Chapter 13 – Not Without Him
“Miss Oria!” Gibbs shouted jovially as he spotted the returning quartet as they crested the last dune. Silence fell about the crew. They glanced back to where the pirates were emerging from. “Barbossa?” Grumblings began to whisper through the crew as they regarded the return of the old Captain. Jack frowned at the name and turned around sharply.
“What the hell are you doing? You’re not welcome here so go and chase a crab or find a better hat or something.” Jack protested, waving his hands in an attempt to remove the Captain. Tia Dalma stepped forwards and placed a hand on Jack’s flapping arm.
“Perhaps, we should take him wid us? He might know a way to return to da living world.” Tia Dalma announced with her eyes locked onto Barbossa, commanding him to follow her lead. The older pirate rubbed his fingers together nervously and glanced between Tia Dalma and Jack.
“Aye, I know how to return to the real world. I can get ya free of the Locker. What’d ya say Jack?” Barbossa held a hand out to bargain. Jack regarded it suspiciously, wrinkling his nose at the proffered fingers.
“No. I’ll find me own way. I always do.” Jack announced as he confidently swayed back towards the row boat.
“I’ve spent nigh on a year in this place Jack. Is that not punishment enough?” Barbossa queried angrily at the retreating pirate’s back. Jack turned slowly, his hand gripping the rope on the prow of the row boat. Tia brushed past Oria with a smile and stood next to her.
“We’re going now, without Bar-mutiny-bossa. Come on you scurvy dogs and get in the row boats.” Jack commanded over the silence that had fallen, the crew slowly dawdling over to the boats and clambering in. “Oria.” He gestured to the boat he was holding as Will and Elizabeth clambered in silently.
“Not without Barbossa.” Oria declared, grimacing even as the words fell from her lips. She had never thought that sentence would have fallen from her lips in his favour.
“I’m sorry, think I misheard that. Momentary lapse of concentration; forgiveness and all if you don’t mind. Not had any rum recently so things aren’t working quite as they should.” Jack smiled broadly, his eyes flicking between them. The smile of victory that had dimmed at Barbossa’s appearance was now completely gone and replaced on his arch-nemesis’s lips.
“I said not without Barbossa,” Oria repeated louder locking her eyes with Jack’s. “He’s been down here a year, killed twice and…”
“And that still isn’t enough.” Jack interjected furiously with a scowl at the man his voice clipped with anger. How dare he have gained Oria on his evil un-dead dead side.
“Jack, something’s happening. Something big, we’re going to need every man we’ve got.” Oria stated and glanced about the crew deciding to gain more onto her side in an effort to persuade him. “You’ve seen the number of patrols on the oceans, invading pirate ports like Tortuga. It’s only going to get worse. They’ll hunt each of us down till none remain. We need every pirate there is alive and fighting.”
“Well we don’t need that one. That one mutinies and… steals ships and… steals rum!” Jack scrabbled for a last ‘and’, shouting the rum part as if it finished the argument. Gibbs certainly looked convinced against Barbossa joining the crew but he was perfectly happy to run along with any of Jack’s ideas no matter what they entailed.
“I don’t want your rum Jack.” Barbossa assured his eyes locked onto the other pirate’s.
“He knows da way out Jack.” Tia Dalma reasoned, wrapping her arm around Oria’s companionably. Oria too preoccupied with Jack to really notice the woman hugging her arm.
Oria brushed Tia away gently and stepped up to Jack, brushing her hands over his arms soothingly. “Jack, trust me. I know what I’m doing.” Jack watched her quietly, remembering all the times that he had said those exact words to her. Every single time they had fallen from his lips they had been in support of Barbossa and every single time the promise had never been true.
“You know whenever I said that it always wound up wrong and more often than not dramatically more than disastrous. What makes you think you speaking those words in his favour will produce any different an outcome?” He whispered confidentially, Oria smiled slightly.
“Nothing’s ever wrong as long as you’re here in my opinion. Besides, I’m not the fool that you are.” She murmured with a cheeky grin lighting up her face. “Trust me, Jack.” Oria pleaded with him, praying that he would listen and take heed. She had swiftly decided that proclaiming she was perfectly prepared to use force to get her way was not the way to go persuading Jack at that moment in time. At least there was no point mentioning it, not until there was no other option. Slowly his gaze travelled past her, resting on the other pirate.
“You put even a toe out of line and I’ll…” Jack warned, Barbossa nodded and strode up to him. Ignoring the fact that Oria hadn’t stepped away from Jack and kept herself firmly between the two.
“You’ll send me down to the depths for all eternity. I know.” Barbossa responded to Jack’s unfinished threat. He stepped past Jack and sank into the row boat on the middle plank, Pintel and Ragetti on either side. Both were looking more than a bit uncomfortable at Barbossa’s reappearance and the glaringly obvious fact that they were now in Jack’s crew and traitors to the cause, so to speak.
Jack watched Oria silently for a few seconds before whispering. “What are your plans? I know you’ve got at least one. You wouldn’t have pushed this otherwise.” Oria smiled faintly and patted his arm lightly.
“You’ll know them soon enough.” She started to step around him only to be tugged back.
“You will tell me then?” Jack questioned, his eyes guarded unsure as to what had transpired in the Locker for her to insist so vehemently against Barbossa being left behind.
“Every single little detail. I swear on my life.” She assured and Jack let her go with a fond if mildly suspicious smile. Once the group was in the various row boats the remaining crew pushed the boats back into the ocean before clambering into the last.
