Chapter Fourteen

One year later…

A massive storm raged around the large castle, the rain whipping in the fierce wind, stinging anything it came into contact with. A small group approached the Castle in the dead of night, barely making it to the door before collapsing in exhaustion, soaked to the skin. The warriors on guard brought them into the sitting room where Joss and Fergal were speaking quietly, making plans for the future.

Joss looked up in surprise as the two bedraggled women were brought before them. The taller one, a thin brunette with stormy blue gray eyes gazed at him solemnly before dropping to her knees in respect. Her companion took one look at Joss and nearly fainted before dropping to her knees as well. He moved over to them and motioning for their escort to help him, raised them up to stand before him again. "What business is so urgent that it brings you out this late in such weather?" he asked the sopping wet women. Fergal snapped his fingers and several servants quickly brought warm blankets and hot mulled cider to warm them with.

The blond stared at Joss, sizing him up before beginning to speak. "I am Brigit, niece of Donegal Munro, the laird of Clan Munro. I come before to to ask for sanctuary for me and the heir of Clan Munro, Maren Claire Munro." Brigit indicated the small basket behind her. Joss walked over and peeked inside. A blond baby with emerald green eyes peeked back at him. He felt her Force signature and smiled, reaching in to stroke her downy soft cheek. One fat finger reached out to touch his and then wrapped around his tightly, her eyes never leaving his face. Fergal nodded thoughtfully, he knew this was going to start happening more and more now that the war was finally over and the clans went back to feuding amongst themselves again for land.

"Sanctuary from what?" Joss asked, looking at Fergal in confusion.

Fergal nodded at him to sit down and looked back at Brigit. "Who is trying to force the heir into marriage?"

She looked at him and smiled in relief, he understood! " Clan Innes lands border ours and for generations they have been trying to annex our lands into theirs. Ian Oynie has been after my Uncle's holding for years, the war has made it easy for him to steal our steeds and rams, leaving us near penniless so that we would turn to him in our desperate hour."

"Ian is the son of Lachlan Oynie, cousin of Darryl Innes, Laird of Clan Innes, correct?" Fergal asked, reaching for the data pad one of his warriors handed him.

"Yes and my Uncle has denied his suit many times over the years, this last time, he tried to kidnap me and Maren to force her to y hiy his son Ryder, even though she is a babe only a month old." Brigit said, distaste and loathing crossing her face briefly as she thought of Ian Oynie.

"Your sanctuary is granted." Fergal said, nodding to Joss.

Brigit spoke again quickly. "My bond mate was killed in a skirmish with the Innes last month and I know that the Oynie’s are behind it. I ask for an honor match to avenge his death."

Joss sighed deeply, another duel. Fergal nodded again, looking at Brigit. "You will have your match, although it will be fought by a warrior of my choosing. I will not risk my grandson's life again."

"You will be safe here and I will train Maren myself. She will be able to defend herself against treachery and deceit."

Fergal nodded again and snapped his fingers. Two large warriors stepped back into the room, escorting the women upstairs into warm chambers. "So, the Innes plot treachery, this must be stopped and quickly. I will arrange the honor duel for later this week." Fergal said, stretching his hands out to the fire again, pondering this latest turn of events.

The tall dark haired man sat in the Oynie household, speaking quietly to Ian Oynie, laying out the plans for the future. His father Lachlan shook his head in disgust, he’d never trusted offworlders and now his son was plotting with one of the Jedi bastards who had stolen children from the Clan all those years ago. He spat on the floor and rose, going up the stairs to his quarters.

He never woke the next morning, the chokehold that killed him having taken out his cousin at the same time. Overnight, Ian was the new Baron of Clan Innes, Lord Hys. The dark haired stranger smiled with evil glee and disappeared from the holding before first light, his small ship almost unnoticeable in the predawn hours.
