn’t mine then.” Elizabeth looked away uncomfortably, Oria watched her silently for a few seconds. “Why are you here really?” Oria whispered, the girl’s gaze shot back to her in surprise, “We both know you don’t like me so there must be an ulterior motive. Get it over with now for god’s sake.” Elizabeth blushed slightly.
“There was no ulterior motive.” Oria raised an eyebrow and the girl blushed deeper, “I just wanted to know… I was just curious…” She tailed off and ran back up the steps, Oria watched her go with a knowing smirk. Elizabeth had been bitten by the pirating bug.
:/
The crowds in Port Royal when the two pirates were dragged off were enormous; they filled the streets with noise and bustling as children pushed to get to the front. It wasn’t every day that the two most infamous pirates and crew were brought back in chains. Men and women jeered and chortled as the Pearl’s crew was dragged onto another ship in shackles. Several went silent as Oria was dragged past, even with all the tales they didn’t believe a female was behind the legend. It scared them that she was now stood in front of them, living proof. The crowds followed them all of the way to the fort.
:/
Oria glanced out of the bars on the windows down into the courtyard where the gallows were being set up ready for tomorrow’s noon hanging. She watched the executioner play around with the rope obviously bored and more than a bit excited about being the one assigned to ending two prominent pirates’ lives. Jack followed her gaze down into the courtyard.
“You afraid?” Jack questioned curiously watching her for a reaction.
“I don’t know.” He smirked and led down in the straw, “Any plans for escape?” She whispered as Jack glanced across at her; she was still looking out at the scaffold. Slowly he crept up onto his elbows and regarded her intensely.
“You are afraid aren’t you?” She smiled slightly.
“Only a little. I’m beginning to think the legend’s right, I think I’m going to hell or was spat out and am almost ready to return. Except I’m not, I don’t want to go anywhere. I want to stay here…” She trailed off not wanting to finish the sentence. Jack sat up and thought for a while before grinning.
“I can get you out.” Oria glanced across at him, “Just you though, then it’s up to you to rescue me.” Oria jumped down from her perch at the window and knelt next to the bars.
“What’s your plan?” Jack grinned and scurried forwards.
“Right well we have to get your cell door open without them realising what they are doing. Now for them not to realise what they are doing they have to be relying on instinct.”
“Or be so distracted that they fail to realise anything else.” Jack nodded encouragingly and watched as Oria grinned.
“I’ve got it.” Jack smirked, he was sure that she was from the deepest dregs of hell to be able to come up with such devious plans so quickly. That didn’t stop him from seeing the drop of angel that he always saw shining through no matter what she did or said. Hell had claimed and tainted that angel of purest form and created a demi-god in his opinion.
:/
Jack sat up as the guard came down the steps spilling the water as he did so muttering about not being a nanny to captured pirates. He glanced across at Oria; she was ready and swayed over to the cell door. Her shirt was hanging open leaving little to the imagination.
“Hey, you… guard, want to help me with a little something. You know as like a last rites kind of thing.” She ran a finger around the curve of her breast with a sultry grin. He stood staring dumbly with a stupid grin on his face; he had heard of things like this happening and was now praising the Commodore whole heartedly for sending him down here. He dropped the tray in front of Jack’s cell and fumbled for his keys to the cells. Finding them he tried to stuff any key into the lock as Oria backed away with a smirk to the back of the cell. The door flung open and the guard charged in with an ecstatic grin, fast as lightning Oria dodged past him and slammed the door shut after him with a mocking grin.
“Sorry love, you’ll have to be faster if you want to catch me.” She smirked as she twisted the keys back to lock the cell and moved to pass them to Jack.
“Duck!” Oria frowned at him before hearing the whistle of something sharp through the air, she rolled abandoning the keys and grabbing Jack’s cutlass from the bench at the side. The Commodore stood with a face of thunder glaring at her.
“I might have known you’d do something like this girl.” Oria glanced back between Jack and the keys and tried to kick them towards him. James swung his sword at her legs and she jumped onto the bench to avoid losing her ankles. Blocking several times she fell off the end rather ungracefully and leapt up as the Commodore leapt forwards to try and grab her. She turned on her heel and ran out of the brig with only the briefest of backwards glances at Jack.
