White and Black Pearls - Chapter 12

Chapter Twelve

When his father seemed to have paused his story to search for more rum, Will took his opportunity to ask his questions. “Why sometimes blue, sometimes yellow?” he asked curiously.

Bootstrap lifted his head as he pulled his hand out of the storage trunk with another bottle and a lost expression on his face.

“Her eyes,” Will explained. “Why blue that once and yellow all the other times?”

The man shrugged and opened the fresh bottle. “Once in a blue moon?” he tossed out. “Nobody ever explained it to me. Would make sense though, I think. Golden moon most nights, blue moon now and again… I do know that once a year, during the Blood Moon, she… changes.”

Clever. Will hadn’t thought of that. He nodded. “And what about the battle with all the Pirate Lords in the East? Where was she then? Shouldn’t she have helped?”

Here Bootstrap Bill clucked his tongue and pointed the lip of his bottle at Will. “You’re getting ahead of me.”

Will nodded his acknowledgement that he wanted the story to continue, but interjected, “One last question then. If you’re meaning to tell me that Jack has an ongoing relationship with Celeste, the goddess of the skies who can see anything that happens under her sky… why would he ever possibly make a point of ‘knowing’ Calypso – her sister – when she was Tia Dalma? Is he mad? I was there when she offered to know me as well, and he remarked almost jealously that he thought he was the one who knew her.” Bill stared blandly at his son, and Will nodded in realization at how foolish a question that was. “Ah right. There is no reasoning to why Jack does what he does. I forget now and again and try to put logic to it.” He shook his head and this time accepted the offerings of rum, taking a draught as he tried to stomach this whole tale with a level head.

Bootstrap went on, “After I became a member of the Flying Dutchman’s crew, I learned most of what I’ve told you so far, though parts of it came later on, in trickles here and there whenever Jack Sparrow’s name came up. We never dared to mention his name before the captain, though; it was a sore point for him and we could understand why. Referring to Jack brought up memories of Celeste, and from there, Calypso… and while he had no heart to feel sorrow for her, he still didn’t like thinking about her or having his past brought up by others.

“I was in the middle of polishing all of the brass above deck when I saw her myself for the second time, and this time I knew who she was. She knew who I was, too; as soon as she appeared, her eyes fixed upon mine. That same chill she makes everyone feel, it churned in my belly too, but worse – her glare was particularly hateful towards me and I could understand why. I was one of the men to help break and batter Jack Sparrow, and to steal his ship out from under him. I might not have been one of the men to actually raise a hand against him, but holding back from raising a hand on his behalf was just as bad. She said only one thing to me as she passed by: ‘If you weren’t already a member of this damned crew, I would ensure your fate to be far, far worse than just the blessed peace of death.’

“That, coming from a goddess, was a serious threat, and I avoided her like the plague for the rest of her time on the ship. Still, avoiding her was very different from avoiding stories about her, and those I couldn’t get away from. News about what was going on between her and our captain traveled fast on the ship, and rightfully so; it’s hard to have secrets when the walls themselves are lined with creatures that have ears to hear and mouths to speak.”
